Chemical Engineering Co-op
Bachelor of Engineering
THE FIELD
Combining chemical expertise with knowledge of advanced manufacturing technologies, chemical engineers create new processes, materials, or energy sources to achieve such things as faster silicon chips, better tasting food, cleaner water, improved solid waste treatment, new pharmaceuticals, and longer-lasting batteries. THE PROGRAM
The program is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. You are eligible for PEng status after graduation and experience requirement. THEORY
First-year studies include chemistry, computer science, math, physics, and engineering basics. By the end of second year you will have learned about thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, instrumental methods of analysis, process measurement techniques, organic chemistry, technical communications, electrical circuits, and mathematics. After a co-op placement at the end of your fourth semester (see details below) you continue with studies that include heat transfer, materials, mass transfer, statistical design, computations, and reaction kinetics. In fifth and sixth semesters you study such advanced subjects as separation processes, chemical reactor engineering, process modeling and simulation, and chemical engineering economics. In your final two semesters, you complete a project thesis, work on a group project in plant design, study process control, participate in an operations laboratory, and choose from electives that include those with an environmental, industrial, or polymers focus. Examples of projects you might work on include wastewater treatment using ozone and biological technique, milk fat removal by crystallization, plant design for production of acrylic acid (plastic) and plant for production of citric acid (food).

Spouted-bed combustion; destruction of wastes by incineration; mass transfer with chemical reaction
A native of Germany, Professor Altwicker came to Rensselaer in 1968 after ten years of industrial experience. His research involves both laboratory and modeling studies of incineration, with the objective of gaining improved understanding of the formation of products of incomplete combustion, such as dioxins, and developing strategies for their control. He also studies spouted-bed combustion of fuels so as to characterize performance parameters for improved fundamental understanding and application in waste destruction. He is a member of the Air and Waste Management Association and the American Chemical Society and has served on several EPA scientific review committees.

Information on requirements to practise
The profession of engineer is regulated in Canada. It is illegal to practise the profession of engineer or to use the title "engineer" without being licensed as a full member in a provincial or territorial association. However, individuals can do engineering work under the direct supervision of licensed engineers. Provincial and territorial associations of professional engineers are responsible for setting the standards for entry into the profession and for issuing licences to those who meet established standards of qualifications and practice. Therefore, once you know where you will settle and work in Canada, you should contact the appropriate provincial or territorial association for details on licensure procedures. Below is a

  • Employment of Chemical Engineers The Institution of Chemical Engineers The Chemical Engineering Tripos In this subject there is an undergraduate course of study followed by candidates for the Chemical Engineering Tripos , which is divided into three Parts: Part I, Part IIA, and Part IIB. Chemical engineers are concerned with the design, construction and operation of industrial processes in which changes in the composition and properties of matter take place. These changes may result from chemical reactions, biological processes, transformations of physical state, mixing or separation, size reduction or other chemical or physical operations. Chemical engineers are increasingly involved in the control, management and elimination of environmental pollution.
    Employment of Chemical Engineers
Chemical engineering, as a discipline is around a hundred years old and arose from the requirements of the oil and chemical industries; together these are currently the largest employers of chemical engineers. Activities within the oil and chemicals sector are, for example, the production and refining of petroleum, the production of tonnage plastics, fertilisers and chemicals and the production of speciality chemicals such as dyes and pharmaceuticals.
