Return to Publishing FAQs Learning About Children’s Trade Book Publishing Four to five thousand children's books—from picture books to young adult novels—are published in the U.S. each year. There are small publishing houses as well as large firms and conglomerates. There are many special interest publishers as well as houses with general publishing programs. A majority of larger, general trade book publishers are based in New York City, although there are many small and large houses in other parts of the country. Book publishing programs vary. While hardcover publishers originate books of every description, many lists reflect particular interests. For example, one list may reflect a publisher's emphasis on pre-school books; another may include a preponderance of books aimed at the middle grades and young adults; another, books that have originated abroad; and another may concentrate on nonfiction books on contemporary subjects. Paperback publishers originate titles on their own and purchase publication rights from hardcover publishers. Many original paperbacks appear in a series format and are originated by a book producer, sometimes called a packager, rather than by the publisher. Some hardcover publishers also publish paperback editions of titles from their own list, either at the same time the original hardcover publication appears, or after it.

SINGING TOWARDS
THE FUTURE: THE STORY OF PORTIA WHITE
by Lian Goodall
Portia White, born in 1911, had a dream: to sing on stage. Even as a little girl in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she could imagine an audience before her, clapping as she took her bow. But how could a poor girl growing up in a family with ten siblings make that dream come true? At that time, there were few opera roles available for black singers. To become a recital singer, she would have to go to Europe to study. How could she ever afford that? But Portia was not only a talented contralto, she was determined. With the support of her family and community, she eventually climbed onto stages across Canada, the United States, and Central and South America in the late 1930s and early 1940s. She crossed the colour barrier to enter concert halls and sing before white and black audiences on both continents. Later, she became a teacher and mentor of other well-known and successful singers.
When Portia White died in 1968, she left a legacy of living to her belief that "first you dream and then you lace up your boots."

Egermeier's Bible Story Book Made by Warner Press Average review score: The Best Bible Story Book We Own! We own many Bible story books, but this one is my favorite. We read from this book every day, and the kids love it. It includes stories that are left out of many children's Bible story books. It is wonderful to read in order, and it really keeps the attention of the children. When it's time to shut the book, my kids say, "What's the story for tomorrow called, Mommy?", because they so look forward to reading this book. Excellent Bible for Children This is an excellent bible story book. I read it to my children everyday. I love Egermeier approach to topics that would be hard to explain to little ones.

Rita Milios, MSW ( rita@milios.net ) is a freelance writer and editor of over two dozen books and numerous magazine articles for children in grades K-8, for publishers including MacMillan, Prentice Hall, Harcourt Educational, Rosen and others. A former writing instructor for Long Ridge Writer's Group (a division of The Institute of Children's Literature), Rita has critiqued both fiction and nonfiction manuscripts, and yes, a few were "cute bunny" stories.
Five Reasons to Write Nonfiction for Children
by Rita Milios
Most children's writers, it seems, are writing fiction. There's something about cute bunny stories, rhyming text and talking animals that many children's writers find irresistible. Alas, few children's editors agree. Finding a home for that cute bunny story may be almost as difficult as, well, finding a real talking animal. On the other hand, publishers of children's nonfiction are often desperate for good manuscripts from talented writers. I'd never suggest that a children's fiction writer turn to nonfiction simply because there's more market potential. But I would suggest that if you can adjust your creative flow to include researching and writing interesting nonfiction pieces that children will enjoy, you might just see your name in print more often and your bank account filled with a few more bucks. Here are some practical reasons why you might want to consider nonfiction:
