An International Leader in Engineering Education The Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT has been built on innovations in theory and practice, unique instructional programs, an abiding concern with the needs of industry, and the very definition of chemical engineering. Our work is inspired by the example of those individuals who founded chemical engineering as an academic curriculum at MIT and then developed the tools that would distinguish and advance the profession. The Beginning
The first chemical engineering curriculum was offered by Lewis M. Norton as a new Course of study within the Department of Chemistry at MIT in 1888. Norton's Course combined mechanical engineering with industrial chemistry. As the course catalogue of 1888 described it, this curriculum was being forged "to meet the needs of students who desire a general training in mechanical engineering, and at the same time to devote a portion of their time to the study of the applications of chemistry to the arts, especially to those engineering problems which relate to the use and manufacture of chemical products." In 1891, the Department granted seven Bachelor's degrees in the new Course, accompanying eleven in the traditional chemistry curriculum. After Norton's death in 1893, Frank H. Thorpe led the Course through a continued rise in popularity. Thorpe's Outlines of Industrial Chemistry was published in 1898.

INTRODUCTION TO CHEM 107: CHEMISTRY AND ART.
The theme for this introductory chemistry course for non-science majors is the intersection of chemistry with the visual arts. We will discuss some of the basic principles of chemistry and look at a few applications of those principles as we try to understand the physical nature of paper, paints, pigments, printing, pottery. and photography. I want to place a premium on both learning and having fun with what we are learning. To better enjoy and appreciate the applications that we are discussing, we will work on several projects during the semester. Visitors to this page who are not taking the course should realize that the information here is primarily intended for the students in the course. Downloading some of these pages from remote sites may be tediously long.

History of Physical Chemistry
The interest of our studies on history of physical chemistry is focused on the history of early experiments or concepts of self-organization. Such early traces, beginning in the first decades of the 19th century, were in parts continued up to now. They were coined by prominent names like Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge Raphael Eduard Liesegang , and Wilhelm Ostwald . A main role was played by the founder of the physical chemistry in Germany, Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1932), who 100 years ago dedicated some papers and essays to questions of time and irreversibility, electrochemical oscillations, nucleation, periodic precipitation (Liesegang rings), and general philosophical reflections. Our publications on that field (in German) are mostly found in the Jahrbuch "Selbstorganisation" (Yearbook for Self-Organization).

The Chemical Tree: A History of Chemistry > Customer Review #1: Very good history book

In short: This is the most engaging book of history of chemistry that I have ever read. It is technical sometimes, but if you have a good high school chemistry it will be OK.
The Chemical Tree: A History of Chemistry > Customer Review #2: Good and interesting, but vastly overrated by the reviewers With this said, I did find the book interesting and informative enough to read it in its entirety. I was particularly ignorant of the history of chemical education before reading it. The disappointment that Ive expressed here lies in its promise-I consider it a good first draft. But I wonder, where was the editor? The Chemical Tree
A History of Chemistry From alchemy to industry, a synthetic history of chemistry through the ages.
In this authoritative volume, a New York Times Notable Book of 1993, scientific researcher and historian William Brock recounts the astonishing rise of a sophisticated science. Tracing the roots of chemistry back to the alchemists' futile attempts to turn lead into gold, he follows the emergence of the modern study of chemistry through the works of Boyle, Lavoisier, and Dalton, and the twentieth-century breakthroughs of Linus Pauling and others. This timely, comprehensive history examines the shifting conceptions of chemistry over the past centuriesfrom its development as a scientific philosophy to, more recently, its practical applications in the commercial, industrial arena. Links for Chemists is an index of over 8,000 Chemistry resources maintained at the University of Liverpool Department of Chemistry . The index features a collaborative effort to index University Chemistry Department websites, we provide the links to UK University Chemistry Department websites. For the industrial chemist we have a listing of well over 2000 Chemical Company websites and thousands of other useful chemical resources such as links to Chemistry journals and chemical society (ies). For the chemist in full time education there are pointers to hundreds of resources on atom (s), molecule (s), the periodic table of the elements and organic reaction mechanisms, these are also useful for educators In addition to links for the Chemist working in the traditional analytical, inorganic physical, organic and theoretical chemistry links, the index points to reference sites for those involved in related fields such as the pharmaceutical or petrochemical industries. There are also resources such as MSDS and safety sites which will be useful to workers in practically all industries. Coffee contains small amounts of a polyphenol compound called chlorogenic acid . This compound, long known as an antioxidant, also slows the release of glucose into the bloodstream after a meal. Caffeine counteracts this effect, so diabetics are better off drinking decaf. This molecule was suggested by Janet Raloff.

WELCOME TO
Thanks for visiting! Right now you're on CHEM4KIDS.COM . As we all start the 2003-2004 school year, Chem4Kids is staying a free site while our subscription site, KAPILI.COM , is exploding with new content. If you are looking for chemistry basics, stay on this site. If you are looking for tutorials and activities for biology, chemistry, earth sciences, and physics then you should take a look at Kapili. The members of Kapili have access to all of that information and they get to be a part of any new content we build.
At the bottom of each page, you will find links to the new site that covers chemistry, biology, geography, and physics. If you surf the site and get lost in all of the information, use the search function on the left side of the pages.
OKAY! Let's start here...
So you're asking, what is CHEMISTRY ? Well... Here's our best definition. Chemistry is the study of MATTER and the changes that take place with that matter.
Don't ask us why that matters. It just does. A lot. Everything on Earth, everything in our solar system, everything in our galaxy, and everything in the universe is made up of matter. Matter is the name scientists have given to everything that you can touch, or see, or feel, or smell. Go take a look!

Welcome to our Our goal is to bring you a history of chemical engineering that encompasses its conceptual origins in Great Britain , subsequent struggle for survival in the United States , and concludes with a cornucopia of contributions made in this Century. Along the way, many tables and figures help illustrate the growth and change in the chemical industry , the chemical engineering profession , and its educational infrastructure Some questions we hope to examine include What is chemical engineering How, and why, did chemical engineering develop What obstacles did the profession face and overcome What contributions have chemical engineers made How has the profession grown and changed over the last Century While the following documents cover a fair amount of ground, it is important to keep in mind that this is only a brief tour of this topic which leaves many important events untouched . If you find our short history interesting and informative we hope you will continue to explore the subject , as there are many excellent sources available . In any case, we hope to hear your
