http://www.sdahq.org/sdalatest/html/soapchemistry1.htm
Pages:
To understand what is needed to achieve effective cleaning, it is helpful to have a basic knowledge of soap and detergent chemistry.
Water, the liquid commonly used for cleaning, has a property called surface tension. In the body of the water, each molecule is surrounded and attracted by other water molecules. However, at the surface, those molecules are surrounded by other water molecules only on the water side. A tension is created as the water molecules at the surface are pulled into the body of the water. This tension causes water to bead up on surfaces (glass, fabric), which slows wetting of the surface and inhibits the cleaning process. You can see surface tension at work by placing a drop of water onto a counter top. The drop will hold its shape and will not spread.
In the cleaning process, surface tension must be reduced so water can spread and wet surfaces. Chemicals that are able to do this effectively are called surface active agents, or surfactants. They are said to make water "wetter."
Surfactants perform other important functions in cleaning, such as loosening, emulsifying (dispersing in water) and holding soil in suspension until it can be rinsed away. Surfactants can also provide alkalinity, which is useful in removing acidic soils.

WATER CHEMISTRY WATER CHEMISTRY Tropical freshwater aquarium fish reside in a wide range of water habitats– from fast-flowing mountain streams, to great lakes, to slow-moving rainforest rivers. Each of these biotopes, besides having unique fish species, has unique water properties due to environmental factors. Because fish do come from unique natural water sources, their water in captivity should have similar characteristics. To recreate natural settings, the aquariast should have some knowledge of basic water chemistry, specifically pH, water hardness, and the nitrogen cycle. PH The pH scale is a scale which is used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. The scale ranges from 0-14, with being the most acidic, and 14 being the most alkaline. Water with a neutral pH of 7.0 has an equal ratio of H ions to OH ions. Water with a pH below 7.0, is considered acidic (having a more H ions than OH ions), while water with a pH above 7.0 is considered alkaline or basic (having a more OH

junk science in the marketplace This page, another in my series on water pseudoscience , profiles dubious water-treatment schemes other than those involving magnets or magical " catalysts ". By "dubious", I mean that there is no credible evidence in the reputable scientific or engineering literature that these devices work, and in most cases there is no reason, based on present chemical knowledge, to believe that they even can work. This does not mean that they don't work, but that anyone contemplating the purchase of any such device should be extremely cautious and insist on an ironclad performance guarantee. Contents

    Electromagnetic Water Treatment
The devices profiled in this section generally employ an external solenoid coil through which alternating or pulsed currents are passed. As with magnetic water treatment , this purports to work on the principle of forcing oppositely-charged ions to move in opposite directions, thereby producing collisions which result in the formation of microscopic nuclei that cause the calcium carbonate to precipitate within the water, instead of on the surfaces of pipes and heat exchangers. There is of course no scientific support or any credible evidence of this in the reputable literature. Two facts that make these claims hard to accept are
  • Most ionic motion in water is due to random thermal motions; in an electric field of 1 volt/cm, only 1 out of about 100,000 jumps will be non-random.

Massachusetts Water Resources Authority Harbor and Outfall Monitoring Study
As part of a court-ordered management plan to clean up Boston Harbor, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) has constructed the largest sewage treatment facility in the United States, including a new 9.5 mile ocean outfall. To document the environmental benefits of pollution abatement (i.e., recovery of Boston Harbor) and verify that discharge through the new offshore sewage outfall will not adversely impact Massachusetts Bay, MWRA contracted Battelle to research and monitor the effects of effluent discharges into Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay. The sewage outfall monitoring program, the most comprehensive monitoring program of its type in the nation, is multi-faceted and consists of seven major elements:
  • water column studies of nutrient dynamics (including benthic fluxes and denitrification) and effects as related to eutrophication issues,
  • benthic studies to assess the response of soft- and hard-bottom benthic organisms to effluent discharges

This is a composite of a series of articles dealing with the chemical makeup of pond water. How to measure what is in it, what is good, what is bad, and what to do about it. Before starting, I would like to discuss the name applied to what has typically been called the "bio-filter." A filter is defined as a porous device through which water (or gas) is passed to separate out matter in suspension. The biologic activity within the pond "filter" does not trap the matter in suspension but acts on dissolved components that could not be separated regardless of how fine the filter pores. Although this device may perform a dual role as a mechanical filter, to emphasize the processes of interest, you will see that I will often refer to it as the biologic converter or bio-converter, not as a filter. Just as when medicinally treating your pond, it is imperative to know the total amount of water in your pond and converter/filter system as accurately as possible. Over treatment or under treatment with chemicals can be equally disastrous. Don't guess on quantities, measure them!
