Message from the Chairman On behalf of the Chemistry Department, I am pleased to welcome you to this web site. We are proud that this is one of only three departments of chemistry in the state to be accredited by the American Chemical Society this is the only such program exclusively for undergraduates. Our department is undergoing significant changes to provide an even better environment for the study of chemistry. The curriculum has been modified over the last three years and new faculty are being hired. Numerous new instruments have been purchased. These include a Varian Gemini 2000 300MHz NMR, a Hewlett-Packard GC/MS and a Perkin-Elmer 100 AA. An FTIR, several UV/VIS spectrophotometers, HPLC and GC instruments are also available. This makes student research much more meaningful and greatly expands the possible research alternatives. Certainly, there is something for everyone here. This is truly a dynamic time to be affiliated with WVSC. In addition to the mountains of this area, the Kanawha River is closeby. Outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and skiing are readily available. In addition, Charleston is only 5 miles away so that one has the benefits of a large population cente r as well.

Academics Chemistry Chemistry Mission Statement The mission of the Chemistry Department is to provide a strong chemistry foundation for students majoring in chemistry and for students pursuing a career in professional fields requiring some chemistry knowledge. The department is also committed to the liberal arts concept of providing a broad background of knowledge and encouraging students to learn about all areas of study. Why major in Chemisty? A chemistry major offers a wide variety of career opportunities. The chemical industry offers opportunities in research, quality control, and management. Research can also be carried out in an academic setting. Teaching, particularly at the secondary or college level, is another career avenue.
There is also demand for chemists in other areas that may be less obvious. For instance, the National Gallery of Art has a team of chemists responsible for analyzing works of art for art historical and conservation purposes. Many chemists have also taken their degrees and gone into the legal profession, particularly patent law. Forensic scientists use chemistry to aid law enforcement in solving crimes. Some chemists also go into government work as advisers and inspectors. A chemistry degree can also be of value for anyone interested in science journalism.
