Using Computers in Chinese Language Teaching Tianwei Xie California State University, Long Beach Introduction Although some uncertainty and skepticism exits, the use of computer in classroom instruction is gaining immense popularity today. Computers have become a necessity for a student. According to the Time magazine (March 2, 1998), "...in elementary schools, portable computers are the hottest thing since books. American schools are spending more than $5 billion this year on high tech." Some universities go as far as to require students to own a laptop or desktop computer upon beginning their studies (Bazar, 1999). Language teachers are also taking advantage of the modern high tech. Among others, English teachers have begun to use computers for their language instruction early and extensively. Boswood's New Ways of Using Computers in Language Teaching (Boswood, 1997, ed.) is a collection of papers written by English teachers describing various types of activities. These papers are extremely informative and helpful. Why do we need computers in teaching?

Final Project
The goal of the final project is to give you a better idea of some of the topics that were raised in this course. "Doing" is the best way of "learning", and I am sure that you will understand some of the issues much better afterwards.
Project List
Requirements:
  • Modify your Homework 2 program to accept keyboard input of the query (rather than reading in a file with all the queries in them).
  • Look through the Chinese documents provided and generate at least 30 queries from them, together with relevance judgements.
  • Modify your search engine to index and search through these documents. However, since Chinese does not have clearly-defined words, you will have to:
  • Perform Chinese word segmentation.
  • Add in all sequences of n characters, where n is 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Using the provided dictionary , enable your search engine to be able to accept pinyin (sounds only, without the tones) as well as Chinese characters for the queries. (Note: The Chinese characters in the files and dictionary are in GB format)
    Project 2: Relevance Feedback
    Requirements:
  • Modify your Homework 2 program to accept keyboard input of the query (rather than reading in a file with all the queries in them).

Welcome to my title page in COMP 3704. Here I will provide you with a short introduction of myself. I am from Taiwan, and currently live in Denver, Colorado. Now I am a graduate student in the Department of Computer Science at University of Denver and I've been here for one and half year. I like to study and live in Denver. Unlike other big cities in the US, Denver is really a beautiful city with good weather and the people here are gentle and nice. History
I was born in Tainan, the oldest and traditional city in Taiwan, where I grew up and finished twelve years basic education. I graduated form the National Chen-Kung University in Taiwan for four years with a Bachelor of Science in industrial management and science. Then after college, I served my country as a Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class for two years. After that, I was a part-time student and trained for programming in the Institute for Information Industry for half an year. At the mean time, I worked for a mod company as a software engineer.

    WHAT'S ON THE 'NET?
    Actually there's no one 'network', but lots of them - like Fidonet, Compuserve's for-profit network, denominational networks (PresbyNet, EpiscoNet, SBCNet) etc. The Internet is really a network of networks. What's on them? Mailing-lists of people who pray for one another (eg. Agapenet); Newspapers and journals (Time Magazine, Christianity Today); E-mail where you can talk one-to-one to a friend in Zimbabwe or Poland or Antarctica or Iceland (some have met and courted - and eventually married - via e-mail!). You can buy stuff with a credit card (an estimated $US600 billion p.a. in goods and services will be bought/sold by the year 2000); Browse through university libraries; Converse in 'real time' on the IRC (Internet Relay Chat); Exchange ideas in 'fan clubs';

Anyway, exams are coming. I need to stop going on the internet. Don't you find it scary that perhaps one day the internet will sudden stop. Like completely no internet.
All the friends that you know online [including DA] will just disappear like that *snaps fingers* I mean the only way of communicating now is by the internet. It's kinda freaky.
    STEREOTYPE
After watching "Eddy's million dollar cook-off", I'm currently fuming at how people treat stereotypes. Eddy's like this guy who's good at football and likes to cook. People in his school goes away from him because he cook. They mock at him, they tease him... There's this one part in which he was so angry that even his friends were mocking at him, his father forcing him to play baseball, he just decided to quit cooking. He was just in a total dilemma: to go with people's will and become so-called "normal". So what if boys cook? So what if they even join the cheerleading club?

885 Washington St. Boston, MA www.bcnc.net Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center BCNC enhances the quality of life for Boston's Asian-Americans, and especially for residents of Chinatown, the South End, and South Cove. In the late 1960s, Boston was building public schools to accommodate the coming "baby-boom echo". Within each new school, the City planned space for a neighborhood community center. The Quincy School Community Council was founded in 1969 to influence the design of their new school and center, and in 1976 when the School was completed, QSCC was appointed to run the Center. This past year QSCC changed its name to the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center. This is a great and unique program, which broader support would significantly enhance for our whole communitas.
