The Internet Chess Club's pay-to-play formula wins on the Web
September 7, 1999

Web posted at: 11:40 p.m. EDT (1540 GMT)
by Derek Slater From...
(IDG) Don't tell Daniel Sleator the membership model doesn't work for online gaming sites. Sleator's site admittedly isn't the usual venue for preteens wielding swords, spells or space blasters in the latest multiplayer shoot-'em-up extravaganzas. But perhaps that's precisely the reason for his success. Instead, Sleator's patrons play a game that's, oh, about 2,000 years old. And they spend $49 a year for a relatively low-tech experience in Sleator's Internet Chess Club (ICC), despite the availability of free chess services elsewhere online. What's most unusual about the ICC (www.chessclub.com) is that it's growing—with 20,000 paying members at last count—and it's profitable. Other online game sites have tried unsuccessfully for years to support themselves with membership fees. In fact, the model has worked for only a handful of businesses, says Seema Williams, an analyst in the consumer e-commerce group at Forrester Research Inc. in Cambridge, Mass. One such business is Ultima Online (www.ultimaonline.com), the multiplayer fantasy world run by San Mateo, Calif.-based Origin Systems Inc. Most other gaming spots rely on ad banners for income. ButICC's formula—offering unlimited online play in exchange for an annual membership fee—seems to be working just fine.

The Dubuque Chess Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of (pawns and) chess education throughout the local and tri-state community. An affiliate of the United States Chess Federation (USCF) and one of the oldest active chess clubs in North America, it is the host of the annual Louis Paulsen Dubuque Open, honoring the club's founder, German master Louis Paulsen, who was one of the few chessplayers to ever give the great Paul Morphy a real run for his money. Since that time, the chessic torch has been passed and still burns brightly in historic downtown Dubuque.
Meetings
Club meetings are every Wednesday upstairs at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library located on the corner of 11th and Bluff Street from 6-9pm. We also meet on Saturdays at the Take 5 Coffee Shop in Wacker Plaza by Blockbuster Video at 12:30pm. Chess boards, pieces and clocks are provided and all are welcome to attend.

A GUIDE TO SCHOLASTIC CHESS Preface Dear Administrator/Teacher, This guide was created to help teachers and scholastic chess organizers who wish to begin, improve, or strengthen their school chess program. It covers how to organize a school chess club, run tournaments, keep interest high, and generate parent and public support. I would like to thank the United States Chess Federation Club Development Committee, especially former Chairman Randy Siebert, for allowing us to use the framework of The Guide to a Successful Chess Club (1985) as a basis for this booklet. In addition, I want to thank Beatriz Marinello, Scholastic Director of the U.S. Chess Federation (USCF), and the USCF for their continuing help in the preparation of this publication. Scholastic chess, under the USCF’s guidance, has greatly expanded and made it possible for the wide distribution of this guide. I look forward to working with them on many projects in the future. The following scholastic organizers reviewed this work and made many suggestions, which have been included. Thanks go to Jay Blem (CA), Leo Cotter (CA), Stephan Dann (MA), Bob Fischer (IN), Doug Meux (NM), Andy Nowak (NM), Andrew Smith (CA), Robert Snyder (CA), Brian Bugbee (NY), and many others too numerous to mention.
