Florence Emeline Wall Born: Major discipline: Chemistry Died: Minor discipline: Chemical Analysis
Very little is known about Florence Wall's early life. She was born about 1893 in Paterson, New Jersey. She graduated in 1913 from St. Elizabeth College with a B.A. in chemistry and B.Ed. in education. Her first job was teaching high school science. During World War I she began her long career in industry. Wall carried out chemical analyses on ore samples at the Radium Luminous Material Corporation in Orange, NJ. Suffering from exhaustion due to overwork and possibly contact with radium, she quit in less than a year. She began a new job at Seydel Manufacturing Company where she worked on benzoic acid derivatives. Because of the high quality of her work, Florence Wall was offered a position to run the large-scale production at the Fellows Company. The company closed at the end of the war. Wall moved to the Ricketts Laboratory where she was again doing analytical work and then on to the U.S. Motor Fuel Corporation to investigate a new catalyst for cracking hydrocarbons. When she discovered that the claims were fraudulent and recommended the investigations be stopped, she, of course, lost her job. Wall spent the next two years teaching chemistry in Havana, Cuba.

Mary Lura Sherrill Born: Major discipline: Organic Chemistry Died: Minor discipline: Spectroscopy
Mary Sherrill was a member of the collaborative research group formed among the chemistry faculty at Mt. Holyoke College by Emma Perry Carr. The group's goal was to obtain spectroscopic data on a variety of organic compounds. Sherrill's expertise was the synthesis and purification of these compounds. Mary Lura Sherrill was born on July 14, 1888 in Salisbury, North Carolina to Sarah Rosanna Bost and Miles Osborne Sherrill. Not much is known about her early life and schooling. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1909 where she had earned an A.B. degree with an emphasis in chemistry. She was an instructor of chemistry there until 1914, during which time she also had earned an A.M. degree in physics (in 1911). Sherrill attributed her choice of chemistry as a career to her chemistry instructor, Fernando Wood Martin. Sherrill decided to enroll in the Ph.D. program in chemistry at the University of Chicago in 1914, where she worked under Julius Stieglitz. She maintained her connection with Randolph-Macon, either as an instructor or as an adjunct professor until 1918. Her doctoral research focused on the synthesis of barbiturates and esters of methylenedisalicylic acid. In 1918 Sherrill accepted a position as associate professor of chemistry at the North Carolina State Normal and Industrial Institute. She remained there two years while she continued her doctoral research.

The world, and Whitney Houston fans in particular, have eagerly awaited the long-promised Greatest Hits collection which was released in mid-May. Several suggested track-listings had appeared at internet music sites but the album contains all the favourite ballads in their original versions on the first CD called Cool Down, and new and old remixes of the uptempo songs on the second CD Throw Down. Three new duets are also included and a previously unreleased song Fine . The first single in the US is Could I Have This Kiss Forever with latin star, and son of Julio, Enrique Iglesias. It's a smooth and lush ballad. Internationally the album is trumpeted by a duet with George Michael, If I Told You That which features some of the funkiest piano you will ever hear. The third duet is Same Script, Different Cast with Deborah Cox, a song that wouldn't sound out of place in a musical. Any Whitney Houston fan big or small will love the collection. My only criticism is that as a lover of Whitney's faster tracks the ballad CD is a little long for me. The album debuted straight at no 1 in the UK album charts beating teen queen Britney Spears' latest by one place.
