Geography of China
China stretches some 5,000 kilometers across the East Asian landmass in an erratically changing configuration of broad plains, expansive deserts, and lofty mountain ranges, including vast areas of inhospitable terrain. The eastern half of the country, its seacoast fringed with offshore islands , is a region of fertile lowlands, foothills and mountains, desert steppes , and subtropical areas. The western half of China is a region of sunken basins, rolling plateaus, and towering massifs, including a portion of the highest tableland on earth. The vastness of the country and the barrenness of the western hinterland have important implications for defense strategy. In spite of many good harbors along the approximately 18,000-kilometer coastline, the nation has traditionally oriented itself not toward the sea but inland, developing as an imperial power whose center lay in the middle and lower reaches of the Huang He (Yellow River) on the northern plains.

Geography - China View China from Space 1999 Original Picture from National Geographic Society China is one of the biggest countries in the world. It has an area of about 9.6 million square kilometers which comprises about 6.5 per cent of the world total land area. Its population of more than one billion accounts for 23 per cent of the world's population. China is the world's oldest continuous civilization. World Travel Organization predicts that by year 2020, China will become the number one travel destination in the world. China is situated in the eastern part of Asia on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is the third largest country in the world (after Canada and Russia). The distance from east to west measures over 5,200 kilometers and from north to south, over 5,500 kilometers. When the sun shines brightly over the Wusuli River in the east, the Pamire Plateau in the west is in the very early morning. When blizzards wrap the north along the Heilongjiang River in the winter, spring sowing is underway on Hainan Island in the south. China has a land border of 22,143.34 kilometers long and is bordered by twelve countries: Korea in the east; Russian in the northeast and the northwest; Mongolia in the north; India, Pakistan, Bhutan and Nepal in part of the west and southwest; Burma, Laos and Vietnam in the south.

Chin a's Geography
Land as Varied as Her People

In land size alone, China is the fourth largest country in the world. For centuries, much of this mysterious nation was hidden from outsiders. But when traders and foreign adventurers explored within China's borders, they found mountains, high plateaus, deserts, plains, deltas, and hills that rivaled those of legends. China's second longest river, the Huang He, (Yellow River) rises in Qinghai province and flows some 5000 km to the Yellow Sea, slowing to create crystal clear lakes along its journey. Of course, the Chang Jiang (Yangzi or Yangtze River), China's longest river, is world-reknowned. As China's "main street," this artery courses over 6300 km, through China's most economically developed regions, where the Three Gorges Dam is located. A huge public works project - the largest dam in the world - the Three Gorges Dam project rivals the Grand Canal and Great Wall and is wrapped in environmental, engineering, and political controversy. As a consequence, deserts have a reputation for supporting very little life. Compared to wetter regions this may be true, although upon closer examination, deserts often harbor a wealth of life that usually remains hidden (especially during the daylight) to preserve moisture. Desert landscapes have certain common features. Desert soil is often composed mostly of sand and sand dunes may be present. Exposures of rocky terrain are typical, and reflect minimal soil development and sparseness of vegetation. Bottom lands may be salt-covered flats.
