The Write Sites
Rather than list my entire bookmark file here, I selected those sites that have good connections to information. Once you are there you can jump to more specific sites. I start from a general catalog site, like YAHOO, and explore the branches until I reach a site with a good set of links to one subject. Then I bookmark the link site so I can go back to it quickly. I like the documents available at http://english-www.hss.cmu.edu/18th.html, but unless you like the Eighteenth century, the pointer is useless. Leave your own trail of cyberbreadcrumbs.
Libraries
My advice to writers who ask about where to find information is always: start with your public library. There is a lot of information on the Internet, but not much depth to it yet. It's like those whirlwind tours of Europe, except instead of 7 countries in 7 days you can do 700 sites in an hour or so and still not learn much. You can find out more with a couple of hours research in a library than you can from the same time spent on the Internet. Once you have researched the background and have a basic grasp of the subject, you will be able to handle the disorganized information on the Internet.

How to Write and Illustrate Childrens Books and Get Them Published > Customer Review #1: Very useful information

I found this book to be very useful as a source for writing better childrens books. It includes specific style and writing techniques with examples to teach us to make a more powerful manuscript. I wish there were more books like this with even more ideas!
How to Write and Illustrate Childrens Books and Get Them Published > Customer Review #2: Good Start for Illustrators How to Write and Illustrate Childrens Books and Get Them Published > Customer Review #3: Helpful to illustrators As a published childrens book author and illustrator, I found this book to be one of the more helpful guides for those interested in childrens illustration. Most books in the "How to Write Childrens Books" genre focus on the writers perspective and neglect the illustrator. This book, with contributions by an Art Director, also addresses portfolio presentation, picture book layout, style, dummies, tearsheets and roughs. True, the book is somewhat dated and there are more comprehensive books on childrens book publishing. However, I would highly recommend this book to fellow illustrators.

50. Learning To Write: 5-14
Balancing skills and content the crucial challenge for teachers is to foster and develop childrens ideas for writing while taking forward technical skills.
http://www.scre.ac.uk/rie/nl65/nl65duffield.html
Learning to Write: 5-14 Research in Education No. 65 Winter 1999/2000
Jill Duffield and Colin Peacock, Stirling University, report on a study of the nature and quality of the teaching of writing within 5-14 English Language
THE TEACHING OF WRITING in Scottish primary and secondary schools is currently a focus of concern. According to HMI, almost half the pupils seen in inspections are not reaching standards of writing appropriate to their stage in the education system (Cairney and Munro, 1999). This concern is not new: the Assessment of Achievement Programme for English Language repeatedly reported pupils' difficulties with structure and logical organisation of ideas in writing; mundane imaginative writing and inadequate mechanical skills were noted; P7 pupils seemed to be less successful in writing than in the other language modes (reading, speaking and listening) (SOED, 1993; SOEID, 1996). Furthermore, research by ourselves and others has emphasised that many pupils are unable to evaluate their own writing except in terms of surface features such as length, neatness, spelling and punctuation. Studying writing performance
Our research was carried out in one Scottish local authority using observation of lessons and the study of pupils' writing from those lessons. The eight primary and two secondary schools were selected by the local authority to incorporate as wide a range as possible of size, location, range of clusters, denomination, and existing performance. The primary heads and secondary principal teachers of English from the schools took part in the research, each acting as an observer in a school other than their own. The university researcher carried out observations and interviewed teachers in all the schools. In each school two classes took part: one at P6 or 7 and one younger class in the primaries, and one each at S1 and S2 in the secondaries. This provided coverage of all 5-14 stages with an extra focus on transition to secondary.

Tips on How to Write Children’s Stories
By Aaron Shepard
For more resources, visit Aaron Shepard’s Kidwriting Page at
www.aaronshep.com/kidwriter
Excerpted from the book The Business of Writing for Children, Here are the elements that editors, reviewers, and to some extent readers will look for in your story. Take them as general guidelines. Good writers often break rules—but they know when they’re doing it!
Theme
A theme is an insight or viewpoint or concept that a story conveys. If an editor says your story is “slight,” this may mean you have no significant theme. Don’t blurt out your theme. Let it emerge from the story. If you must come out and say it, do it in dialog, not narration. Avoid preaching. Children’s stories should be explorations of life—not Sunday school lessons. Keep your theme positive. If writing about a social problem, offer constructive ways for your readers to deal with it.
Plot
Plot is normally built around a conflict involving the main character—for instance, with another character, or with circumstances, or within him- or herself. A story may succeed without conflict—especially if for preschoolers—but not without another device to hold attention.

Getting Started:
The Basics of Children's Writing and Illustrating
by Harold Underdown This is introductory information for people wanting to get published as a children's book writer or illustrator . I have worked for about fifteen years in hardcover children's books: for Macmillan, Orchard, and Charlesbridge, whose books are sold to libraries, schools, and bookstores; as a freelancer for a number of others; and most recently for ipicturebooks.com, a now-defunct publisher of ebooks for children. I also have some experience in educational publishing, but I haven't worked in mass market publishingthe publishing of inexpensive books by companies such as Landoll'sor magazine publishing, so I can't provide guidance in those areas.
Does this describe your situation?
You've written a story your family enjoys or painted some illustrations that your friends tell you are wonderful. Maybe you read your story out loud to a group of children, and they liked it. Stop!
