CHILE
S
urrounded on three sides by virtually impassable barriers, Chile's rich central valley remained largely unknown to the outside world until the middle of the fifteenth century, when the Incas began their great conquests of much of the continent. Under Tupac Yupanqui, an Inca army succeeded in crossing the six hundred mile string of salt basins that are the Atacama Desert, moving from oasis to oasis in a region so dry that some parts of it show no evidence of ever having been rained upon. After coming at last into the central valley, the Incas encountered the Mapuche, one of the three Araucanian peoples who occupied the region.
The invading army seemed at first to be enjoying the same success that the Incas were experiencing all over South America, and they advanced about half way down the valley's five hundred mile length. However, the Incas soon found that they had met their match in the Mapuche, who decisively defeated the Incan attempt to cross over the Rio Maule into the Lake District. The Incas established a stable presence in the territory they had gained, but they did not see fit to pursue the redoubtable Mapuche any further.
Less than a century later, a Spanish army attempted to do just that. In 1541, Pedro de Valdavia crossed into the central valley, having followed the Inca road south from Peru. He founded Santiago in February, and soon afterward crossed into Mapuche domains and established strongholds there. In 1553, in a gesture no doubt familiar to the Spaniard Valdavia, they bound him to a tree and beheaded him.

Welcome to the third installment at what originally was just ancientmexico, but has now become Peru and Chile. Obviously this page needs a lot of work to be on par with the other two sites, but I have managed to add the first page to this section which you can now view by clicking the link below. THE MAPUCHE : Images from the Past - This page is still being completed at the time of this writing. It is a flash heavy page so it may take long to download if you have low bandwidth. The Mapuche are the largest existing indian tribe in Chile, and the ancestral population of most modern day Chileans. They were the only Indians in the Americas to effectively fight of the Spanish and retained their independance from Chile until the late 19th century. This flash essay depicts some of the startling photos taken of these people when they were finally being assimilated into the Chilean population. CHILE : A Photo Essay on Our Travels - After an absence of twenty years, I returned to the country of my birth to find a nation healing from the wounds of it's past, and a landscape that was folkloric and beautiful. Pages are accompanied by historical facts. The design was done by my friend who accompanied me, Marta Zaleska.

    That explains why..............

We lived with an Exchange Student from Chile this year. So many pages of this book had me thinking "So, that's why....." It answered many questions I didn't even know to ask.
A must for foreigners in Chile
As an anthropologist and long-time resident of Chile, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who plans to spend time here. In fact, I've made it required reading in a 'culture course' I teach for North American university students here in Chile. This book is not another travel guide, but rather an insightful and very accessible look into the intracacies of Chilean culture. A quick look through the table of contents shows its range of topics, and the Cultural Quiz at the end is a must!
An accurate and entertaining view of the Chilean "lifestyle"

    History
"In the beginning of time, God created the wonders of the world. When he finished, however, he saw that he had many leftover pieces. He had parts of rivers and valleys, of oceans and lakes, of glaciers and deserts, of mountains and forests, and of meadows and hills. Rather than to let such beauty go to waste, God put them all together and cast them to the most remote corner of the earth. This is how Chile was born." - Chilean Legend. Surrounded on three sides by virtually impassable barriers, Chile's rich central valley remained a well-kept secret until the middle of the fifteenth century, when the Incas drove southward in their quest to conquer the whole of the continent. An Inca army succeeded in crossing the Atacama Desert in the northern reaches of Chile, but soon encountered resistance upon reaching the central valley. Defeated by the fierce-fighting Aruacanian Indians, the Incas established a presence in the land already taken but pressed no further into Aruacanian territory.

Culture Location Considered in many ways Latin America's most progressive country, Chile offers the student modern amenities while still holding onto an important colonial and indigenous past. The economic growth of the past decades has led to first world health and safety conditions and foreigners have little trouble adjusting while learning Spanish in Chile. The capital of Chile Santiago is conveniently located one hour west of the Andes Mountains and one hour east of the Pacific Ocean. The past decade's economic growth and investment have created a clean, modern city, while colonial charm and historic museums and monuments have remained preserved. Santiago 's modern subway system is both economic and efficient and, together with an extensive bus network and taxi supply, can quickly transport students to all parts of the city. At the foot of the Andes and only 100 km from the ocean, Santiago provides all of the big-city attractions of nightlife, culture, and fine restaurants while also serving as a convenient point for starting day or weekend trips to Chile's world-famous nature.

    Chile History and Culture
History The country's history is as extensive as its coastline is long. The northern region of Chile formed part of the Incan empire, and the more southerly regions were originally occupied by other indigenous tribes. Spanish explorers, conquerors and settlers arrived in the mid 1530s and began a struggle with the native residents that was to go on for more than 300 years. When the last Arauca Indians on Chiloe Island surrendered, the Spanish hold on the land was complete. By that time, the European settlers had already made substantial moves toward independence from Spain (led by a hero with the unlikely name of Bernardo O'Higgins).

Western travelers are less noticeable than in neighboring Peru and Bolivia because of Chile's European heritage. The European education of many Chilean intellectuals influenced the country's art, music and architecture. As a result art galleries, museums and a thriving theater scene are a large part of Chilean culture. Nobel Prize-winning poets Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda were products of Chile and, until the military coup of 1973, its cinema was among the most experimental in Latin America. The country's oppressed used folk music as an important vent, and was regularly performed overseas by exiles during Pinochet's reign. Religion is big in Chile and over 90% of the inhabitants are Roman Catholic, but evangelical Protestantism is becoming popular. Impressive and omnipresent best represents the country's Catholic architecture, from high-flying colonial churches to roadside shrines, some of which are amazing manifestations of folk art. Chile's official language is spanish, though many other native languages are still spoken. In the south there are perhaps half a million speakers of Mapuche and in the north, there are more than 20,000 speakers of Aymara.
