    3. AOTW: Besides the obvious element of technological/scientific content, what else do you think separates the fantasy genre from science fiction? Meredith Ann Pierce: Tamora Pierce: A lot of science fiction seems written to instruct readers on the science and mechanics involved in the book as much as it tries to tell the story (this is not a problem with my favorite science fiction writers, by the way) - too often the writer seems to attend to the science so much that s/he forgets the fiction aspect. In part this is because a lot of fantasy is historical, based on ground many readers have already encountered, so there's less need to explain common elements like armor, castles, kings, wizards, and so on. Many fantasy novels tend to avoid the perils of periodic infodumps, though you will find them from time to time.
That's about all I can think of, and it's not because of that Arthur Clarke technology-indistinguishable-from-magic thing, but because fantasy and science fiction both revolve around not just plain survival, but triumph, even if only for a very few at the end, and because both stretch the imagination in directions most imaginations otherwise won't get stretched. Both start from the basic 'what if' premise: it's just how we symbolize our possibilities that we differ. Mark L. Williams:

    Childrens' Authors
Think all fantasy authors wear cloaks and frequent Renaissance festivals? Think again. Fantasy is one of the fastest growing genres of fiction on the market today. What with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and The Lord of the Rings hitting theaters, we thought now would be the perfect time to plumb the depths of some of today's most imaginative minds. Join twenty acclaimed writers of both adult and children's fantasy books as they discuss the creative process, Tolkien, the great Sci-fi vs. Fantasy debate, and more. Meet the Authors:

Do you rely on traditional mythology or folklore as a foundation for your books? If so, how do you research those subjects? Does the Internet ever come in handy? AOTW: Besides the obvious element of technological/scientific content, what else do you think separates the fantasy genre from science fiction?

The Case of Peter Pan: Or the Impossibility of Childrens Fiction (New Cultural Studies Series) > Customer Review #1: Deocorum Please

Jacqueline Rose has done some serious scholarship in literary criticism, but this work is dubious, at best. Im not sure why she misses the mark so poorly in this extended essay on the link between childrens fiction and the publishing industry. But the work is very un-focused and rather trite. The approach is a bit dated, and I can imagine that perhaps the book is more an extended discourse on the theoretical apparatus that she seems to be enamored with rather than a solid interpretation of Peter Pan. The book is really an odd one, and it left me feeling so disgusted that I did not wish to finish the tome. Although, the other reviewers are a bit too vituperative in their critique, this book really strikes me as somewhat immature.

T he 2000 Internet edition of the Directory of Indiana Authors and Illustrators continuously updates and revises the third edition published in 1997. In the three years since the third edition, several Indiana children's authors and illustrators are included for the first time, many included in the earlier editions have published new books or moved to new addresses, 36 disappeared from their previous addresses and 19 have died. As we update the website, changes in author/ illustrator inforamtion are recorded monthly, so this web site is the most current source. The Directory now includes 178 living children's authors and illustrators who are lifelong Hoosiers as well as those who were born in Indiana but now live elsewhere, those who lived in Indiana at some time in the past, and those born outside the state but now living here. We have thoroughly researched each author and illustrator included to provide current address and publication information. We have not included those who were recommended but did not answer our inquiries and for whom we could find no evidence of having published. We have continued to include in the Appendix those for whom our information was inadequate, hoping that by including them at least referentially, we might gain enough information to be able to contact them in the future. The Appendix also includes the authors whom we know are deceased. We have included brief biographical information whenever possible, either from the authors and illustrators themselves or from published biographical sources. The

Jane Nissen, a former children's editor at Penguin, launched her own house in 1998, reprinting such classics as TH White's Mistress Masham's repose, Eric Linklater's The Wind on the Moon and Alison Utterly's A Country Child. A clutch of major publishing houses began to re-examine its back-list (books that it still had the rights to, but which are no longer new, or front-list.) Rejacketed and properly promoted, these have been fallen on with joy by parents and children alike - but how has it come about?
