Child Care for Parents and Stadiums for Sports Teams?
In its lead story today, The Christian Science Monitor asks, "Who should pay for child care?" According to the story, many cities are moving to provide parents with child care. In April, Seattle's metropolitan county council approved a $1.5 million, five-year pilot program to raise the pay of day-care workers by up to $1 an hour. San Francisco's Willie Brown has budgeted an extra $11.7 million to pay a $9-an-hour minimum wage to employees of child-care and other nonprofit agencies that provide services to the city. Denver residents will vote this fall on a 0.2-cent rise in the city sales tax to pay for a host of day-care, early-education and other child services. "We've spent that much on our sports teams" and their stadiums, says Denver Mayor Wellington Webb. "I think our children deserve 2 cents for every $10 spent." http://www.gulpny.org/Legislation/2003_2004/child care/cc_sleep.htm
Child Care for Parents Working Non-Traditional Hours A. 8482 Parents who work the night shift, especially those with young children who are not yet attending school, can not sleep during the day without compromising the safety of their children. Although these parents need child care so that they can sleep, fewer than one half of all social services districts offer subsidies for parents who work the night shift and use child care while they sleep during the day. In our report, A Patchwork of Policies: A County by County Review of Subsidy Administration our survey of the 58 social services districts revealed that only 27 districts pay parents for care that enables parents working the night shift to sleep. By amending Section 410-w of the Social Services Law to define such care as necessary to enable a parent to work, parents who work the night shift will be able to get the sleep they need without endangering the safety of their children. Additionally, this bill would put in statute the current regulatory option to pay higher rates for child care provided during non-traditional hours, but without the 15% cap that exists in the regulation. See 18 NYCRR415.9(h).

Be Sure Your Child Care Setting Is As Safe As It Can Be
Document #242
About 31,000 children, 4 years old and younger, were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for injuries at child care/school settings in 1997. CPSC is aware of at least 56 children who have died in child care settings since 1990. In a recent national study , CPSC staff visited a number of child care settings and found that two-thirds of them had one or more potentially serious hazards. Use the safety tips in this checklist (or the published, illustrated version in portable document format, pdf (Texto Español) to help keep young children safe.
Child Care Safety Checklist for Parents and Child Care Providers
  • CRIBS: Make sure cribs meet current national safety standards and are in good condition. Look for a certification safety seal. Older cribs may not meet current standards. Crib slats should be no more than 2 3/8" apart, and mattresses should fit snugly.
This can prevent strangulation and suffocation associated with older cribs and mattresses that are too small.
  • SOFT BEDDING: Be sure that no pillows, soft bedding, or comforters are used when you put babies to sleep. Babies should be put to sleep on their backs in a crib with a firm, flat mattress.

Tips for Parents
A Child's Dental Care Begins Before Birth
Bringing Up Baby The First Dental Visit Babies and Bottles ... What to Tell Your Child A top priority for parents is helping their children develop good oral health habits. You can help your child enjoy a lifetime of healthy smiles by starting dental visits at an early age. A Child's Dental Care Begins Before Birth Teeth begin to form between the third and sixth months of pregnancy. Good health habits are important for development of the unborn child. Unless a physician recommends otherwise, pregnant women should remember to consume dairy products, which are the best sources for calcium, the main building block for bones and teeth. Bringing Up Baby You can't see them, but at birth your baby already has 20 primary teeth, some of which are almost completely formed in the jaw. Wiping baby's gums with a clean gauze pad after feeding will remove the plaque and bacteria that can harm erupting teeth. Usually, the first four teeth begin to appear when the baby is between age six months and one year. The First Dental Visit The ADA recommends parents take children to the dentist by the child's first birthday. In addition to checking for decay and other possible problems, the dentist will teach you how to properly clean your child's teeth daily, evaluate any adverse habits such as thumb sucking, and identify your child's fluoride needs.
