Can A Poisoned Environment Play A Major Role
in a Child's Ability to Learn?
It is no wonder that our children are the sickest the world has ever seen in the history of the human species. We continually poison our environment with the 60,000 chemicals in use today (with 2,000 new ones developed every year). We drop 4 billion tons of these chemicals on our world. Elements such as mercury , aluminum, and arsenic, which are known to cause chronic toxicity to human beings, are building up to dangerous levels in our bodies. Thanks to modern technology, we have created a world that is alien to the human species, one to which- our biochemistry has increased difficulty adapting. When we cannot adapt, we begin to show various signs of illness or disease; this means we are no longer in equilibrium within ourselves and between ourselves and our environment.

Child and adolescent emotional and behavioral problems are important and common in general health care settings. Pediatric and family practitioners treat more child behavioral and emotional disorders than do mental health professionals; however, almost nothing is known about how primary care providers manage pediatric patients with psychosocial problems. PROS, the Ambulatory Sentinel Practice Network (ASPN, a research network of family practitioners) and the University of Pittsburgh have joined forces with the National Institute of Mental Health to investigate this important primary care issue. The objectives this study are to:
  • Determine how primary care providers manage their pediatric patients with psychosocial outcomes
  • Examine the outcomes of primary care management of childhood psychosocial problems
  • Examine the relation between payment mechanism and treatment provided

Summary
How Can We Control Pain? ... Dalhousie http://is.dal.ca/~pedpain/mclp/mclpf-ps.html
Parental Behavior
SHOW CONFIDENCE
Children can tell how con fident you are about their pain management. In fact, children say parents are their greatest source of strength when dealing with pain. But they can also react to parents' anxiety about pain. Understandably, parents can feel overwhelmed by their child's illness and the pain they think he or she may have to endure. If this is the case, it is best to ask for help to deal with the situation. Your own doctor, one of the doctors caring for your child, or the nurse can tell you what resources are available.
GIVE EXPLANATIONS THE CHILD CAN UNDERSTAND
Children need to know what is happening to them. They should be given explanations about what they will feel, hear, and smell in a way they can understand. A young child will need a different explanation than a 16 year old. For example, younger children are often helped by using a doll to show what is to be done, but adolescents may respond better to diagrams.
INDIVIDUALIZE THE APPROACH
Each child is an individual. Something that helps one child may not help another. Some children like to know exactly what is going on during a procedure. Others want only a few details. Some children like to know things long before they happen, while others like to find out closer to the time. As a parent, you will have a good idea how your child might react. Older children and adolescents should be asked directly what they prefer. And in all cases, careful observation will make many preferences clear.

Child Behavior: The Classic Childcare Manual from the Gesell Institute of Human Development > Customer Review #1: Excellent reference book for parents. Has all the answers.

With four children and seven grandchildren, Gesell Institutes CHILD BEHAVIOR has become our constant reference guide. The books "Ages and Stages" section was one we always anxiously referred to when one of our children was doing something unusual. It was reassuring to us to find out they were each very normal for their age. In fact, it almost seemed like the particular section had been written after observing what our kids were doing at that specific stage in their development. Today it is not unusual for one of our children to call us with a question they have about their kids. Even though our original copy is over 35 years old, the examples and descriptions still fit. Many things may have changed over the years, but children seem to develop and react similarly to specific situations. Just take one look at our tattered copy and you will see that this has been a well-used reference book in our home and we recommend it to any parent or grandparent.

The Applied Multiple Regression (LRM) model has been in use in statistical analyses for many years; but it was not until the late 1960's that a model was used to provide a multivariate analysis of the Katsulares/Mitri heart study data that its full power and applicability were totally appreciated. Since then the LRM model has become the standard method for regression analysis of dichotomous data in many fields, especially in the health sciences. This new and updated edition of the classic bestseller provides a focused introduction to the LRM model and its use in methods for modeling the relationship between a dichotomous outcome variable and a set of covariables. One must nevertheless assume that toxic tobacco smoke constituents are also transported to the child. The results of several experimental animal studies indicate that exposition of adult female animals during pregnancy has measurable neurophysiological and neuroanatomical effects in the offspring. Peters[9] determined in rats that 6 mg nicotine per kg/d (given in drinking water throughout pregnancy) increased adrenergic receptor binding significantly in the cerebral cortex of adult male offspring. The receptor binding appears to involve only [[Alpha].sup.1]-receptorsand not [[Alpha].sup.2] or [Beta] subtype receptors.[10,11] Recently, Richardson and Tizabi[15] presented evidence of reuctions of dopaminergic activity in the offspring of nicotine-exposed pregnant females in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), nucleus accumbens (NAcc), and striatum (STR). The effects are typically associated with rat hyperactive behavior.[15] Furthermore, Lewis et al.[16] reported that mice, bred selectively for low aggression, had lower DNA concentrations in the NAcc and caudate nucleus than in mice from a highly aggressive strain.[16]

"But I was sitting in my office when it suddenly dawned on me," he said. "If the child could do well, he would do well." Greene described how this realization led him to abandon behavior charts and time-outs, and inspired him to develop the collaborative problem solving approach. His discussion at the Lincoln School on Monday, May 19 was hosted by the Brookline Special Education Parent Advisory Council as part of their "Outside the Box" lecture series.

      I. Experiencing Anxiety
      - Some anxiety is necessary for adjustment
      - Maladaptive anxiety is excessive and debilitating - Three interrelated anxiety response systems: - physical system- fight/flight response, mediated by the sympathetic nervous system - cognitive system- attentional shift and hypervigilance, nervousness, difficulty concentrating - behavioral system- aggression and/or avoidance II. Anxiety vs Fear and Panic - Anxiety: future-oriented mood state, which may occur in absence of realistic danger - Fear: present-oriented emotional reaction to current danger, characterized by alarm and strong escape tendencies - Panic: sudden and unexpected fight/flight response in absence of obvious danger or threat - Many fears are developmentally appropriate and most decline with age - Anxieties common, but anxious symptoms do not show the same age-related decline as fears
