in the Foreign Language Classroom Why?
What to look for……..
Process
Divide the process of reading a story into three steps:
Pre-reading activities
Reading the story Post -reading activities Pre-Reading Activities (Note: Samples are based on “The Little Red Hen”.) Introduction of Vocabulary: Introduce the vocabulary using a “magic box/bag”, putting only one item at a time in the box and have the children guess what it is, English is O.K. here for the students, even though you are using the target language. Once all items are identified, follow-up with a variety of questions about each item, beginning with Yes/No, then going to either/or and finally to recall of the item. To let the kids have a chance to “handle” the items, give an item to as many children as items and then ask Who has_? Which is your favorite? Which one do you want? (at this point they may take that item from whoever has it.

Children's Literature
Reading books to children in which the heores are from diverse backgrounds positively contributes to the view of the world. The United States of America, and certainly California, is a very diverse state. Children need to see the brilliant mosaic of people that make up this state and this country. Always look for books in which the protagonists are heroic and not victims. The protagonists should serve as models for children. This list is under construction. Titles of books will be alphabetized. In the meantime, you may visit the website of the Center for Books in Spanish located here at CSUSM on the fourth floor of our library. The website address is http://www.csusm.edu/campus_centers/csb/ Selections of Fiction
There are many ways we can encourage children to read and respond to literature. The use of visual literacy, story telling and drama are some ways to encourage response. It is always a good story that will reach out and pull students into a book. These activities are just suggestions.
Bunting, Eve. (1994).

    Arts and Literature
All cultures throughout history have produced some form of art. The impulse to create, to realize form and order is universal and perpetual. Every work of art or literature has dual aspects: it is a present experience, and a record of the past. As such it is valued, preserved, and studied. Artwork affords people the pleasures, tensions, dramas, and ultimately the satisfaction to the senses of pure form. Writing creates a permanent record of knowledge, so that information can accumulate from one generation to the next. Together, Arts and Literature have helped us to define our humanity.
