42. About SNPRC Primates
as they are a more arboreal (or aboveground) dwelling species than the baboons or chimpanzees. Marmosets and tamarins are small, South American primates.
http://www.snprc.org/aboutprimates.html
About Our
Primates
SNPRC is home to the world's largest baboon colony , presently comprising about 3,700 animals. Most of the baboons at the facility are olive baboons (Papio hamadryas anubis), but there are also some hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas), red baboons (Papio hamadryas papio) and yellow baboons (Papio hamadryas cynocephalus).
Our main breeding colony is made up of olive baboons, living outdoors in two open-air corrals. Each corral is six acres in size, and contains from 300 to 700 animals.
SNPRC also has a pedigreed baboon colony of about 700 individuals, whose family ancestral lines are well-documented. These baboons live in groups with 15-30 females, their infants, and one male so that the sire is known. Infant baboons are black when they are born, turning the brownish color of the adults when they are about 6 months old. Male and female baboons are very protective of youngsters in their group, and females are especially eager to touch newborn infants. They may follow the mother and groom her to get a chance to touch the infant.
At the other end of the age spectrum is our Pedigreed Geriatric Baboon Colony. This colony contains around 300 animals, all greater than 16 years of age. Of these, over 240 have been genotyped for the 330 microsatellite markers used in our gene mapping studies; eventually, all the animals will be genotyped. These animals are a unique and precious resource for investigating genetic contributions to the physiology of aging, including understanding of osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and menopause.

The best book around on bonobos is probably
Frans de Waal, Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape
(University of California Press 1997) with excellent photographs by Frans Lanting. Bonobos (the "Left Bank Chimps") also known as pygmy chimpanzees , were the last ape species to be identified, some three centuries after the other apes were known to science. That's because they only live in one small and shrinking place, the swampy equatorial forests of the left bank of the Congo River (common chimps are the Right Bank Chimps, extending from Tanzania and Uganda all of the way to West Africa). Behaviorally, these two Pan species are our closest cousins.

hectic
Definition -
Confused or rushed.
Context - They (chimps) interact constantly and the pace can be hectic.
tolerate Definition - To allow or permit. Context - The silverback (gorilla) tolerates the play of the young. 1. Orangutans are orange, but can still hide themselves in the trees. How do they do this? Orangutans’ untidy hair helps them blend in, and they can sit still for hours at a time. Lack of movement helps conceal their location. 2. Why do orangutans move better in trees than on the ground? Orangutans’ feet have long curved toes for holding branches and moving from tree to tree. When they are on the ground, they walk on the edges of their feet and not flat on the ground, which makes walking clumsy. They also don’t have thick skin on the backs of their hands like gorillas and chimps to help them walk on their knuckles. 3. What types of food do orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees eat?

The Essential Need for Animals in Medical Research
Introduction
AIDS
Hepatitis B and C
Because chimpanzees are uniquely susceptible to hepatitis viruses, they serve as an important study model for a major worldwide health problem. Medical research conducted with chimpanzees over the last three decades has resulted in the virtual eradication of hepatitis acquired through blood transfusions and the implementation of programs to control hepatitis B infections by vaccination. Today, scientists continue to study the changes in the hepatitis C virus that lead to life-time infections that can progress to cirrhosis and liver cancer. These advances represent landmark achievements in the control of viral hepatitis.
Malaria
Researchers are beginning to overcome some of the enormous obstacles in developing a vaccine against malaria, a disease that afflicts millions of people annually. New-world monkeys and chimpanzees are the only species suitable for vaccine evaluation because they are susceptible to the same strains of parasites that cause human malaria. Unlike simpler organisms, the malaria parasite has many chromosomes, thousands of genes and a four-stage life cycle as it passes from mosquitoes to humans and back again. A number of promising vaccines that attack the organisms at every vulnerable point in its life cycle are being tested. Some of these have successfully stimulated protective responses in animals and may soon be ready for human trials.

Stop the Bushmeat Trade/End Hunting of Primates - Call for an end to the illegal hunting of chimpanzees, gorillas and other primates in Africa. The hunting of primates continues to decimate the populations of endangered primates. Final Justice for Suzy - Petition to urge Jefferson County prosecutor, Robert G. Wilkins, to seek full felony charges against Jason Coats in the April shooting death of a chimpanzee in Festus, Missouri. We further urge Mr. Wilkins to not accept a lesser plea but to press fully to ensure that Mr. Coats is incarcerated for his crime.
The Great Ape Project
Demands the extension of the community of equals to include all great apes:human beings, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans. Petition to Retire Primates - Requests that the United States enact federal legislation funding a system of sanctuaries for primates no longer being used for experimentation.

by Jill Locantore and Brendan Horton When Koko the gorilla signals in American sign language, “Koko again bad,” after biting a trainer, is she using language to communicate? When the chimpanzee Yeroen acts as though a wound is much more painful than it really is, is he being intentionally deceptive? When Indah the orangutan correctly indicates which pile of grapes is lesser in number, is she doing math? Scientists are hotly debating these questions, but one thing is clear: differences between humans and other primates aren’t as black and white as once was thought. Intelligence appears more a matter of degree, developing gradually throughout the primate lineage rather than sprouting magically when humans first arrived on the scene. Many of the features of our brain that support higher cognitive functions, such as language and mathematics—or at least their precursors—may well be present in ape and monkey brains, and in the brains of long-extinct relatives like the Australopithecines.

However, to offer the most appropriate housing and management conditions to the chimpanzees at Chimp Haven and elsewhere, it is necessary to increase and share our knowledge about this endangered species. This can only be accomplished by encouraging educational and behavioral studies.
Students of anthropology, zoology and psychology from local or national universities will be able to study the behavior and socialization of the chimpanzees. Information obtained from such studies will be shared with others through newsletters and peer-reviewed journal articles, so that improvements may be implemented for chimpanzees at other facilities as well. There is a lack of accurate information about chimpanzees available to the general public. Chimp Haven can play an important role by providing educational material and programs to enhance public knowledge about chimpanzees. Information on the intelligence and behavior of chimpanzees will be shared through seminars, classes or workshops for schools and civic groups.
