C. Muir and H. Reichgelt, Department of Computer Science and Mathematics, UWI, Mona, Kgn7 JAMAICA In 1988, the Department purchased a diskless Perkin Elmer 1605 FTIR. To help in the process of being able to store the IR spectra recorded, two programs were written. The first to capture the files via the serial port (RS-232) and the second to display the data. For information on the first program, FTtoPC, and other DOS utilities to convert files obtained from various instruments to JCAMP-DX format, see our JCAMP-DX utility page The original display program has now been totally rewritten and the code licensed to MDL for incorporation into their plugin CHIME. A Service pack for Version 2.6 was released in October 2001 and is available from the MDL web site. We continue to be involved in upgrades to the CHIME plugin and the last release (SP4) was September 2002. In some of the demonstration and examples we show the use of links between spectra and molecular graphics display such that clicking on peaks in a Mass Spectrum will highlight the relevant FRAGMENTS in the molecule, clicking on peaks in the IR spectrum will highlight the relevant BONDS or animate the vibrational mode and clicking on peaks in the NMR will highlight the appropriate protons or carbon atoms. CASTNET data are provided as ASCII comma-separated value (CSV) files compressed using PKZIP format. Documentation describing the content, format and codes of the data file is included in the compressed ZIP file. The LAST_DATE column indicates the maximum sample date included in the file. However, because sites are calibrated on a staggered 6-month cycle, not all sites have a data record extending to the LAST_DATE indicated. This review is to determine if the sample is contaminated and, therefore, should not be used in the calculation of average concentrations and deposition rates. Conditions such as finding the wet-side bucket uncovered during a non-precipitation event or deterioration of the polyethylene cover on the hyetometer cover gaskets, are sufficient reasons to automatically invalidate the sample. In other instances, the engineer must use his engineering judgement to decide if the sample is contaminated and invalid. This judgement is based on information from the check sheets, operator comments, and additional knowledge concerning the site, its equipment and operation. After review, individual sample results are entered into a computer where all of the data is sorted and the necessary calculations are performed. Prior to beginning the report generation procedures, the database is reviewed again by the engineering staff. Programs have been prepared to create a combined results database and to select results from the correct calendar year. The information is converted into a spreadsheet format.

    Ozone and the Atmosphere
Earth is an extraordinary planet. Complex interactions between the land, oceans, and atmosphere created conditions that are favorable for life. One species, man, has managed to alter the environment on a global scale. In order to fully comprehend the impact of our actions, we must view the planet as a whole and understand the relationship between its basic components; land, water, and air. This web site discusses the chemical composition and evolution of Earth's atmosphere, focusing on the protective layer of ozone in the stratosphere. The destructive properties of tropospheric ozone are also presented. Diagrams and animation sequences are used to visually depict the delicate structure of the ozone molecule and the chemical reactions involved in its formation and destruction. Ozone destroying pollutants were first identified in 1973. Since that time there has been a considerable amount of controversy surrounding the subject of ozone depletion. More than 20 years of ozone-related scientific studies, international meetings, and global industrial agreements are summarized in the last section of this site.
