Sioux Falls search Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) search Good News Clubs search These ministries take place in neighborhood settings such as homes, backyards, schools and community centers and are designed to teach children ages five through 12 about the gospel and moral and character development. They are not school sponsored but often use school facilities. But the school district says it would be a violation of the U.S. Constitution to permit Wigg, or any of its teachers, to lead the classes. Allowing that, the district argues, would give the impression that the school system favors a particular religion, since the teacher would be evangelizing on school property. Wigg said her employer committed discrimination by restricting what she does on her own time, and in doing so is violating her constitutional rights. In February, she filed a federal lawsuit against the district and Superintendent Jack Keegan, seeking a reversal of the Sioux Falls ban. "The school district believes this lawsuit is without merit, and we are optimistic that the district's policies and procedures, which avoid endorsing or disapproving any particular religious belief or faith, will be upheld," reads a statement sent to Fox News from the Sioux Falls Superintendent.

WHAT ENRON CAN TEACH FAMILIES ABOUT LOVE
DALLAS (SMU) Corporate wrongdoings are ethical failings in the boardroom, but the behaviors greed, lying and hubris begin in the family. If you want ethical managers, business ethicists say raise ethical children. "Running a family is a lot like running a business. The same behaviors you require of good employees, you want of good children," says Richard Mason, the Carr P. Collins Distinguished Professor at the Cox School of Business and director of the Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility. Mason, who has written on character development in particular cheating by teenagers offers these tips honed from years of teaching business ethics to undergraduate and MBA students:
  • At its basics, ethics is about love, respect and caring. Teach these traits by showing children love consistently. Ethical businesses treat their employees with respect, honor their customers' wants and needs and strive to be competent and excellent in all they do. We are all naturally self-interested. But a good family practices mutual love. Everyone is respected for who they are. So a member doesn't steal or lie or be arrogant out of respect for others. This caring and other family norms keep our shadier side in check. Teach children to control greedy impulses and to practice humility rather than hubris, behaviors that were the downfall of executives at Enron and WorldCom.

Earlier this school year, the school's speech/language pathologist, Maryln Adams, received a $500 grant from the Hamilton County Educational Service Center for "Language to Literacy through Digital Technology and Animal Assisted Therapy." Adams brings her six-year-old German shepherd, Baron, to school once a week to encourage literacy and speech development. Eleven second- and third-graders with cognitive disabilities read to the trained therapy dog, talk to him and stroke his back while others are reading. "Baron is a completely unbiased listener, and the children are more relaxed in reading and storytelling with him," Adams said. "His presence brings a calmness to the environment, and children that lack focus or are verbally aggressive to other children show overall improvement in attention and social skills."

Voices Against Violence
A new program uses storytelling to teach conflict resolution to children
By Ken Gewertz
Gazette Staff
Patrick Walker first became seriously interested in dealing with the problem of violence when he found himself living next door to a crack house.
Walker was forced to call the police repeatedly in an effort to curtail the activities of his drug-dealing neighbors, resulting in a series of nasty altercations and threats to his life. The experience acted as a catalyst, starting him thinking not only about how he could change his own situation, but about what could be done to reduce violence in general.
Walker, an assistant professor of education at University of Massachusetts, Boston, began sharing ideas with Robert Selman, a psychologist with dual appointments at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Medical School. The two met while Walker was pursuing a master's degree at Harvard Divinity School.
Walker and Selman later collaborated on the development of a school program to teach conflict resolution. Their research was supported by the Judge Baker Children's Center, a Harvard Medical School affiliate.

THE CONSERVATORY PROGRAM Walden Theatre provides developmentally appropriate theatre training that is unique in this community. Students progress at their own rate through a four-level curriculum. This demanding program requires commitment and self-discipline, but through it, students obtain an excellent foundation in theatre. Other benefits are that it helps students build self confidence, work as a team and develop a love of literature all while making lasting friendships.
CLASS LEVELS Improvisation

New students usually begin in the Improvisation Class, where they learn the basic vocabulary of the theatre through theatre games that teach them to focus, concentrate, listen, think and react. At the end of each term students perform in a showcase for family and friends, demonstrating skills that were developed in class.
  • Classes meet on Saturday mornings from 10am until 12 noon.
Studio
In the Studio Class, students are introduced to written dramatic material. The focus is on beginning character development, scene analysis and structured movement for the stage, emphasizing technique and body awareness. At this level, students are eligible to audition for Walden Theatre productions. In the spring, the class presents In Celebration of Shakespeare, a collection of scenes, sonnets, monologues and songs from Shakespeare’s writings.
  • Classes meet on Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

    Breaking Into Print
    What Length Sells Best?
    by Melisa Michaels
There's a lot of advice floating around as to how best to achieve those first sales. Some say you should write short stories to break in. Some say better yet, write short-shorts since they take less time. Some say forget the short stuff: the real market is novels. The answer that is right for you depends on your ultimate goal. If you just want to see your name in print, the quickest way might be to rob a bank. If you want to see your work in print, the quickest way might be to write for fanzines or other small magazines that pay in contributors' copies. If you want to build a career, forget quick ways. There are none. That's the bad news. The good news is, you can probably do it if you try hard enough. With a modicum of talent and a whole lot of work, you can learn your craft and begin to make those first sales.
    But What Length Will Sell?
The answer to this question is simple: what will sell to the real paying markets is the best work their editors can find that matches their editorial guidelines. Yes, they may more often have room for one more short-short than for another novella. Yes, you might therefore be able to sell three good short-shorts while remaining unable to sell one good novella. Unfortunately that does not mean it's a good idea to concentrate on short-shorts to the exclusion of novellas (or short stories, or novels)

    http://www.cortland.edu/c4n5rs/ce_iv.asp
    WHAT IS CHARACTER EDUCATION?
Character education is the deliberate effort to help people understand, care about, and act upon core ethical values. It is based on the following premises:
  • Destructive youth behaviors such as violence, dishonesty, drug abuse, and sexual promiscuity have a common core: The absence of good character.
People do not automatically develop good character. Intentional and focused efforts must be made by families, schools, faith communities, youth organizations, government, and the media to foster the character development of the young.
    Good character
consists of moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action: Understanding core ethical values, caring about them, and acting upon them. These values include respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, diligence, self-control, caring, and courage.
These core ethical values are not mere subjective preferences like taste in music or clothes. They have objective worth (they are good for us whether or not we know it), universal validity, and a claim on our personal and collective conscience. They are affirmed by religious traditions around the world and transcend religious and cultural differences. They are rooted in our human nature and express our common humanity.

  • The universal validity of these values, and our obligation to uphold them, derive from the fact that they:
