    Chile's Geography
Central Chile is the cultural nucleus of the country. All of Chile's largest cities are located here, as are most of its universities and industries, its vineyards, finest agricultural lands, colonial and early republican architecture. In fact, central Chile is something of a microcosm of the country, balanced between deserts to the north and forests to the south, with the capital poised between the highest peaks in the Americas and a host of premier beach resorts. Santiago, the capital, is a focal point of Latin American commerce and the point of entry for nearly all international arrivals. Clean and modern, Santiago sits in a basin between the Coast Range to the west and the Andes to the east. World-class ski areas in the central Andes lie only forty-five minutes away, up steep switchbacks which climb over 7,500 feet in twenty-six miles. Numerous vineyards surround the capital; hotsprings, seventeenth-century colonial haciendas, and national parks in both the Andes and the Coast Range, all make easy day trips. At night, visitors may choose from a variety of restaurants serving all types of regional and ethnic cuisines, and excellent hotels assure a good night's sleep for business or pleasure.

The geographic coordinates of Chile are 30 00 S, 71 00 W. Check it out on a map, see if you can locate Chile. Chile covers a total area of 756,950 sq. km. Of this area, 748, 800 sq. km is land, while the remaining 8,150 sq. km is water. Chile has two islands, Easter Island and Isla Sala y Gomez. If you compare Chile's area to a state in the United States it would be almost twice the size of Montana! What makes Chile so unique is its coastline. Chile is a long, narrow country that has 6,435 km of beautiful coastline. Chile has low mountains along the coast, but shares the rugged Andes Mountains in the east. Between this terrain is a fertile central valley that allows for some of Chile's good farming crops. Some of Chile's natural resources include; copper, timber, iron ore, nitrates, precious metals, molybdenum, and hydropower. Of the land that can be used in Chile only 5% of it is arable land. While a majority of the land 22% is composed of forests and woodland.

The university system consists of 25 traditional universities and 40 private universities. Traditional universities include public and private universities with partial public funding. Students take a national test and apply, in a centralized process, for admission to one of the traditional universities. Private universities were created after 1980, and do not receive direct public funding. Each private institution defines its admission process. Undergraduate programs are 8 to 12 semesters in length, leading to a degree of licenciado or a professional title. Graduate programs include magister (master) and doctorado (Ph.D.) and require one to three years of further study and the submission of a thesis. Most universities work on a semester basis, and the grading system is from 1-7, with 4 (suficiente) being the lowest passing grade. Chile follows the Southern Hemisphere calendar . When applying for an academic year exchange, students will find it beneficial to begin their studies during the U.S. second term. The Chilean academic year runs from March to December.

    DXing the Land of
    Crazy Geography
    by Don Moore
A slightly edited version of this article was originally published in the April, 1994 issue of Monitoring Times magazine. In 1985 while traveling through South America, my wife and I crossed into Chile at the northernmost city of Arica, and as usual, one of our first stops was the local national tourism office. On one wall of the office was a long narrow poster with a cartoon map of Chile showing the different regions ranging from the desert of the north, the fertile valleys in the north-center, Alpine lakes and mountains of the south-center, and thick forests and glaciers of the south. The caption at the bottom read, Chile - Geografia Loca , or "Chile - Crazy Geography." What better way to describe a country that is 2600 miles long, but averages only 100 miles wide?
    PROGRESSIVE AND PROSPEROUS
Since independence, Chile has been one of the most stable and progressive countries in Latin American. Democratically elected governments have been the norm in Chile and an influx of European immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s helped produce a strong middle class and futher the country's economic development. Today Chile is the only Latin American country classified as developed, according to United Nations statistics. Befitting Chile's advanced position in Latin America, in the early 1920s Chile became one of the first Latin American countries with radio broadcasting. The Chilean congress even briefly considered setting up a BBC-like public broadcasting monopoly before deciding to follow the U.S. model of private broadcasting. Chile's strong economy and democratic traditions led to the establishment of a solid radio broadcasting industry. By the 1960s, several Chilean universities offered majors in broadcasting and journalism and Chile's mass-media education was considered a model for Latin America.
