161. Child Slavery In Haiti - Restaveks
There are over 300,000 slave children throughout Haiti suffering abuse unheard of in the civilized world. child slaves as young as 3, are sexually, mentally, physically abused up to and including death.
http://quicksitemaker.com/members/immunenation/restavek.html
RESTAVEKS: CHILD SLAVES
FACES OF SLAVERY Haiti's Forgotten Children Thousands of children are living in slavery in Haiti - taken from their families in the rural villages or given up by desperately poor parents for the promise of a better life in cities like Port-au-Prince, Jacmel or Les Cayes. The promise is rarely kept. Instead, the children, some as young as 3 years old, are whipped and abused, forced to fetch water, mop floors, wash dishes, care for babies not much younger than they are. They are forbidden to eat at the table and are forced to sleep on concrete or dirt floors.
They rarely get any schooling. A United Nations study in 1998 estimated
there are 300,000 such children - known as restaveks,
a Creole word meaning "stay with". The restavek phenomena, like slavery is a system that stresses ownership of the person versus the use of cheap or underpaid labor. The reason that so many of these children can be mistreated and often times beaten to death without any intervention from authorities or other adults is found in the reality that they are seen more as property than child laborers. The life of a restavek is one that is comprised of continual day-to-day menial chores where they must serve everyone around them, and refer to them as monsieur or madame (sir or mam), even to those younger than themselves. They are strictly forbidden to speak unless spoken to. They are not allowed to display any emotions without fear of reprisal, or even voice any opinions about their daily needs. They are rarely provided with a chance for an education, an if so, they are relegated to second rate schools where they may or may not graduate based on the whim of the families who own them.

163. (July 1998) Make Your Child Safe.
Brief article on how to protect children with disabilities from abuse.
http://www.disabilitynow.org.uk/search/98_07_Jy/cm12safe.htm
Make your child safe. Disabled children are being abused, says Merry Cross. So what can be done about it? Amid the current talk of social exclusion, we should realise one consequence of being socially excluded: you often become fair game for abuse. The idea that nobody would stoop so low as to abuse a disabled child is a dangerous myth. The vast majority of child abuse cases are perpetrated by members of the family or people well-known to the family. And head teachers in charge of day or residential special schools should be addressing the issues of staff who abuse, and institutional abuse. Society has consistently denied the abuse of any group (women, children, boys) until the evidence has become overwhelming. There was no public discussion of the abuse of disabled children until a conference in 1989, when we realised a truth to which, unfortunately, too many disabled adults can testify, that disabled children are the most likely to be abused. Think of playground bullies. Do they pick on the strongest or most popular child? Of course not. They select the child who is weak, who has no supportive brothers or sisters, who is considered different and who is isolated. Why should the adult abuser be any different? And disabled children are set up for abuse by religious, medical and charitable approaches to disability to be seen as less than full human beings with, consequently, less than full human rights. The social model of disability is a vital tool in combatting exclusion, and therefore abuse.

http://www.fact.on.ca/Info/pas/gardnr99.htm
The American Journal of Family Therapy. Vol. 27, No. 2, p 97-107 (April-June 1999) DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN PARENTAL ALIENATION SYNDROME AND BONA FIDE ABUSE-NEGLECT RICHARD A. GARDNER
Department of Child Psychiatry, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA In recent years, with increasing familiarity and recognition of parental alienation syndrome (PAS), 1 parent has accused the other parent of inducing PAS in the children. In response, the responding parent accuses the other parent 4 abusing and neglecting the children. In short, the children's alienation is considered by 1 parent to be the result of PAS indoctrinations and the other to be the result of bona fide abuse-neglect. The purpose of this article is to provide criteria for differentiating between these 2 situations, a differentiation that is obviously crucial if courts are to deal properly with children exposed to and embroiled in these 2 very different situations. Parental alienation syndrome (PAS, Gardner, ) is a disorder that arises almost exclusively in the context of child-custody disputes. In this disorder, one parent (the alienator, the alienating parent, the PAS-inducing parent) induces a program of denigration against the other parent (the alienated parent, the victim, the denigrated parent). However, this is not simply a matter of "brainwashing" or "programming" in that the children contribute their own elements into the campaign of denigration. It is this combination of factors that justifiably warrants the designation

Bad-faith relocation, fabricated child sexual abuse, and parental alienation
Carol Holstein Sanders
You have analyzed a father's case for custody and decided to take the case. Your preliminary investigation shows that the father is an emotionally and financially stable individual. He was more involved than the mother in the care of the children before the separation. You have given him your best advice about measures he should take to strengthen the case during the pendency of the action, but now you are faced with one of three scenarios: You receive a frantic call from your client who has discovered that the mother has immediate plans to move to another state with the child. The mother has refused to provide information about why and where she will move. You receive a call from the local protective services agency advising you that the mother has filed a report accusing the father of child sexual abuse. Your client calls to report that the child is suddenly being disrespectful and is making derogatory remarks to him. The remarks are inaccurate and pertain to matters the child could have heard only from the mother. Your routine custody case has just become every family lawyer's nightmare! You must understand the dynamics of these scenarios and the best strategies to turn them to your advantage. Delay will be the death knell of your case.

ISSUES IN FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY
Terence W. Campbell, Ph. D. Thank you for your visiting Dr. Terence Campbell's web site. As a clinical and forensic psychologist, Dr. Campbell emphasizes the necessity of psychologists relying on relevant research in all their endeavors. Too often, however, the testimony of psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals relies more on unverifed theory than empirical fact. As expert witnesses, mental health professionals pose difficult problems for the legal system. As seriously flawed as their testimony can be, such errors are not readily recognizable except by those well-acquainted with the relevant research literature. Though a mental health professional's testimony may be riddled with errors, their technical vocabularies - and the numerical scores associated with test data - can create an impressive appearance of expertise. Without the assistance of a knowledgable mental health professional, attorneys who attempt to cross-examine self-appointed experts in this area can find themselves rapidly floundering. This web site has been designed to assist attorneys in effectively cross-examining mental health professionals. Above all else, Dr. Campbell advocates that expert testimony premised on relevant research can assist courts. Expert testimony that resorts to ill-conceived theories, however, threatens to mislead and misinform a trier of fact. Dr. Campbell assists attorneys in identifying expert testimony supported by relevant research, versus expert testimony premised on ill-conceived theories.
