How does one go about registering and importing foreign agricultural chemicals?
Answer
In the case of importing and selling foreign agricultural chemicals, the relevant agricultural chemicals should be registered by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries by presenting test results on chemical efficacy, phytotoxicity, toxicity and residual properties of the agricultural chemicals. A registration number of agricultural chemicals to be imported should be notified to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
(Agricultural Chemicals Regulation Law)

2. If the safety of the relevant agricultural chemicals is confirmed by the results of inspection conducted by Agricultural Chemicals Inspection Station, registration from the Minister of Agricultural, Forestry and Fisheries can be obtained. 3. Incidentally, any person engaged in overseas manufacture, processing or selling agricultural chemicals destined for export to Japan may also secure registration for the chemicals from the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Any person who intends to obtain such registration should appoint an "in-country caretaker" who resides in Japan at the time of applying for a registration. 4. Any importer of agricultural chemicals that have obtained the registration mentioned in 2. should notify registration number of the relevant agricultural chemicals to be imported, name and address of the importer to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

window.name = "parentwindow"; English Sitemap Feedback Home ... Taking full advantages from by-products Agriculture Formic acid can be used in many agricultural applications. The two main properties that make formic acid superior to other acids are: 1) formic acid is the strongest organic acid, and 2) its strong antimicrobial effect. Formic acid is a natural constituent in the metabolism of animals and is oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. Kemira's ammoniated formic acid products have lower corrosivity and less vapour pressure than those of formic acid. These products are user friendly products, and Kemira is the only producer of water-free ammoniated formic acid products. Since the early 1960's, formic acid has been used for preservation of forage crops, such as grass, maize and legumes.
The same principles of ensiling are applied to the anaerobic preservation of moist grain and pulses.
Several by-products from the food industry contain valuable nutrients for animals. It is often necessary to preserve these by-products before feeding to animals or mixing with other feeds. Formic acid and ammoniated formic acid products are the ideal preservatives also for this purpose.
In the 1970's it was found that pigs benefit from the addition of formic acid to their diets. Formic acid and ammoniated formic acid products enhance growth performance of swine and poultry by improving digestion and absorption of nutrients and by reducing pathogens in the gastrointestinal system of the animals.

BIO. "What is Biotechnology?" Washington, D.C.: Biotechnology Industry Organization. Techniques aimed at crop improvement have been utilized for centuries. Today, applied plant science has three overall goals: increased crop yield, improved crop quality, and reduced production costs. Biotechnology is proving its value in meeting these goals. Progress has, however, been slower than with medical and other areas of research. Because plants are genetically and physiologically more complex than single-cell organisms such as bacteria and yeasts, the necessary technologies are developing more slowly.
Improvements in Crop Yield and Quality
In one active area of plant research, scientists are exploring ways to use genetic modification to confer desirable characteristics on food crops. Similarly, agronomists are looking for ways to harden plants against adverse environmental conditions such as soil salinity, drought, alkaline earth metals, and anaerobic (lacking air) soil conditions. Genetic engineering methods to improve fruit and vegetable crop characteristics - such as taste, texture, size, color, acidity or sweetness, and ripening process, are being explored as a potentially superior strategy to the traditional method of cross-breeding.

Baker Petrolite Crop Performance Chemicals can increase irrigation efficiency by controlling submersed aquatic weeds and algae in flowing and impounded irrigation systems. This vegetation reduces the carrying capacity of canals by clogging turnouts and pumps. Submersed weeds also increase the likelihood of canal overflow and levee breaks, plus accelerate accumulation of silt and debris. MAGNACIDE® H Herbicide, marketed exclusively by Baker Petrolite’s Crop Protection Chemicals Division, has been successfully used in irrigation systems around the world since 1959. Following an application, submersed aquatic weeds disintegrate eliminating the need to dispose of the dead weeds and quickly returning the system to its maximum capacity and efficiency.

Sales tax urged on agricultural chemicals
Farmers in 29 states are exempt from paying sales tax on agricultural chemicals. July 13, 1999

Web posted at: 5:48 p.m. EDT (2148 GMT)

Friends of the Earth and an alliance of environmental, farm and consumer groups are requesting that officials in 29 states impose a sales tax on agricultural chemicals such as pesticides and insecticides. About $674 million is lost each year because of the exemptions, according to a recent report endorsed by the alliance members. That money, they say, should be used for sustainable agriculture, family farms and conservation education. The alliance includes the Alabama Rivers Alliance, Environmental League of Massachusetts, Florida Certified Organic Growers and Consumers (Florida Organic Growers), Hoosier Environmental Council of Indiana, Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group, Safer Pest Control Project of Illinois and the Vermont Public Interest Research Group. "Our strategy is getting the exemptions removed on the chemicals and earmarking the funds for sustainable agriculture and other programs that would support family farmers," said Valerie Frances, author of the report.

Increased use of chemicals in agriculture worldwide seen as major environmental threat Agriculture will be a major driver of global environmental change over the next 50 years, rivaling the effect of greenhouse gases in its impact, according to a new study published in this week's journal Science.
"The global impact of agriculture will be at least as great as climate change," said lead author David Tilman, visiting researcher at the National Center for Environmental Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara. "We have to find wiser ways to farm."
As an NCEAS working group, the co-authors spent eight months gathering all the data they could find on the global impact of humans mediated by anything except climate change. Agriculture turned out to be the largest.
World population, expected to be 9 billion (double the present population) by the year 2050, will require the conversion of natural ecosystems covering an area larger than the size of the United States including Alaska, as demand for food doubles. This expansion of agricultural land is expected to occur mostly in Latin America and
sub-Saharan central Africa. The authors also explain that additional natural habitat would be lost to urban and suburban development.

AGRICULTURAL CHEMICALS, FARMERS, AND THE LAW IN NSW 25 years of the Riverina Outlook Conference, Wagga Wagga 1973-1998 AGRICULTURAL CHEMICALS, FARMERS, AND THE LAW IN NSW Hugh Fisher Inspector, Pesticides Act
    Introduction
Now in force in NSW is the Pesticides Act (1978). Its stated objective is to control the sale, supply, use and possession of pesticides and to prevent certain foodstuffs with unacceptable pesticide residues from becoming available for consumption. The Act replaces legislation that was inadequate to cope with the massive increase in the use of agricultural chemicals and the changing technology in agriculture. Most of the substances known collectively as pesticides can harm man, both in the formulated form, and as deposited residues (above statutory limits) in the crops they are designed to protect. Pesticides misused can also damage the environment. The new Act has legally defined "pesticide" to include such things as plant growth regulators, repellents, lures, algacides, and other things not previously defined as pesticides.
    Registration
Prior to being sold and used, a pesticide must be registered. As well as the chemical itself being registered, the label and the container must be registered also.
