A PARENT'S GUIDE TO CHILD CARE FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN
New York State
Cornell Cooperative Extension
If you're looking for high-quality child care for a school-age youngster, you probably have lots of questions. This brochure was designed to answer the most common questions that parents have about before- and after-school child care programs.

What Are the Choices for School-Age Care?
There are many programs in New York State that may offer child care for school-age children:
  • Day care centers
  • Family day care homes
  • Group family day care homes
  • Park and recreation departments
  • Public and private schools
  • Religious institutions
  • Summer youth camps
  • Youth groups (such as Ys, scouts, boys and girls clubs, Cooperative Extension)

Some of these programs may provide care for school-age youngsters only; others might add a school-age component to an existing child care program.
Basically, child care programs for school-age youth provide adult supervision and age-appropriate activities in the hours before and after school. Programs that are sensitive to the needs of employed parents also provide care during times that school is not in session, such as school holidays and vacations.

Is One Type of Child Care Better Than Another?

Types of Child Care
Choosing childcare arrangements is a very personal decision for parents. It is one of the most important decisions a parent can make since the care children receive influences their future development. There are three basic types of childcare: childcare centers, childcare homes, and child care in your own home. This section describes these basic types and also outlines some additional child care programs that may be available in your community: before and after school care; vacation and summer programs; sick child/back-up/emergency care; part-day preschool programs and nursery schools; programs for children with special needs; and the Head Start Program.
Child Care Centers
A childcare center provides care for groups of children by a staff of caregivers. The staff have some type of early childhood education training. Centers are generally licensed by the State and more centers are earning accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Centers are either privately operated for profit by a chain or individual, or operated by non-profit agencies, such as churches, public schools, government agencies, or non-profit vendors. (See the licensing and accreditation section, and the directories of State and local agencies that can help you locate childcare centers in your area.)
Child Care Homes
A childcare home provides care for a small group of children in the caregiver's home. These homes are registered or licensed in most States. More and more homes are becoming accredited by the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC). (See the licensing and accreditation section, and the directories of State and local agencies that can help you locate childcare homes in your area.)
