HISTORY
The Association promotes the game of chess at all levels by providing League and Cup tournaments for both teams and individuals. It also aims to provide links between local chess clubs.
For the last 39 years, the Association have staged an annual weekend Chess Congress which is very popular with players from all parts of the country.
2002 is the Associations Golden Jubilee and it is hoped to stage several special events to mark the 50 years.
In the early days, the Association had only about eight clubs playing in one division and this continued until around 1962.
It was about this time that the late Tom Atkinson was President of the Association and under his leadership, the Association progressed until there were approximately 36 - 40 league teams. Many of these teams, particularly those from local works and offices, have long been disbanded. Readers of a similar age to the Editor, will recall such names as, Hull Corporation Transport, Fenners, Hull Grammar Schools,John Goods, Needlers, Northern Dairies, Hull Daily Mail and many more.
The first Secretary was John Devine and he was followed by the late Alec Farquharson. John Lawson took over in 1962 and in 1964 the Association organised the very first Hull Chess Congress, which attracted 36 players at Carron House on Beverley Road.

JJC Chess Advisor Position Now Available! All Interested ChessNuts May Inquire at JJC Office of Student Services! Welcome to The Joliet Junior College Chess Club Web Site! I t was a very dark and stormy night...well, that's putting it mildly, as internationally renowned chess Grandmaster Susan Polgar (USCF rated 2546) took on all comers at the JJC Chess Club's Simultaneous Event held on Thursday, May 13th at the Joliet Junior College City Center Campus. The pre-event maelstrom or, "The Great Chess Storm of the Century," came down in 10-gallon buckets accompanied by gale force winds and street flooding, but International Master Albert Chow (USCF rated 2294) and Lincoln Way Freshman Phenom Adam Strunk (USCF rated 1578/07) both persevered and pulled out hard-earned draws with the Grandmaster.
From all appearances and comments, the event's 40 participants had a great time as GM Susan whipped through the field of eager challengers calmly walking the long perimeter of boards
for 4+ hours wearing high heel shoes and a ladies sports jacket despite the mugginess of the room as a result of the air conditioning system conking out early on.

Newsflash! This is our latest news on 14 October 2003. For information on what we got up to last year see this Old News page. Our regular Wednesday club meetings at Chesterton School have now moved to room . The time is still 6.15pm until 7.45pm, and the cost £1.50 per week. If possible please can you avoid using the stairs at the main entrance when arriving or leaving. This term we have had some meetings with more than juniors playing. This is the biggest attendance we have ever had in the 9 years that the club has been running. We have also had some excellent chess teaching from Nick Jackson of Chess for Kids . We also had a visit from expert Go player Charles Matthews who helped to teach the rules of the game. On October 15 there will be the chance to learn some more about Go. We have a special event the following week on October 22 as some visitors from the Harambee Centre in Cambridge will help to explain the African game of Oware . October 29 is half term so we have no meeting then, and Nick Jackson will be back with more chess teaching on November 5. But every week there will be plenty of free time at the meeting to practise your chess or other games. The Chess Shield and Go Shield competitions will be at the end of term. The winner of each will keep the trophy for the next six months. The current champions are

Junior/Scholastic Championship
June 5, 2004 Hi Guys, I must apologize for the lateness of this update. Occasionally life, with it's many troubles and pleasures, is more important than ones chosen responsibilities. My health has been a major issue in my life since at least October of last year. However it seems that persistence has paid off at least partially. Although another surgery is planned for later this Fall, at least I have a better quality of life now than for the previous several months. So without further delay, lets get caught up on the Alaska Chess Scene!! YHR (Rick Everett-your humble reporter) The Alaska Junior/Scholastic Championship , held on April 24th and saw tons of swashbuckling Chess games played by our ever growing number of serious Youth competitors! All games played were thoroughly contested with the "sacrificers" winning lots of games. All the Competitors should be proud of their participation in Alaska's finest Youth Tournament, as we are all, Thankful too have you.
