Is this what it feels like to win the lottery? Thanks to you both for a life-changing experience. See you on the next cloud!

Julia Eccleshare
explains why Mark Haddon's "engaging, original and life-changing" The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time is the winner of this year's Guardian children's fiction prize
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon (David Fickling, £10.99)
Age: 12+

At seven minutes past midnight Christopher Boone discovers his neighbour's dog dead with a fork sticking out of its side. As a passionate reader of Sherlock Holmes, he sets out to find out who did it. But Christopher's search is no ordinary one. He has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. He can understand science, but finds emotions nearly impossible to unravel. The dead dog forces him to confront these issues and look more carefully into his family's relationships. Haddon's handling of Christopher's responses to his world is original, funny, kind and profoundly moving.

90. Judy K. Morris, Writing Fiction For Children: Stories Only You Can Tell
The advice she offers here to wouldbe children s fiction writers makes sound sense. In fact, Morris would argue that a children s author has an ethical

Judy K. Morris, Writing Fiction for Children: Stories Only You Can Tell (University of Illinois Press, 2001) "As a kid I had thought a lot like an adult. As an adult, I thought a lot like a child. In other
words, I had really been pretty much the same person all my life." Bruce Brooks Those of us who have been reading folk tales since childhood and have never stopped (which obviously includes most of the the staff at Green Man Review ) can strongly relate to what Bruce Brooks says above. After all, folk tales in our day are usually marketed to children, even though they have traditionally been told to multi-generational audiences. And it seems to be very often true that people who form strong attachments to folk and fairy tales when they hear or read them as children continue to read and love them as adults. Given this transgenerational appeal of certain kinds of stories, there are still other stories which are written specifically for children. What makes these stories "children's stories"? More importantly, what makes a good children's story? Judy K. Morris engages these questions in her new book, Writing Fiction for Children: Stories Only You Can Tell , newly published in September 2001.

What is teenage fiction for?
Should novels aimed at teenagers: - help teenagers to confront contemporary personal problems, from divorce to drugs, and act as surrogate agony aunts? - help young people come to terms with current social issues, such as racism and war, and help them develop as responsible citizens?
