With so many new terms, theories, concepts and calculations, it is little surprise that many students find themselves struggling through the General Chemistry classes, regardless of their previous educational achievements. These classes are the foundation building blocks to the whole field of physical sciences, and a poor grasp of the course contents of General Chemistry I and II will only lead to much deeper problems in later years, especially in Organic, Inorganic, Physical and Analytical Chemistry classes. Organic Chemistry is an entire field of chemistry to itself. With so many reaction pathways and nomenclatures to understand and commit to memory, these courses require dedicated study to succeed. Learn structures, functional groups and syntheses with assistance from a knowledgeable source who's been there and taken the classes.

A message from the Chair, Professor P J Derrick:
Graded 5 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the Chemistry Department is centrally located in purpose-built, refurbished laboratories housing state-of-the-art equipment for synthesis, analysis, NMR and mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, electrochemistry, laser spectroscopy and computation. These facilities provide an ideal environment for both undergraduate study and postgraduate research. With an intake of around 90 undergraduate students each year, the Department provides a high quality learning environment structured around innovative degree courses where students can explore current advances in Chemistry while developing their practical skills. Visiting lecturers from academia and from industry provide direct input to the courses and all students can undertake a piece of original research. Our Chemistry graduates pursue varied careers spanning postgraduate research, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and many other professions.

I'm now at the University of Chicago, in the Ph.D. program in chemistry. My time is now occupied mainly with my classes, teaching classes, and research; there's not much left over. In any case, the site will remain, in its present form, as long as tripod is willing to host it for free. There's one new link that I've added this update, for ChemSketch, a program for drawing chemical structures. Erik Jan 26, 2002

If it hadn't been for my abysmal lack of ability in math, I probably would've become a scientist instead of a Romantic Lit major. As to what kind of science, I never had the opportunity to discover my alter milieu - I love several fields of hard science and several of (what are considered by some) the "softer" sciences. I have now broken these links down by category. Because of the inter-disciplinary nature of so much in the sciences these days, I thought it better to list some links in more than just one category. If you think any other link(s) belong in a different category, or definitely should be in more than one, please send me e-mail. I'd also like to know if you are aware of other good Science links I have missed. Thank you.

The Chemistry of the Halogens The Halogens The Halogens in their Elemental Form Methods of Preparing the Halogens from their Halides Common Oxidation Numbers for the Halogens ... Oxyacids of the Halogens and Their Salts The Halogens There are six elements in Group VIIA, the next-to-last column of the periodic table. As expected, these elements have certain properties in common. They all form diatomic molecules (H , F , Cl , Br , I , and At ), for example, and they all form negatively charged ions (H , F , Cl , Br , I , and At When the chemistry of these elements is discussed, hydrogen is separated from the others and astatine is ignored because it is radioactive. (The most stable isotopes of astatine have half-lives of less than a minute. As a result, the largest samples of astatine compounds studied to date have been less than 50 ng.) Discussions of the chemistry of the elements in Group VIIA therefore focus on four elements: fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine. These elements are called the halogens (from the Greek hals , "salt," and

Academic Programmes: Chemistry - General Chemistry - General Chemistry 2004 Chemical Technology Chemical Technology 2004 Why Study Chemistry Chemistry is fundamental. We live in a material world made up of molecules and atoms . It is the role of the chemist to study this world, to find out what the world is made of and how the world works. It is also the role of the Chemist to find ways of making our world a better place to live in. Chemistry is one of the central sciences . Chemistry concerns itself with the composition of matter and how matter can be changed form one form to another. As such, Chemistry has a role in many other sciences. Modern botanists make use of Organic Chemistry when studying how plants behave; a soil scientist won't get very far unless she has some knowledge of Chemistry; even microbiologists and animal scientists need to make use of Chemistry at times. Chemistry is wide-ranging. As a Chemist, you may find yourself specializing in one of many different disciplines. Perhaps you've heard of Inorganic Chemistry ? As an Inorganic Chemist you might find yourself at the forefront of materials research (for example with De Beers/Element Six), on the other hand you might be involved in studying the processes of life itself (we're not made up solely of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen; there is a lot of Inorganic Chemistry in our bodies as well!). Of course, you might become an
