41. Ancient Chile, The Art, Culture, And History Of Ancient Chile
The art and culture of chile from its prehistory to the Araucanian resistance.
http://ancientmexico.com/chile/chile.html
Welcome to the third installment at what originally was just ancientmexico, but has now become Peru and Chile. Obviously this page needs a lot of work to be on par with the other two sites, but I have managed to add the first page to this section which you can now view by clicking the link below. THE MAPUCHE : Images from the Past - This page is still being completed at the time of this writing. It is a flash heavy page so it may take long to download if you have low bandwidth. The Mapuche are the largest existing indian tribe in Chile, and the ancestral population of most modern day Chileans. They were the only Indians in the Americas to effectively fight of the Spanish and retained their independance from Chile until the late 19th century. This flash essay depicts some of the startling photos taken of these people when they were finally being assimilated into the Chilean population. CHILE : A Photo Essay on Our Travels - After an absence of twenty years, I returned to the country of my birth to find a nation healing from the wounds of it's past, and a landscape that was folkloric and beautiful. Pages are accompanied by historical facts. The design was done by my friend who accompanied me, Marta Zaleska.

    50. Welcome To Chile
Introduces the geography, history and culture of the world's longest country, which stretches more than 2,700 miles along the southwestern coast of South America.
    http://www.interknowledge.com/chile/
    CHILE
    Introduction
    C
hile is a country of startling contrasts and extreme beauty, with attractions ranging from the towering volcanic peaks of the Andes to the ancient forests of the Lake District. There are a multitude of very good parks here, and plenty of opportunities for fine adventure travel. Chile is justly famous as the location of Torres del Paine, considered by many to be the finest nature travel destinations in all of South America.
    Location, Geography Climate
For anyone who has ever been fascinated by geography, the long, impossibly thin line of Chile has always produced a tiny moment of astonishment. Chile stretches over 4,300 km (2,700 mi) along the southwestern coast of South America, a distance roughly the same as that from San Francisco to New York, or Edinburgh to Baghdad. At the same time, its width never exceeds 240 km (150 mi), making the country more than eighteen times longer than its widest point.
In the center of the country, however, is a long and expansive river valley, a five hundred mile corridor occupied in the north by vineyards and great farms and in the south by primeval forests and enchanting lakes. Santiago, the capital, anchors the northern and more prosperous section of the central valley. The lush Lake District to the south, however, is the homeland of Chile's indigenous peoples, the Araucanians.

Temuco - Culture T emuco (220.000 inhabitants), one of Chile's fastest-growing cities, is the capital of the Araucania Region and gateway to the country's Lake District. This is one of Chile's foremost tourist areas, with some of the most frequented national parks, renowned lake resorts, volcanoes, ski resorts and Mapuche settlements where traditions are still kept alive. T emuco is the perfect starting point for an exploration of Chile's stunningly beautiful Lake District, a region of rolling hillsides, lush green forests, and snow-capped volcanic peaks. Temuco is also the cultural centre of the Mapuche Indians, the original inhabitants of the area. Almost alone among South American peoples, the Mapuche successfully resisted European incursions, maintaining independent control of their territory for over 300 years in the face of considerable force. Today, the Lake District has almost 3,000 Mapuche reservations, and Temuco is the principal market town. Traditional Mapuche crafts are sold at Temuco's Mercado Municipal and Feria Libre . La Serena - Culture Other places of special interest include The Church of San Francisco with its Religious Art Museum, the Archeological Museum with its pre-Hispanic cultural artifacts and also the Ignacio Domeyko mineralogical Museum. La Recova Municipal market with its handicraft fair offers an important variety of typical products. Among these the "Combarbalita" stone figures , lapizlazuli jewelry, alpaca wool knitting, ceramics and confections, stand out. It is extremely pleasant to stroll through the Pedro de Valdivia Park, and the Japanese Park with its Garden of the Heart ("Jardνn del Corazσn"), and Finally walk down Francisco de Aguirre Avenue as far as the Light House monument (Faro Monumental). The light house marks the beginning of the modern Avenida del Mar, an entertaining beach road which borders the coast toward the south and constitutes the tourist activity center of the city. The port of Coquimbo lies just South of La Serena along the Pan American highway. From there it is a short distance to La Herradura, Las Tacas, Puerto Velero and Tongoy resorts.
