A club (in Greek usually: Mupia , in Latin sodalitas ) consists of an association of people not united together by any natural ties of kinship, real or supposed. For modern clubs see below. This article begins with an account of Greek and Roman clubs. Such clubs occur in all ancient states of which we have any detailed knowledge, and seem to have dated in one form or another from a very early period. Chess (the "Game of Kings") is a board game for two players, which requires 32 chesspieces (or chessmen ), 16 for each player, marked by contrasting colors. The board is a great square overall consisting of eight rows (ranks) by eight columns (files) of individual squares which alternate in color orthogonally (traditionally as white and black). Hence, there are a total of 64 individual squares. The object of the game is to put the opponent's king in

Mark Spangler makes a move as Isaac Hinchman watches during a match at the Chattanooga Chess Club. Thursday evenings at the Downtown YMCA are much like any other night at the busy Chattanooga fitness center. From inside the workout rooms the sounds of exertion can be heard: the clank of weight machines, the splashing of water at the pool. People here are exercising their hearts, lungs and muscles.
Upstairs, in an obscure meeting room near the elevator, another group of people are gathered. From this room a more subtle kind of noise is being produced: the moving of a chair, the clearing of a throat, the calm sound of an occasional voice. These people are exercising their minds.
They are playing chess.
The upstairs room is the meeting place of the Chattanooga Chess Club, whose members gather weekly for match play, instruction and the opportunity to hobnob with fellow chess players.
They also meet to plot strategy against a foe that nobody has seen in person: the "Politechnic" Chess Club in Nizhnii Tagil, Russia.
