2004 Childrens Writers and Illustrators Market (Childrens Writers and Illustrators Market, 2004) > Customer Review #1: Not good for the Young Adult Horror writer

If you write young adult horror short fiction, like I do, do NOT bother buying this bookstick with the 2004 Novel and Short Story version. There is not even a category for horror; there is only fantasy, sci fi and mystery/suspense. Most of the story maximum word cut-offs are under 1,000 too. Disappointing!

2003 Childrens Writers and Illustrators Market > Customer Review #1: A panoramic view of an ever-changing market

The guy who slammed the 2002 edition of this book for its "unbalanced coverage" of new authors probably had a heart attack when he saw this years crop of first-time authors. Four women and one man made the cut. Alex Sanchezs "Rainbow Boys" is about 3 gay teenagers which shouldnt surprise anyone because Sanchez himself is gay. Anyway, focusing on one chapter defeats the whole purpose of the book. The two items before "First Books" featured interviews with award-winning authors Sid Fleischman and Richard Peck, who from all indications appear to be totally straight. Taken as a whole, the two interviews and the "First Books" chapter give the clearest picture of market trends. Fleischman and Peck take their place among such luminaries as Ted Geisel ("Dr. Suess"), Maurice Sendak and E. B. White while the market for new authors makes a healthy shift toward themes more relevent to the current millennium. Not everyone can get on the publishing bus at the same time, so certain authors will just have to wait until market trends desire their services again. The age of Male Dominance of the childrens book trade is over.

Writing children's picture books
Have you ever wanted to write a children's picture book? Learn how to write original, engaging picture books.
So youd like to write a childrens picture book, but you dont know where to start? Picture books are wonderful, visually engaging exercises for children. Read the following article to learn how to write original picture books. bodyOffer(30611) In general, picture books are 30-34 pages long. Publishers often state that they must be 32 pages, so this is a good estimation. Not all of this space needs text. The entire picture book can be pictures, or pictures can be mixed with text throughout. An ideal book is one with pictures on both pages of an open book, and writing on at least one page. When writing a picture book, it is wise to avoid poetry, and instead attempt to write lyrical language. This is because publishers rarely accept poetry from other than a select group of writers. When submitting a picture book, it is not advised to also submit illustrations. Publishers often provide an illustrator after revising a book. Picture books exist in three categories: 2-6 years, 6-10 years, and 10 and up. When writing, its wise to set your ideas down carefully first on paper in an outline to determine which audience you are writing for. Several gradations exist of this genre. A classic picture book contains only picture. Contemporary picture books contain text and writing that complement each other. There are occasional variations from this format, in special cases.

    Children's Writing Workshop
Since 1997 we have run writing programs at Aztec Ruins for area third through fifth graders. Students spend a day exploring the Monument, and taking field notes on their observations. They then work with an artist in residence to render their vision of the place in art and/or in writing. Art and writing from this project has been displayed for public viewing at the Farmington Civic Center and the New Mexico State Fair. School groups from Farmington, Bloomfield, Kirtland, Aztec, and Zuni have taken part in this exciting place-based education program. Read a sample story and view artwork by past participants. Review program activities.
    • Language Arts: vocabulary/ linguistic skills; critical thinking skills; reading completed work to an audience; rules of spoken/written language; using language/story across cultures. Art: making art to understand elements of art; exploring materials, techniques, processes in solving art problems; explore similarities and differences between visual arts and other arts disciplines; explore the influence of personal experience, imagination and the dynamics of culture in creating art.
At this time we offer the program each year to four groups of 3rd through 5th grade students from area elementary schools. In the writing workshop, students work with children's writer in residence Uma Krishnaswami. Uma offers a brief orientation to fiction writing, and on using the senses to construct setting in stories. They also tour the site with a traditional presenter who shares a personal perspective on the meaning of the place to present-day Pueblo peoples of the Southwest.
