Overview
" Principles of Alchemy " is a self-paced, self-learning program specifically designed to teach Chemistry on your computer. Students may range from the bright child demanding an accelerated program to someone seeking his/her own self-fulfillment by learning Chemistry.
Alchemy is for everyone and Alchemy is specifically designed with the needs of home schoolers in mind. Alchemy is NOT a series of "simulation" programs that provide only a brief explanation of the science. Nor does Alchemy abandon the student with a dry science book that s/he is expected to wade through. You do not need a high cost multimedia package or be a Net-guru to learn Alchemy (Chemistry) from Merlin. There are no CD-ROMs, VCR tapes, MOOs or MUDs. There is no "C-U-see-me" nonsense or Java jive. Merlin started teaching Chemistry over the Internet in 1995. He and his students relied heavily on email (and IRC) for communications and clarification in the early development of the course. From that feedback, Merlin learned where students had the most difficulty and rewrote or added new material to the hypertextbook. Now, many years later, Principles of Alchemy has evolved into a complete self-learning Chemistry course - tried and tested by students of a variety of ages and backgrounds.

X-Rays, Detonation, and Dead-Zones
The upper figure illustrates the experiment assembly. The lower figure is a radiograph taken during the experiment showing the dead-zone above the booster section where detonation fails. The Energetic Materials Center has developed a new capability to study the propagation of detonations in complex geometries using flash radiography. This capability is particularly important for understanding the performance of insensitive high explosives commonly used in modern nuclear weapons. We have performed a series of experiments using LX-17, an insensitive TATB-based high-explosive, designed to produce a detonation front that turns a corner away from the direct influence of the initiating impulse. These data were taken with a unique high-flux radiography system built by CMS to diagnose the characteristics of detonations. The figures illustrate the experiment assembly and a radiograph taken during detonation. In the experiments, a detonation is initiated in the TATB hemispherical booster, which is designed to deliver a uniform hemispherical shock to the LX-17 main charge. Because the detonator and booster are inset into the main charge, the detonation front in the main charge must turn away from the booster in order to propagate into the annular region of LX-17 that lies above the booster. The Carnegie Foundation, as part of the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID), has commissioned essays to stimulate and inspire informed discussion within each discipline and field about the purpose and structure of doctoral education. We have commissioned two or three essays in each field. The essays are intended to help set the conceptual foundation of the project as well as to engender conversation. They are a starting point, not the last word, in the disciplinary discussions. We do not expect everyone to agree with the views they express, nor does the Foundation endorse every proposal. We have used these essays as the focus of discussions within CID Partner and Allied departments , and invite other departments to use them as well. We invite and encourage response from members of the discipline.

GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAMS IN CLINICAL CHEMISTRY The Commission on Accreditation is an independent non-profit organization that accredits training programs in clinical chemistry at the masters, doctoral, and postdoctoral level. The purpose of granting accreditation to training programs is to foster their excellence, to provide recognition to accredited programs, and to attract qualified individuals to training centers of excellence. This process is intended to assure the trainee that the standards of education and training are consistent with the progress in medicine and clinical laboratory sciences. To insure that these basic standards are met, each accredited program undergoes a rigorous examination of its curriculum, faculty, and institutional support, as facilitated by the preparation of a self-study document by the program director. In addition, each program is site-visited by Commissioners every five years. Graduates of accredited programs are permitted to take either the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (doctoral level) or the National Registry in Clinical Chemistry (masters level) examination prior to meeting experience requirements.

The Shodor Education Foundation announces the creation of The National Computational Science Institute (NCSI). NCSI expands the already popular regional workshops known as the Shodor Computational Science Institute (SCSI). At over 18 partner sites across the country, NCSI introduces the hands-on use of computational science, numerical models, and data visualization tools across the curriculum. The National Science Foundation has awarded a three-year, $2.75M grant (Award Number: DUE-0127488) enabling NCSI to offer a national set of in-person, video-conferenced, and web-accessible workshops, seminars, and support activities. The initial target audience for NCSI are teams of faculty from predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUI's), minority serving institutions (MSI's), and community colleges whose students are either the next generation of scientists and engineers, the next generation of K-12 teachers, or both. With supplemental funding, NCSI plans to offer computational science workshops and sponsor educational activities for in-service teachers, business and government leaders, and the general public. NCSI participants then assist others on their own campuses and at neighboring institutions to introduce computational science in their own classes. NCSI proceeds along three synergistic but distinct routes that can be modeled as PULL, PUSH, and PERMEATE

Nobel Prize in Chemistry Opens Channels: Research reveals vital function of tiny pores in cell membranes
Alexandra Goho The 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, awarded Oct. 8, honors two researchers whose pioneering work on channels in cell membranes has elucidated how ions and water molecules get in and out of cells. Such protein-based channels or pores underlie much of physiology, from the firing of nerve cells in the brain to the regulation of water by the kidneys. Half of the $1.3-million prize goes to Roderick MacKinnon, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at Rockefeller University in New York. In 1998, MacKinnon became the first scientist to determine the three-dimensional structure of an ion channel. Receiving the other half of the prize is Peter Agre of the Johns Hopkins University Medical Institutions. Agre was named for his discovery in the early 1990s of water channels called aquaporins. "Everybody in this field who works on channels is elated about this award," says biochemist Christopher Miller of Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. Ion channels act like valves that regulate the flow of ions, such as potassium and sodium, across a cell's membrane. Defects in ion channels can result in myriad disorders, such as heart arrhythmia and cystic fibrosis.
