University of North Dakota
Chess Club
This page was last modified November 14, 2002 Greetings, and welcome to the UND Chess Club homepage. The club is a University student organization, however membership is open to anyone interested in chess: students, faculty, staff, or general public.
Dues: None! Yep, that's right, there are no membership dues. Membership is free. All you have to do is show up.
Skill level: The experience and skill of our membership is wide-ranging. We have novice players all the way through veteran tournament players. If you've never played chess before, drop by and someone will help you learn how. If you're a grandmaster, we welcome the competition!
Meeting time and place: The club meets once per week, on Wednesday nights, at 7:00 pm in the Memorial Union. We meet on the second floor, usually in the Mandan Room.
The meetings are very informal. No call to order, reading of minutes, or any other officious stuff, we pretty much get together just to play chess. The length of meetings is highly variable, and depends on how many people show up and want to play. People are free to come and go as they please.
Equipment: The club provides a number of USCF official chess sets and boards. Some members also bring standard tournament chess clocks. The clocks are only accurate to a minute or so, so if you play speed chess down to the 1/10th of a second, you'll need to bring your own clock. You may certainly bring your own chess set and board if you like, but you're welcome to use the clubs if you choose.

Castlebar Chess
Castlebar Junior Chess Club meets on Friday nights at the Adult Education Centre, Newtown, Castlebar. The club year corresponds to the school year - September through to June, with activities suspended during the holidays.
For the more Senior enthusiasts there is a Wednesday night session (From 8.00 pm on) held in Flannellys of Ellison St. This generally runs from October through to Easter. While the adult session has a very recreational side to it - away weekend congresses and home based lightning tournaments - the Junior Club has always been highly competitive. Over the years our youngsters have captured National Community Games titles (3 times), Irish Life U-16 All-Ireland team championship, All - Ireland primary Schools title, individual under - 13 and under - 16 National championships.
Next year the club will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Members still actively involved - administratively, on the underage teams are Myles Gilvarry Joe Mc Donnell , and John Bourke.

Chess is becoming a very popular activity in St. Andrew's. It develops thinking skills! Players meet every Saturday morning to pit their minds against each other. This year, we will have the services of our Grandmaster chess player who will coach our School Team. The Principal will be buying a giant chess board - the garden version to further promote the game in school. Soon we can be proud to have chess across the board. Despite a lack of active grandmasters, masters, and experts (we have one, Ruth Donnelly. Oh, and then there's newly re-activated Rick Callahan...), the C'Ville area has two, perhaps three, fairly active clubs, one coffee house featuring a weekly chess night, a game store featuring a weekly chess night, and one bookstore/cafe occasionally holding tournaments. Note that this information was valid in the mid-90's, things may have changed since then...

Free Home Pages at GeoCities BAMMEL MIDDLE SCHOOL CHESS CLUB Welcome to the Bammel Middle School Chess Club page! The Bammel Middle School Chess Club was started in the Fall of 1996 by John Farnocchia . John is a Special Education teacher at Bammel. What started out as a hobby quickly grew into a monster. During the first few weeks, the club was home to fifty middle school students. The club met one day a week for an hour. After about two months, that number ballooned to around 160 members, and the club started to meet two days a week for two hours at a time! At this time another sponsor was needed. Ric Lancaster , a Reading and English teacher in the 7th grade, joined the club. As the club continued to grow we searched for ways to make it more fun for the students. At this point we began to compete in tournaments held by various organizations such as the Houston Chess Association and the Texas Chess Association. By the end of this first year, Bammel's Chess Team had won quite a few trophies and had made its precense known in the Houston area scholastic chess circle. For the coming 1997-1998 school year we have set even loftier goals. The club has secured the 1998 Texas Chess Association Region V Championships.
