Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate
Brief Overview
The Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID) is a multi-year research and action project to support departments' efforts to more purposefully structure their doctoral programs. We will work closely with the disciplinary communities, as well as selected departments, in six fields of study. We will foster discipline-based conceptual work and design experiments in a small number of selected departments. Carnegie will collect, examine and disseminate findings from this significant discussion and related experiments. The Carnegie Foundation believes that it is timely to return to first principles, and ask "What is the purpose of doctoral education?" Taken broadly, we believe the answer to be, to educate and prepare those to whom we can entrust the vigor, quality, and integrity of the field. We call such a person a " steward of the discipline ."

West Point Vision The undergraduate mathematics curriculum has been identified as the "gate-keeper" to America's future in science and technologya "filter" that too often deflects students into non-quantitative studies. Academia should be a "caretaker" not a "gatekeeper". The NSF has recently led reforms to improve the teaching and content of mathematics at the undergraduate level. Much of this reform occurred in calculus. However, to realize the objective of transforming the "filter" into a "pump" requires a change in the culture of the entire mathematics, science, and engineering teaching communities. The purpose of Project INTERMATH is curricular and cultural reform through the development and use of student projects that integrate the curricula of mathematics and partner disciplines. However, Internet documents are not necessarily evaluated and do not need to comply with any standard. Therefore, intellectual integrity of information posted there is not always guaranteed. More recently, the Internet serves as an effective means of disseminating information about products and services of publishers and online vendors, and of research, teaching, and learning activities of academic institutions, and of government information. Careers in Cereal Chemistry
Cereal Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, and properties of cereals and the reactions or transformations they undergo. Cereals are plants such as wheat, rice, corn, barley, rye, oats, and millet, which produce grains that are the base of the world's food supply. Because of the importance of cereals as food for humans and animals, the field of cereal chemistry continues to grow as an important scientific career. Although the field may be considered highly specialized, it is actually quite diversified. This diversity becomes apparent when one reviews the many different areas that employ the skills of cereal chemists. The cereal chemist may work in basic research, examining the biochemical components of cereals, including their carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and enzymes. Some of these studies are very technical, employing sophisticated analytical techniques and instrumentation. By contrast, the cereal chemist may be employed by a food company involved in the practical aspects of food production - for example, in flour milling, baking malting, brewing, or pasta manufacturing. In the food company, the cereal chemist or technologist may be involved in product development or quality control, where his or her understanding of the production of food may be used to assess products for consistently high quality.

This site is the companion Web-based resource for the workshop offered through the National Computational Science Institute (NCSI) , funded in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF) . This page describes the course and the learning objectives. Glad you are with us! COURSE DESCRIPTION This is a 15-session course on the technologies, techniques, and tools of computational chemistry. By using the same computational tools as research computational chemists, educators will have the opportunity to study chemistry in a manner very different than traditional teaching and education in chemistry. Computational chemistry is that branch of chemistry that applies high- performance computers (supercomputers and scientific workstations) and advanced mathematical techniques to the study of complex chemistry problems. Most computational chemistry studies are concerned with the area of quantum chemistry, which uses the classic Schroedinger equation to be able to describe the chemical properties and behaviors of atoms and molecules. Students enrolled in this seminar series will be expected to devote four to five hours per week in reading, doing computer labs, and reflecting on the course material. Students should have at least three hours of access to the WWW each week. More

Who Should Own Scientific Papers?

Stephen Berry, Martin Blume, Thomas von Foerster, Alexander Fowler, Paul Ginsparg, Stephen Heller, Neil Kestner, Andrew Odlyzko, Ann Okerson, Ron Wigington, Anne Moffat P ublishing the results of scientific research was, for many years, a symbiotic interaction between researchers and publishers, because the most effective way scientists could disseminate their results was through journals, produced by professional societies and independent publishers. Electronic communication has created new ways to distribute such results and is forcing researchers and publishers to reassess the old procedures and consider new possibilities as we learn to use the Internet. Now, not only can authors easily disseminate their results, but networked readers can have cheap, fast access to more scientific literature and have it in a form that facilitates its use in their own research.

Pilot Institutional Assessment Portfolios
An Experiment in Strengthening Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes and Institutional Effectiveness
Since 1992 with the development of its Policy on Institutional Effectiveness, and the revision of its Standards for Accreditation, the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education at NEASC has attempted to encourage its member institutions to strengthen the assessment of student learning and institutional effectiveness. The Commission has tried to do this with the highest respect for the core values of our quality assurance processes, that of respecting institutional autonomy and supporting institutional diversity while encouraging institutions to improve. Within this context the Commission has worked hard to strengthen assessment in non-prescriptive and non-bureaucratic ways. However the pressure to increase the quality of assessment of student learning and institutional effectiveness from both internal to institution forces and external constituency demands continues. The Commission would like to enhance and clarify its expectations in this arena.
With grant support from the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Davis Educational Foundation, the Commission would like to work with ten institutions to pilot the development of institutional assessment portfolios as a vehicle for strengthening and making public what institutions are accomplishing in the assessment arena. In this case, making public means resolving what institutions will present in terms assessment processes and outcomes to:
