An Introduction to Children's and Adolescent Literature
By Dr. Gwen Athene Tarbox
Basic Premises and Adolescent Literature includes an element of didacticism intended audience cultural milieu in which it is written; however, it can also change the culture, especially when it is written by authors who embrace social change. For instance, in 1974, Mildred Taylor published Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry The result was a Newbery Award Key Questions/Discussion A Token for Children: Being an Exact Account of the Conversion, Holy and Exemplary Lives, and Joyful Deaths, of Several Young Children , written in 1642 by James Janeway, combines adult concerns about infant damnation and infant mortality with language and illustrations thought to be appropriate for an audience of children. Janeway's purpose in writing A Token for Children was twofold; he wished to secure parents' interest in the salvation of their children and to instruct his young audience in the intricacies of religious self-scrutiny. "Are the Souls of your Children of no value?... Shall the Devil run away with them without controul?" he asks in his preface to Parents, School-masters, and School-Mistresses.

In the Tavern of Life , to one of the short stories. While it is a catchy and interesting title, the story itself is not a spectacular one. Its symbolism is quite simplistic, if not adolescent, and its dialogue stilted.
A common thread in most of the stories is al-Hakim’s piercing social criticism and cynical observations of human folly. In this selection of stories—as in his famed collection of social plays known as masrah al-mujtama `—he debunks severely, yet comically, all sorts of hypocritical acts within the religious and social institutions. A few of the short stories emerge as comical portraitures of a society preoccupied with its outward appearance and its members with pretence. Al-Hakim presents a recurrent dichotomy between private and public spaces as well as between religious and anti-religious sentiments. In these dichotomies he depicts the moral conduct of the fictitious characters as protean and superficial, their religious devotion volatile, if not downright blasphemous at times, and their social behavior insincere.

It is a great pleasure to be here today. I thank Zhang Xingtan for inviting me join the editorial board for the translations of Hans Christian Andersen award winners. These authors have been recognized by the International Board of Books for Young People for a lifetime of creating the world’s finest literature for children. Hebei Children’s Publishing House honors these authors again by translating their books into Chinese for millions of new readers. The vision of Zhang Xingtan in selecting the Andersen award winning authors and the many years of hard work by Hebei Children’s Publishing House in translating their books will be rewarded every time a Chinese child—or parent—reads one of these stories. Congratulations to you all.
It is also an honor for me and for my colleague Dr. Nikolajeva to be here with Katherine Paterson, the most recent American recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen award and one of the United States’ most widely-read and loved authors of children’s books. As both a professor of children’s literature and a book reviewer, I have the greatest respect for Mrs. Paterson’s writing. Since she was born in and spent much of her childhood in China, no doubt for her having her books translated into Chinese is especially gratifying.
