The programs complement each other, producing Food Science majors with an exceptionally strong background in chemistry and providing Chemistry majors with the opportunity to take electives in more applied areas such as food chemistry, food engineering, and food analysis. Undergraduate research opportunities are also enhanced by the combination of these program areas. One of the three chemistry concentrations is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS); the other chemistry concentrations may be taken along with a Secondary Education minor. Preprofessional Program A preprofessional curriculum for pre-medical, pre-dental, and pre-veterinary studies is also offered in cooperation with the Biology Department (see page 32 of College catalog).

Chemistry
Chemistry is the science that examines and works toward understanding changes in matter. Chemistry has been described as the central science because matter includes the entire physical world, such as the things we use, the food we eat, and even ourselves. Correlating the insights of chemistry with physics, mathematics, and molecular biology opens vistas that excite and offer opportunities to better the entire world. Chemists as scientists must be knowledgeable in fact and theory for solving scientific problems and also capable of providing a public understanding of their work, including potential problems as well as benefits. Chemists as people must be broadly educated in order to understand themselves and their society. The liberal arts as offered in the general education curriculum is imperative if a chemist is to be both truly human and truly scientific. The department is on the list of approved schools of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and offers a chemistry major that meets the chemistry background required by many fields.

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry Message from the Chairman, Dr. Harold Pinnick: On behalf of the Chemistry Department, I am pleased to welcome you to this web site. We are proud that this is one of only three departments of chemistry in the state to be accredited by the American Chemical Society this is the only such program exclusively for undergraduates. Our department is undergoing significant changes to provide an even better environment for the study of chemistry. The curriculum has been modified over the last three years and new faculty are being hired. Numerous new instruments have been purchased. These include a Varian Gemini 2000 300MHz NMR, a Hewlett-Packard GC/MS and a Perkin-Elmer 100 AA. An FTIR, several UV/VIS spectrophotometers, HPLC and GC instruments are also available. This makes student research much more meaningful and greatly expands the possible research alternatives. Certainly, there is something for everyone here. This is truly a dynamic time to be affiliated with WVSC. In addition to the mountains of this area, the Kanawha River is closeby. Outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and skiing are readily available. In addition, Charleston is only 5 miles away so that one has the benefits of a large population cente r as well.

  • Will the Universe expand forever? Is there life on other planets? How are stars formed? These are some of the questions being addressed by students majoring in Astronomy. Some areas of study in astronomy include the sun, the solar system, the stars, the Milky Way, galaxies, and cosmology. SDSU is the only institution in the California State University System that offers a complete academic program in astronomy. Students participate in all phases of observational astronomical research. Much of this work is done at the Mount Laguna Observatory, operated by the University.
Department of Biology
  • The Department of Biology offers a dynamic an modern program in biology which prepares students both academically and practically for vocations in science and science-related fields, or for entry into graduate studies. The major is designed to present a basic background in modern biology and in the supportive disciplines of chemistry, mathematics, and physics, and to provide specialized training selected by the student from a variety of areas.

The Chemistry program provides a student with a sound and comprehensive grasp of the principles of chemistry, including laboratory experience necessary for basic research, teaching, and industrial research and development. The sequence of courses builds to the junior year when each student is expected to participate in a research program, although qualified students may begin research projects as early as their first year. The department also offers 30-40 student research stipends to qualified students each summer. Return to the Sciences Last updated:
