China: Classical Instrumental Music
literati music which is my priority. Returning to more generally available recordings, many are orchestral of various types, and so of lesser interest to me. There are also some song recordings, but I have not explored those as much. Somewhat unusually, instrumental performance has long had a certain kind of pre-eminence in Chinese art music, as scholars of all disciplines were expected to become proficient in it. Chinese music is basically pentatonic-diatonic, meaning that the basic pentatonic scale can be modulated within a diatonic context. The theory talks of 12-notes to an octave, but most of the compositions are overwhelmingly pentatonic with diatonic/chromatic passing tones. This is even more true of the traditional orchestral music than of the more intricate scholarly music which makes up most of this page. Generally speaking, the Chinese tunes with which many readers will be familiar are much simpler than most of what appears here. There are rather few classical compositions, although each instrument has its own repertory. Some of these repertories are several centuries old, and musicians add to them only slowly, especially in some areas. Therefore many compositions will be repeated from CD to CD, mostly for the same instrument, but sometimes versions exist for more than one instrument. Also, a performance by a musician from a different lineage will often bring out different facets. I will especially emphasize qin music, and look to buy many such recordings. Now there are literally dozens available, of very high quality. The

Local History in Early Medieval China Panel #2, Association for Asian Studies Annual Meeting, San Diego, California, March 2000.
    Panel Abstract
This panel addresses local history writing in China in the second-fourth centuries A.D . Local history can be broadly defined as any sort of written material that is collected about an area with a limited geographical scope, as opposed to having a universal orientation; this includes many sub-genres such as annals, narrative histories, biographies of local men, and descriptions of local scenery. Material of this sort flourished in the late Han and Wei-Jin period. The panelists will explore three different significant aspects of local history: As an expression of separatism : The fractured political world of the Wei-Jin period suggests that local history represents a desire for political autonomy. To test this thesis, generic conventions will be examined for the way that authors conceptualized their local area and its relationship to other areas and the imperial court(s). As historical source materials : Wei-Jin local histories are an important source for contemporary historians of the period, and include some of the most intriguing and best-known accounts of people and events. It is critical to assess the origins, reliability, and adequacy of these materials.

It is arranged thematically following the general plan of the Internet Medieval Sourcebook . "Medieval" has been taken very widely - from the first-century (CE) Roman Empire until the 17th-century. Although "medieval" and "movies" might not seem to be a good fit and a lot of bad films have been made it is perhaps worth noting that they have gone together since the earliest surviving American feature film - André Calmettes and James Keane Richard III of 1912.

Concise Political History of China Compiled from Compton's Living Encyclopedia on America Online (August 1995) 1. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTINUITY A significant aspect of China is its long cultural and national history. The Chinese people have shared a common culture longer than any other group on Earth. The Chinese writing system, for example, dates back almost 4,000 years. The imperial dynastic system of government, which continued for centuries, was established as early as 221 BC. Although specific dynasties were overturned, the dynastic system survived. China was even ruled at times by foreign invaders, such as the Mongols during the Yuan Dynasty, from AD 1279 to 1368, and the Manchus during the Ch'ing Dynasty, from AD 1644 to 1911, but the foreigners were largely absorbed into the culture they governed. It is as if the Roman Empire had lasted from the time of the Caesars to the 20th century, and during that time had evolved a cultural system and written language shared by all the peoples of Europe. The dynastic system was overturned in 1911, and a weak republican form of government existed until 1949. In that year, after a long civil war, the People's Republic of China, with a Communist government, was proclaimed. This government and the ruling Communist party have controlled China ever since. Although the dynastic system has disappeared, the People's Republic occupies essentially the same territory and governs the same people. If anything, the culture and power of China seem stronger in the late 20th century than at almost any other period in history. Under the People's Republic, China's role in world economic and political affairs has grown increasingly more important.

    Did you know?
For centuries, silk-wearing Chinese despised wool, which they considered the fabric of uncivilized people. China kept the technology of silk production secret; the ancient Greeks speculated that silk grew on a special tree in China. Christian monks finally broke China's monopoly on silk production in the 400s, when they smuggled silkworm eggs to Syria on their return from China.
People began to weave fabric during the Neolithic Era, a period that began around 8000 BC, and domesticated cotton first came into widespread use in ancient India around 3000 BC. Throughout most of history trousers have not been associated with men. In China, both men and women, especially those who worked the land, wore trousers. In the Ottoman Empire (based in what is now Turkey), women wore trousers. Only in European cultures did trousers become associated with men. In the 1500s, European aristocrats wore ridiculously long shoes. The longer the shoe, the wealthier and more virile the wearer was considered to be. It actually required Papal intervention to curb this trend.

    http://www.medieval.org/music/world/java.html
    Central Javanese Gamelan
Indonesia is a big country, consisting of many cultures with many musical traditions. The biggest culture, with the most highly refined musical tradition, is that of the Javanese. The island of Bali also supports a distinct classical tradition. The music of other cultures has also been recorded, but I will not be dealing with that, as it has more the character of folk art. Since many readers are apparently less familiar with the Javanese cultural setting (as opposed to India, China or Iran), I will discuss this background before proceeding to the list of recordings. The language we call Javanese is spoken in the central and eastern parts of the island of Java. The western part is Sundanese (from which there are also a few recordings, not to be discussed). Javanese is a very complicated language, consisting of three distinct vocabularies and grammars to be used with those in superior, equal, or inferior social positions with respect to the speaker. The national language of Indonesia is a modern construction, designed for simplicity and easy use by the wide array of different cultures within its boundaries. Prior to the European period, Javanese was the dominant culture of the region, at times holding hegemony in parts of the Asian mainland. For instance, in the early-medieval history of what is now Cambodia, a restoration of the traditional monarchy was heralded by the arrival of a prince from Java to take the kingship. During the Mongol era, a large invasion fleet (much larger than that sent to Japan) was sent to Java, only to be soundly thrashed at sea, without a landing. This will give the reader some idea of the Javanese strength, but it should also be noted that this hegemony was generally not expressed through military means (at least insofar as we understand it), but rather as cultural and trading superiority. Of course, this situation was drastically modified by the arrival of the Arab traders.
