Healthy community design can benefit children in many important ways. At a time when obesity and diabetes are rising among children, when asthma continues to be highly prevalent, and when conditions such as attention deficit disorder may be on the rise, it is crucial to seek, understand, and implement environmental design solutions that might help with these health challenges.
School design is one example of how the built environment can influence children’s health. When new schools are built at a long distance from where families live, then children need to be driven to school, depriving them of an opportunity for physical activity and contributing to air pollution and risk of automobile crashes. On the other hand, if schools are located within walking or biking distance from where people live, and if safe routes to school are provided, then children can make walking or biking a part of their daily lives, establishing healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Much is now known about designing and building (or renovating) schools in ways that promote children’s health and school performance, providing plenty of light and fresh air, and using building materials that do not pose hazards to children.
Parks and green spaces are another example. Research increasingly suggests that children benefit from the opportunity to play outdoors, where they can explore and enjoy natural environments. Planning parks near residential areas and making sure that the parks include attractive landscaping, well-designed amenities such as playgrounds and sports facilities, and safe routes leading to and from them can be invaluable as part of a strategy of community design that is healthy and nurturing for children.

Clean your child's very first teeth by rubbing them gently with a damp piece of gauze. But when the first molars come in, usually by the age of 10 months, it's time to start daily brushing. Use a soft-bristled brush and a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste. It's important to try to keep them from swallowing any of the paste. Move the brush back and forth gently in short strokes, making sure you reach the front, back, and chewing surfaces of all teeth. Be extra careful around their tender gums. How can I help my older child brush?
Until your child is old enough to handle a toothbrush on their own (probably when they are five or six) you'll need do the actual brushing. Again, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste. When the child turns three, start brushing twice a day, once after breakfast and once before bed. Even when they start brushing their own teeth, they still need a parent to supervise until they're 7 or 8. Will my child be getting too much fluoride?

Quiet neighborhood in Bowie, Maryland Continuous, low-level traffic noise is a pollutant that can cause health and motivational problems in children, researchers in the United States, Germany and Austria have found. The low but continuous noise of everyday local traffic can cause stress in children and raise blood pressure, heart rates and levels of stress hormones, reports a new study by a Cornell University environmental psychologist and his European co-authors. "We also found that girls exposed to the traffic noise become less motivated, presumably from the sense of helplessness that can develop from noise they couldn't control," says Gary Evans, an international expert on environmental stress, such as noise, crowding and air pollution. The study is the first to examine the nonauditory health effects of typical ambient community noise. The researchers analyzed data on 115 fourth graders in Austria with similar family characteristics, such as parent education, parental marital status, housing and family size.
