LSU's consistently ranks among the top 20 in undergraduate enrollment and degrees. The department ranks among the top 30 chemical engineering programs in external funding. Proximity and access to one of the world's largest concentrations of chemical and refining facilities give LSU remarkable opportunities for research and teaching. Louisiana and the Gulf Coast region lead the nation in growth of the chemical and petroleum industries. The $15 million Cain endowment is earmarked for distinguished senior scholars who will hold five multimillion dollar endowed chairs, for five junior professorships for rising stars, and for undergraduate laboratories. The department has built the Hazardous Substance Research Center/South and Southwest into one of the premier environmental research institutions in the U.S., attracting more than $15 million in external funding from a variety of federal and industrial sources.

Miniscript #139 - Chemical Engineer
Chemical Engineers work with chemical, biochemical and physical changes in the composition of matter. They design chemical plant equipment and devise processes for use in the manufacture of chemicals and related products such as gasoline, synthetic rubber, plastics, composite materials, detergents, cement and paper. Please Read: This website is a sample of the MOIS products. MOIS provides career information to students and adults through a wide variety of products, including Your Careeer and College Guideway CD-ROM and myDreamExplorer website. The career information on this (www.mois.org) website is only a fraction of what's available in our products. Your Career and College Guideway CD-ROM includes many self-assessments, job profiles, resume information, EDP, tranition planning, Internet resources, reference materials, plus much more! If you want to experience the full benefit of the MOIS products, please see your career advisor and find out where MOIS is available in your school or community. Chemical Engineering Curriculum
The mission of the Department of Chemical Engineering is to educate students for professional careers, to advance knowledge, to develop competent professionals, and to make further positive contributions both in the field of chemical engineering and to society in general. The department embraces ABET 2000 program objectives with a highly-structured educational experience that develops learning skills, fosters an appreciation of the need for lifetime learning, provides experiences to function independently and as a team member, to communicate ideas effectively by oral and written presentation, and motivates students to become responsible, knowledgeable, and responsive members of their community. Of special importance to chemical engineers are the abilities:
  • to apply knowledge of mathematics and basic sciences to chemical engineering practice, to formulate and solve chemical engineering problems, to design and conduct laboratory experiments and chemical processes.

Centennial Celebration Rousing Success The Department of Chemical Engineering celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding with a two day celebration on Wednesday, October 29 and Thursday, October 30, 2003.
By all measures, the event was a rousing success, with more than 125 participants, of which 75 were Chemical Engineering alumni. John J. Williams BS in ChE ’34, MS '36, PhD '38 was the oldest alumnus to participate; Stefan Dainard a current applicant for Lehigh ChE class of 2008, the youngest. Every decade since the 1930’s was represented.
The celebration began on Wednesday afternoon with a wine and cheese reception in the Tower Room of Iacocca Hall, the current home of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Previous homes included Chandler-Ullman Hall (1903 – 1968) and Whitaker Laboratory (1968 – 1987). Click here for a brief history of Chemical Engineering. Click here to see a photo essay of these buildings. During and after the reception, participants viewed posters that described the department’s ongoing research efforts. Those posters addressed:

Magic Rocks 'Ah-Ha' Moment
Remember that Mac Hall cartoon concerning science fair judging? A reader kindly wrote to clue me in about magic rocks, which I knew years ago as 'crystal garden'. I can't believe I had forgotten! Magic rocks are the cool 'rocks' that you put into a small aquarium (precluding its use for fish ever again). You add the solution and the rocks sprout into stalagmites/stalactites or fairy castle forms of every color. I haven't seen magic rocks in stores, but a quick online search proved that they are still around, carried by stores such as
