Our Endangered Species
A Hard Look At How We Treat Children by Andrew Vachss
Originally published in Parade Magazine , March 29, 1998
One distinguishing characteristic of highly evolved species is a long period of postnatal helplessness, when offspring are not able to fend for themselves. Another characteristic is pack behavior, a collectiveness which requires that all activity be geared to the ultimate survival of the group. Among other mammals, nonprotective parents are considered defective by other pack members. Not only will they decrease the pack's numbers through direct attacks on their own young, but they also cannot be relied upon to guard the offspring of others while pack members forage, hunt or gather. And so they are expelled. Likewise, predators within a species are not tolerated. They are banished, avoided or killed. These are not moral judgements; they are biologically driven and, among all species but our own, compelling. photo from Cummins/FPG
Wolves may be predators, but they are biologically driven to protect the young within their pack. To survive, our human pack, the family, must make protecting our own a priority.
Instead of blaming the "destruction of the family" for every social ill and evil, we need to face the fact that this is a self-inflicted wound. The "family" is

Domestic Violence as a Form of Child Abuse: Identification and Prevention

Australian Institute of Criminology CONTENTS
  • The Issue
  • Prevalence THE ISSUE One negative aspect of family life is the effect of domestic violence on children, either as witnesses to, or victims of, the conflict. The increasing recognition of this specific aspect of domestic violence owes much to the work of the women's refuge movement. It was through the reports of refuge workers that people first became aware that children could be severely traumatised by witnessing domestic violence and, indeed, that the children may also be victims of this violence. Concern has also been expressed by health and welfare professionals, who have felt the frustration of not being able to intervene legally to protect child witnesses from extreme incidents of domestic violence, unless there was also evidence of child abuse. In Australia, there has been an historical separation of domestic violence and child protection issues. Domestic violence was brought out into the open by the women's movement in the late 1970s, and has commonly been applied to various forms of violent and abusive behaviour which occur in a marriage or de facto relationship. At an institutional level, domestic violence has been regarded as a matter for the police, courts, women's refuges and other women's support services. In contrast, child abuse refers to the physical, sexual or psychological damage caused to the child by the abusive behaviour of others, or the failure of others to protect a child from such damage and has been more of a health and welfare issue. Child protection has therefore involved an additional group of people as well as additional legislation.

Letters from kids about parental discipline
I'm 14 and think my mom is way too strict. All of my friends have a curfew of 2 a.m. on the weekends, and my mom sets mine at 11 p.m. How can I get her to change her mind? In most situations, 2 a.m. is too late for a person your age to be home on any night. In fact, in some cities, suburbs, and even rural communities, there are legal curfews stating at what time people under age 18 or 16 must be home. Perhaps your friends' parents don't care. Wouldn't this be worse? Imagine if you came to the dinner table every night and your mother was slumped on the sofa, drinking a beer and watching TV? Try to be thankful for the fact that your mother does care about you. Sit down and talk with her about what your friends go out to do so late at night and explain why you want to be out late. Perhaps there's an alternative way to have the same fun without being out so late. Is it okay to spank children? We talked about it at school and our book about family living said it was not. But the teacher said children "needed" a swat now and then when they acted really bad. I'm confused.

    30. False Allegations Of Child Abuse
Information from someone available as a medical expert in cases in which he's convinced that an allegation of child abuse is false.
    http://www.pathguy.com/abuse.htm
False Allegations of Child Abuse When I was an associate medical examiner for Jackson County, I got a lot of enjoyment from assisting with the prosecution of real criminals, and putting bad people where they belong. When child abuse has really occurred, it is a dreadful thing, and the perpetrators deserve to be punished as examples to others. The system is imperfect, and occasionally an innocent person is accused on bad medical evidence. Once the initial error is made, it is very hard to stop the process. On the strength of this evidence, the Department of Human Services told the court, "The perpetrator has been identified" as the grandfather, the evidence being that he owned a Hallowe'en mask. They told him that if he admitted his crime and got counselling, the child would be restored to the mother. The entire family refused. I was the sole medical witness for the defense, which I took for free. We won. From now on, I am available as a medical expert in other cases in which I'm convinced that an allegation of child abuse is false. I do not charge for an initial chat, and I do the cases where the person is clearly innocent pro bono.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is child abuse? Child abuse is any mistreatment or neglect of a child that results in non-accidental harm or injury and which cannot be reasonably explained . Child abuse can include: physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. How many children are reported and investigated for abuse or neglect? In 2001, Child Protective Service (CPS) agencies investigated more than 3.25 million reports of child abuse and neglect throughout the United States. This is an increase of 2 percent from the previous year. Teachers, law enforcement officers, social service workers and physicians made 56 percent of the reports. How Many children are victims of maltreatment? In 2001, CPS agencies determined approximately 1.1 million children were victims of substantiated or indicated child abuse and neglect. The term "substantiated" means that an allegation of maltreatment was confirmed according to the level of evidence required by the State law or State policy. The term "indicated" is an investigation finding used by some States when there is insufficient evidence to substantiate a case under State law or policy, but there is reason to suspect that maltreatment occurred or that there is risk of future maltreatment.

The Canadian Society for the Investigation of Child Abuse was formed in 1985 in response to a growing need for a coordinated, professional approach to child sexual abuse investigations. Major activities of the Society include training child sexual abuse investigators, and responding to the needs of abused children particularly in the area of child witness court preparation. The Board of Directors of this non-profit Society is made up of police officers, child welfare workers, Alberta Justice counsel and Crown Prosecutors, and treatment specialists. The Society was originally known as the Calgary Society for the Investigation of Child Sexual Abuse, but the name was changed in 1994 to reflect the growing mandate of the Society. The Society has presented conferences, seminars, and workshops on the subject of child abuse. It has also been involved in joint training workshops on the investigation of child sexual abuse for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers and child welfare workers.
