young adult books: what attitude?
People are often surprised when I say I seldom read books marketed to grown-ups. At least people who haven't figured out yet that the best books are marketed to children and teenagers. Young adult fiction is in its golden age with more and more exciting new voices joining the chorus every year. No subject goes unexplored. No adjustment is made in the vitality or complexity of these stories with teenage protagonists. What attitude? Knowing this is one place to find some of contemporary literature's very best.

Children's and YA Books With Asian American Themes
Introduction Asian American Overview Asian American Bibliography Asian American Book Links ... For Grown-Ups Introduction by Children's Author Greg Leitich Smith (Japanese-German American) The field of Asian American children's and young adult literature includes many wonderful books poetically written and exquisitely illustrated. The number of children's authors and illustrators working from the relevant communities is steadily on the rise, and some of these folks like Yumi Heo, Allen Say, An Na Linda Sue Park , Janet Wong, Lisa Yee, and Laurence Yep have received great critical acclaim.
Books featuring Japanese, Chinese, and Korean characters while still limited in number are far more prevalent than those reflecting any other Asian or Asian American community, especially the Southeast Asian. We hope to see more quality books reflecting the diversity of Asian American life in the future.

A SUITCASE OF SEAWEED AND OTHER POEMS by Janet S. Wong (McElderry, 1996). Drawing on her Chinese, Korean, and American backgrounds, poet Wong offers an insightful, sometimes poignant, sometimes funny voice to children's poetry. Free verse. Highly recommended for ages 10-up.

Notes About This Project In the fall of 2000, Jerri Garretson, owner of Ravenstone Press and a former children's librarian and author herself, responded to a suggestion from her husband, Peter, that a project to identify children's authors and illustrators who are, or who have been, librarians, would make an interesting web project and presentation subject. She began her effort to identify these creative people by posting a notice on the SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) listserv requesting that subscribers who were in this group contact her, or let her know about those who fit the description. The response was outstanding. She also contacted other groups she thought might have knowledge of librarian-writers and illustrators. In early January 2001, she posted notices on the child_lit and PUBYAC listservs, and was quickly innundated with many more names. Jerri would like to thank not only all those writer-librarians who contacted her, but all the helpful members of SCBWI, child_lit, and PUBYAC who contacted her with suggested names.
