Young readers today can choose from thousands of works written and illustrated specially for them. These works include biographies, novels, poems, collections of folk literature, and books that provide information on the arts, sciences, and social sciences.
In addition, some books written for adults have become extremely popular among young readers. Examples of such books include Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, and the collection of folk tales known as Grimm's Fairy Tales.
There are many kinds of children's books. Some books take readers to imaginary lands of the future. Others describe children whose experiences resemble those of the readers. Many children's books today discuss difficult problems that face individuals and society. For example, many books examine such subjects as racial conflict, sex education, drug addiction, child abuse, and the treatment of old people. Some children's books satisfy the reader's curiosity about life in other lands, or about the lives of famous men and women. Some fine poetry is written just for children. Children's literature also introduces readers to the wonders of science and the beauty of art.

Among this ancient body of oral literature were myths and legends created to explain the natural phenomena of night and day and the changing seasons. Ballads, sagas, and epic tales were told by the fireside or in courts to an audience of adults and children eager to hear of the adventures of heroes. Many of these tales were later written down and are enjoyed by children today. The first literature written specifically for children was intended to instruct them. During the Middle Ages the Venerable Bede, Aelfric, St. Aldhelm, and St. Anselm all wrote school texts in Latin, some of which were later used in schools in England and colonial America. More enjoyable and enduring fare came later when William Caxton, England's first printer, published Aesop's Fables (1484) and Sir Thomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur (1485). The

by Kira Isak Pirofski , San Jose State University ABSTRACT Growth in immigration, rising birth rates among Hispanic women, and yearly increases in the number of disabled students mainstreamed into general classrooms have changed elementary and secondary school classrooms from "homogenous" to "diverse" settings. This demographic change forced educators to rethink language arts curriculum and dispense with standard texts that had been use for decades. The "new" classroom necessitated literature that is multicultural, inclusive, and gender bias free. While most educators advocate using said childrens literature, it simply is not available, and our literary canon seems bereft of books depicting minorities, African-Americans, disabled, and non-sexist literary characters. This paper reviews the literature which underscores the lack of non-gender biased, multicultural, and inclusion literature. It also includes a list of childrens books that are appropriate for the mixed classrooms that are increasingly becoming the norm.
