Gift Shop Chinese Dragon Culture Dragons are deeply rooted in the Chinese culture. The Chinese often consider themselves, 'the descendants of the dragon.' Chinese emperors think they are the real dragons and the sons of heaven. Thus the beds they sleep on are called the dragon beds, the throne called the dragon seat, and the emperor's ceremonial dresses called the dragon robes.
In ancient China nobody had any doubts about the existence of dragons. People showed great respect for any dragon depicted in pictures, carvings and writings, and as a result the dragon became the symbol of Chinese nation. All people in china, including the emperor, prostrated themselves before the image of a dragon with reverence and awe. As a result, this unreal animal became the spiritual sustenance for a nation: firstly, as the totem of a tribe and then as the symbol of the nation. Eventually it became the sign on the national flag of the last feudal dynasty, the Qing Dynasty. The chinese people regard themselves as descendants of the dragon.

HOME CONTACT US Winnipeg is a city of many cultures of which the Chinese community has always been an integral and significant part. Today, the Chinese population in the city number 20,000, a far cry from the 200 in 1901. Over the last few decades, as the number of Chinese immigrants increases, so has the need for redeveloping Winnipeg's Chinatown. In 1981, the redevelopment became a reality with the support of the three levels of government through the Winnipeg Core Area Initiative and the Chinese community itself. The Winnipeg Chinatown Corporation was established in 1981, and in 1983 the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre was incorporated. The centre was completed in 1987. ...but fear not, for Disney did a pretty good job at giving the world a feel for the Chinese culture. Sure, there are some changes, but if I wanted complete accuracy I'd watch National Geographic instead. That said, I still went and looked up some stuff anyway, mostly to satisfy my own curiosity. The Setting
Mulan might have been a real person (there certainly have been real-life women warriors in Chinese history), but which region she came from and which dynasty she lived is open to debate. ( Click here for more detail. ) She has risen to truly legendary status. Mulan's origins most likely arose as a merger between the Tuoba (Toba) clan of the Xianbei culture and the Han Chinese. The Tuoba, whom originated from the far northeast, managed to conquer and rule northern China during the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386-534) despite being vastly outnumbered. Although some of the military aspects of Xianbei culture remained, the new rulers began adopted Chinese customs to maintain control over their subjects. Just as society became a blend of two cultures, Mulan is both a dutiful Chinese daughter and an accomplished soldier. Obviously, the exact time and place in China where

    http://ksks.essortment.com/chineseculture_rdpp.htm
    Chinese culture: foot binding
The practice of foot binding began in the Sung Dynasty, sometime between 960-976 BC. It is reported that a prince had a concubine who was required to dance with her feet bound. The prince forced his concubine to dance with bound feet because he had a fetish with tiny feet. This caused traditional family values to dictate that the feet of young girls should be bound to keep them small. The term "Lily feet" was used to describe the tiny feet because they were thought to be very beautiful and a symbol of gentility and high-class. The actual foot binding process began when a girl was between the ages of three and eleven years old. First the inner foot of the child was washed in hot water and then massaged. Then all of the toes, except the first toe, were broken, turned under, pressed to the bottom of the foot, and bound tightly with cloth strips which kept the feet from growing larger than ten centimeters or three point nine inches. Next, the arches were broken as the foot was pulled straight with the leg. The cloth bandages would be tightly wound around the foot from the toes to the ankle to hold the toes in place. bodyOffer(27039) After about two or three years, the child’s feet actually shrank to the point that they could fit into shoes that were only three inches long. These tiny shoes, which were called "lotus shoes", were made of silk and were decorated with beautiful embroidery. The results of the foot binding were highly deformed feet that were extremely painful to walk on. Many times, the toes actually fell off because the bandages were wrapped so tight that blood could no longer reach them.
