NHTSA Child Seat Safety Information
Selecting the “best” child safety seat for your child
Statistics show that four out of five child safety seats are used incorrectly. Therefore, the “best” child safety seat for your child is the one that fits your child, fits your vehicle, and will be used correctly on every trip. Selecting the appropriate safety seat for your child along with using and installing it properly can save your child's life. The information below is designed to:
  • Educate you about the various types of child safety restraints available. The charts below list all the new child safety seats available as of January, 2001.
  • Provide a listing and descriptions of various features available on the child restraints.
  • Provide recommendations for the correct use of each type of safety seat which will help you select the most appropriate child safety seat for your child.
  • Allow you to click on the “tips for correct use and installation” sections for each type of child restraint.
Recommendations for child restraint use:
  • Use a rear-facing child seat for children from birth to at least 20 pounds and one year of age.

I just purchased a Graco Century car seat for babies 20-40lbs. I drive an eclipse, therefore I have bucket seats that don't have a seatbelt in the crease and the tightness of the seatbelt cannot be adjusted. It doesn't say anywhere in the manual what I have to do to be sure the seat is safe and secure. I was wondering if anybody might know what I need to do. I am new at this and am not sure of my resources available to me.
Thanks for your help!!!

American Academy of Pediatrics 2004 Family Shopping Guide to Car Seats Using a car safety seat correctly can help Traffic safety Administration (NHTSA) Web site at http//www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/ problems/recalls/childseat.cfm
http://www.aap.org/family/carseatguide.htm
Car Safety Seats: A Guide for Families American Academy of Pediatrics [ Brochures can be ordered online on the AAP BookStore Every state requires that infants and children ride buckled up. However, state laws do not always require the safest way to transport a child. More children are still killed as passengers in car crashes than from any other type of injury. Using a car safety seat correctly can help prevent injuries to young children, but it is not as easy as you think. Just a little mistake in how the car safety seat is used could cause serious injury to your child. Which is the "best" car safety seat?
  • No one car safety seat is "safest" or "best." The "best" car safety seat is one that fits your child's size and weight, can be installed correctly in your car, and that you will use every time you drive.
  • Price does not always make a difference. Higher prices can mean added features that may or may not make the car safety seat easier to use.
  • When you find a car safety seat you like, try it out! Put your child in the car safety seat and adjust the harnesses and buckles. Make sure it fits in your car.
  • Keep in mind that displays or illustrations of car safety seats in stores do not always show them being used correctly.
