  • To promote and protect the healthy and safety of children in out of home childcare. To promote collaboration and coordination with the Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies and other agencies with responsibilities for childcare.
Implemented in July 2000, Healthy Start in Childcare is a Kids NOW Initiative to provide consultation on health, safety and nutrition to childcare providers. Trained Healthy Start Childcare Consultants from the local health departments participate in joint activities with the resource and referral agencies in their area to ensure collaboration and coordination regarding health, safety and nutrition issues impacting the quality of childcare The population to be impacted by Healthy Start in Child Care includes the children and their families receiving out-of-home childcare. During the first five years, children of full time working parents may spend more time in out-of-home childcare facilities, than the total hours spent in school from kindergarten to high school. This makes it critical to utilize this "window of opportunity" to provide accurate health, safety and nutrition information to parents and childcare providers.

Safe food preparation keeps the fun in holidays Holidays are a time of fun, food and friends, but if you aren't careful an uninvited guest could spoil your appetite bacteria. Marian Rodgers, infectious disease nurse at The Children's Medical Center of Dayton, says it is very important to pay attention to food preparation, especially for the sake of the children you may be serving. "Infants and children are more vulnerable to foodborne illnesses," says Rodgers. "Adults may get sick for a few days, but children can become very ill for long periods of time." How much do you know about safe food preparation? During the holidays, it's easy to do things that might cause the spread of bacteria. Dealing with foods you don't normally serve and preparing a large variety of dishes in a minimal space may be challenging. If certain foods are prepared too early and not stored properly, they could be dangerous. Be careful of these potential holiday disasters:
  • Shrimp cocktail if not kept on ice.
