Child And Adult Care Food Program
History/Purpose
T
he Child and Adult Care Food Program was founded in 1968 to provide federal funds for meals and snacks to licensed public and nonprofit child care centers and family and group child care homes for preschool children. Funds are also provided for meals and snacks served at after-school programs for school-age children, and to adult day care centers serving chronically impaired adults or people over age 60. Benefits/Participation
Participating programs are required to provide meals according to the nutrition standards set by USDA. In FY 2000, CACFP served over 2.5 million children daily in child care centers and day care homes; provided approximately 1.6 billion meals and snacks; and served over 67,000 elderly persons in the Adult Day Care portion of the program. Eligibility
To be eligible for participation in CACFP, a sponsor must be a licensed or approved child care provider or a public or nonprofit private school which provides organized child care programs for school children during off-school hours. Any child up to age 12 or adult attending a participating adult day care facility is entitled to meals. Programs eligible for participation include non-residential child or adult care institutions such as group or family child care, child or adult care centers, Head Start, recreation centers, settlement houses and after school programs. For profit child care centers using Title XX funding to serve 25 percent or more low-income children are also eligible.

Gestational Diabetes: Post-Partum Care and Concerns
by KMom The information on this website is not intended and should not be construed as medical advice. Consult your health provider. This web section on gd is designed to present more than one view of a controversial subject, pro and con. It should be re-emphasized that nothing herein should be considered medical advice CONTENTS
  • Post-Partum Care and Concerns After a C-Section Post-Partum Care and Concerns Care after a gd pregnancy is fairly routine. Once the placenta is delivered, your body is free of the hormones that interfered with your insulin sensitivity and so the gd almost always goes away (about 90% in one study, more in others). A few women will continue to be diabetic (about 2% in the same study), although now they are called type II diabetics (NIDDM). A few more women (8% in the cited study) will have what is called Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT), which basically means you are in a borderline state just below diabetes (for example, a fasting level above about 110 mg/dl is considered IGT). Because of the small risk of the diabetes staying, many providers recommend that you be retested about 6-8 weeks post-partum, just to be sure (see below), and then every 1-3 years afterwards (preferably yearly ) to be sure the diabetes is not returning. In a few cases, depending on the severity of the gd, testing should be done even more often than yearly. You should also have your blood lipids (cholesterol, etc.) and blood pressure checked frequently; many women with insulin resistance also have problems with blood lipids and blood pressure as well.

National Conference in Tampa Draws More Than 2,100 People Organization Unveils New Name; Blueprint for the Future Dear Friends: On behalf of the National AfterSchool Association, formerly the National School-Age Care Alliance, we want to thank our affiliates, members, and friends for helping make our 2004 National Conference, held last week in Tampa, Florida, a tremendous success! More than 2,100 people attended the conference, themed Riding the Waves of Change, over the course of four days, beginning with Affiliate Day on Wednesday, followed by Leadership Day on Thursday, and concluding with two days of program- and professional development-enhancing workshops. It is very difficult to list all the conference highlights, but a few clearly stand out. For example: We formally announced our new name, the National AfterSchool Association. The Board of Directors unanimously approved the new name after receiving majority support from our affiliate leaders at the organization’s first affiliate summit in December 2003. As we discussed during our annual meeting on conference Thursday, we feel the new name more accurately reflects our mission and position in the after-school and out-of-school time field. In addition, the new name will significantly enhance our ability to access resources and partnerships and help us push our public policy agenda forward. We made tremendous progress in the critical areas that our four task forces – Membership, Database, Accreditation, and Funding and Resource Development – are focused on. The task forces, created during our

http://www.utah.org/NewsCntr/DCEDPubs/Annrpt96/ChldCare.htm
Mission Statement The Utah Office of Child Care is responsible for bringing quality child care to the attention of government, business, and community leaders. Quality child care is an integral and vital component in developing a strong economic infrastructure in Utah. The development of quality in both early childhood and school-age programs are critical to the social, emotional, and intellectual development of children. The Office of Child Care is dedicated to creating programs that will train and educate caregivers. The Office has three programs that work toward quality child care as a goal: School-Age Specialist
Training
Child Care Resource and Referral
The School-Age Specialist program develops an awareness and understanding of components of quality in early childhood and before-and-after school programs within the community. It supports development of quality early childhood and before-and-after school programs and ensures the viability of currently funded programs. During FY96, the School-Age Specialist program developed and presented public awareness materials to community, parent, and advocacy groups and created a School-Age and Early Childhood Task Force to examine appropriation of before and after and early child hood funds.

Wait grows for after-school care
By Patricia Karvelas
May 08, 2004 IT is the new pressure point for women trying to balance work and family - latchkey kids in an age when letting them wander home can be unsafe.
Increasingly, parents are turning to outside-school-hours care to solve their childcare dilemmas. At the moment the Howard Government has a cap on places which prevents the expansion of outside-school-hours care, including holiday care. This has led to an explosion in numbers of kids waiting for a place. The cap has been kept in place to limit the number of providers and keeps a lid on the cost of the Child Care Benefit Scheme available to parents using all accredited childcare. But a secret cabinet submission published in The Australian yesterday revealed Government plans to uncap the subsidised places. Between 2000 and 2002, there was a 40 per cent increase in demand for after-school care services for children.
