silkqin
Pronounced "chin" (stringed instrument) or "goo chin" (old stringed instrument), the guqin throughout its long history has been the musical instrument most praised by China's literati. They categorized it as one of their " four arts ", collected it as an art object , praised its beautiful music , and built around it a complex ideology . No other instrument was so often depicted in paintings , or so regularly mentioned in poetry . Because of the literati's fondness for writing things down, it also has the world's oldest detailed written instrumental music tradition , providing sufficient information to allow both historically informed performance (requiring use of silk strings ) of early music, and practical exploration of the relationship between Chinese music theory and music practice. In 2001 I moved from Hong Kong, where I was Artistic Consultant for the Festival of Asian Arts , to New York. Here my focus is

Pronunciations of Tea

History China was the country of origin of Tea dating back 4000 years. As recorded, Shen Lung (Han Dynasty A.D. 206 - 220) experimented with natural herbs from the wild and often used Tea for detoxification. It was mostly used for medicinal purposes until 300 B.C. when it became a common daily drink.

Cha King (Tea Dictionary) Lu Yu (Tang Dynasty A.D. 618 - 907) was the leading tea expert in this period and was commissioned by the tea merchants to write this dictionary. Gradually tea was drunk less for its medicinal effects and more for its taste, prepared in the ways described in the Cha King
Export to the West In Han Dynasty (A.D. 206 - 220), tea was exported to Iran, India and Japan and classified as a luxury drink which was served in court and regarded as the height of elegance and refinement. Tea was commonly used for barter during the Ming period (A.D. 1368 - 1644). In the 17th century, Dutch merchants imported it to Holland from where it spread throughout Europe. At first it was only consumed by the upper classes in special tearooms until, gradually, the habit was adopted by all social classes. Home Page Top Varieties There are more than 100 types of tea because of differing regional climates, soils and treatment processes of growing plants.

Reflections chinese culture and Adopted Children. As I heartily recommend that the entire family learns about chinese culture. Adoptees
http://www.night.net/rosie/culture.html
Reflections:
Chinese Culture and Adopted Children
As our dear daughters grow up, we will face a decision that all parents of internationally adopted children must make-to what extent do we maintain and nurture their original culture? The question is significant because our daughters will be minorities in a white, American culture. They will be among other kids who may make fun of their distinctiveness. And, as other adopted children, they may feel a sense of loss and detachment from their birth country and culture. There's no pat answer for how much culture is the right amount. As parents of Chinese daughters, we will face many years of finding the right balance of Americanization and maintaining their Chinese culture. Much will depend on their interest, as they grow up and our ability to be comfortable with our families' new dual culture status. What follows are thoughts of various parents of Chinese daughters on this issue. They provide food for thought as we consider this difficult, yet wonderful, element of raising our children.
Questioning the value of too much effort
I want my child to be proud of her Chinese heritage, but I question the value of expending a lot of effort to maintain it. If I get her a Chinese caretaker and make a special effort to keep her in touch with her Chinese roots, won't this make her feel different from her playmates who probably won't all be Chinese? America is a

93. Chinese Cultural Tradition And Modern Human Rights
Chinese Cultural Tradition and Modern Human Rights. If the title were chinese culture and Western human rights, then the theme would have been very different.

Chinese Cultural Tradition and Modern Human Rights Albert H Y CHEN
Perspectives, Vol. 1, No. 5
The topic of this article is "Chinese cultural tradition and modern human rights." I deliberately include the words "tradition" and "modern" in this title, because I would like to contrast tradition with modernity. If the title were "Chinese culture and Western human rights," then the theme would have been very different. The contrast would then be between "Chinese" and "Western." The 20th century Chinese philosopher Fung Yulan has written about the discourse and thinking which employed a distinction between "Chinese" and "Western," and that which employed a distinction between "ancient" and "modern." He points out that the correct description of the task or challenge for China in the 20th century is not "Westernization" but "modernization." He writes: "Some people say that Western culture is a motor car culture. ... But motor cars did not exist in the West originally, [and only came into existence at certain point in history.] Having motor cars and not having motor cars is a distinction between the ancient and the modern, and not a distinction between China and the West."

In order to accomplish this, CCA sponsors numerous of activities on and off campus each year. We contribute to the International Spectrum Food Festival in the fall and the SAAB Multicultural Dinner in the spring by cooking and sometimes displaying some exhibits on Chinese culture. But what better way to experience the Golden City without leaving the USA then to visit the Chinatowns in New York City and Philadelphia, which we frequent every year. Occaisionally, we would visit Towson University to view their large Asian art exhibits. A huge part in our agenda, though, involves the Lunar New Year Celebrationwhich was a huge success this year. Every year we attract more and more of the community due to the growing number of adoptions of the orphans in China. As a side project, this year we raised over $400 selling personalized bookmarks for the Grace Children Foundation in their efforts to help Chinese orphanages. Through ALL these programs, the Lewisburg community is able to gain an insight and knowledge of Chinese language, music, food and other aspects of Chinese culture.
