Encouraging Young Writers Source: RIF Parent Guide Brochure Long before they go to school, before they even know the alphabet, children begin to write. In fact, for most children, literacy begins at home . . . with a crayon. The scribbles of very young children have meaning to them, and scribbling actually helps them to develop the language skills that lead to reading. Young children who are encouraged to draw and scribble stories will learn to write more easily, effectively, and confidently once they head off to school. How can you encourage your children to write? From infancy on

Return to Publishing FAQs Learning About Children’s Trade Book Publishing Four to five thousand children's books—from picture books to young adult novels—are published in the U.S. each year. There are small publishing houses as well as large firms and conglomerates. There are many special interest publishers as well as houses with general publishing programs. A majority of larger, general trade book publishers are based in New York City, although there are many small and large houses in other parts of the country. Book publishing programs vary. While hardcover publishers originate books of every description, many lists reflect particular interests. For example, one list may reflect a publisher's emphasis on pre-school books; another may include a preponderance of books aimed at the middle grades and young adults; another, books that have originated abroad; and another may concentrate on nonfiction books on contemporary subjects. Paperback publishers originate titles on their own and purchase publication rights from hardcover publishers. Many original paperbacks appear in a series format and are originated by a book producer, sometimes called a packager, rather than by the publisher. Some hardcover publishers also publish paperback editions of titles from their own list, either at the same time the original hardcover publication appears, or after it.

Cons Dates itself quickly. The Bottom Line This is the guide most used by children's book and magazine writers. Full Review One of the most frequent questions asked on the children's writers boards online is, "I wrote this story. Where do I send it to get it published?" The answer isn't quite so simple as the question implies. There's no one central clearing house where you send stuff and it automatically gets published. Okay, there's something like that out there, something called a vanity publisher, where you send your manuscript and a whole lot of dough and they send you a box of your books. But that's not publishing. That's printing. Real publishers pay YOU for your work. Just as real agents get paid when they sell your work. Never pay an agent a "reading fee."

The singular purpose of the childrens-voice list is the publishing of
children's writing from Junior Kindergarten to Grade Eight. Any
classroom teacher may publish a child's writing on the listserver at
their discretion to be shared with other subscribers. When a writer
places their own personal experience within the elements of their
story, we hear the voice of the author. Helping a child to bring their personal experience to their writing is a prime objective of the writing process. It is always easy to publish a child's writing when the voice is strong. It is the caring and sensitive teacher who publishes a child's work, when for the
