Using Stories About Heroes to teach Values. by Tony R They stress the integration of cognitive development and character development through perspective
http://www.indiana.edu/~ssdc/valdig.htm
Using Stories About Heroes to Teach Values by Tony R. Sanchez November 1998 RECENT TRENDS IN VALUES EDUCATION There has been a renewal of concern during the 1990s about teaching and learning values standards that everyone should have about what is good or bad. And leading educators have recommended stories about heroes as a main means of teaching and learning values. Teaching methods that stress only cognitive skills in the analysis and clarification of choices about values have fallen from favor. The current trend is against teaching neutrally about values. Rather, the trend is for teaching values in concert with methods of analysis and judgment that yield answers about right and wrong, better and worse concerning personal behavior and the common good (Leming 1996). Prominent educators recommend that certain widely held values or virtues should be at the core of the school curriculum for the purpose of systematically developing the character of students. They stress the integration of cognitive development and character development through "perspective-taking, moral reasoning, thoughtful decision-making, and moral self-knowledge" (Lickona 1993, 9). And they also urge the use of personal models heroes in history, fiction, and current events to exemplify and encourage emulation of particular virtues or desirable traits of character, such as honesty, civility, courage, perseverance, loyalty, self-restraint, compassion, tolerance, fairness, respect for the worth and dignity of the individual, responsibility for the common good, and so forth (Leming 1996; Lickona 1991).

Are Ladies' Night promotions a violation of equal rights?
No Yes
No. Oh for heaven's sake It is just a marketing ploy it has been going on forever give us a break...
No. There they go again, Civil Rights groups raising hell over nothing. What a bunch of crap! Men would much rather have Ladies’ Night at the bars because it just gives them more women to hit on.
Bill . / Pensacola, FL
No. Some people need to live overseas then come back to our blessed land and truly be thankful for what we have and concerned for the things that realy matter.
Bill P. / Valparaiso, FL
No. Being a bartender in several local estabishments for over 8 years..most of them also promoted men's nights also. So as far as equal rights are concerned..there's equal rights for all.
Brenda J. / Pensacola, FL
No. Ladies night out ( in for free )has ALWAYS been about: Letting woman in a bar for free, ( letting them think their special ) get drinks at a minimum, or free for a couple of hours, long enough to clout their better judgement, and then get them drunk. This is a ploy for the advantage of men. Women will be more *accessible*. It is proven that women are an easier target if they are under the influence. Sound a little crass, but so very true. I have heard years ago when this came into *vogue* from various men, that they like the idea. Quote, They can get a woman *easier* at the end of the evening. They are all for it! Just what we need, men in for free, woman in for free, free drinks or minium, and we will have a *rip roaring drunken night of hundreds of drunken people on the town, which spells disaster in many forms! Some criminal. I say and have always said, let women pay to get in as men do! That makes it equal. Now what else do they want to whine about!

1995 Character Education Projects
The California State Department of Education is in partnership with the Sacramento County Office of Education, Citizenship and Law-Related Education Center, five elementary and five middle schools in six districts to develop models of character education for California schools. This character education project utilizes a staff development approach to teach character concepts within the five elementary and five middle school test sites. In terms of outcomes, multiple measures will be used throughout the project to assure the reliability of findings. Sources of evidence to document change include: attendance, discipline, parental and community involvement, faculty and administration involvement, morale, and student staff, and parent perceptions of the impact of character education on daily activities and behavior. FY95: $250,000; FY96: $250,000;
Contact: Marleen Allin, (916) 657-4656 The New Mexico State Department of Education
Contact: Patricia Concannon, (505) 827-6525. The Utah Community Partnership for Character Development includes seven school districts, Utah State University, and the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation. The six major objectives of the program are: 1) have the community articulate a common philosophy; 2) empower school-community teams to adapt the philosophy; 3) through the SEA, implement staff development; 4) create character development instructional methodologies, learning strategies, and curriculum; 5) provide for statewide expansion of partnerships; 6) develop and implement a comprehensive evaluation plan. An outside evaluator will work in cooperation with the stakeholders to: 1) assess the model as an application to foster the desired elements of character in students; and 2) understand the factors and conditions related to ongoing development and implementation of the model so that decision makers can refine and encourage others to replicate the model.

How to Shape Your Child’s Character
Activities That Teach Character Plan a way to “live out” a character trait that you want your children to learn. It is much easier for them to grasp a concept if they see it in action. For example: Kind Words
  • Have each family member take a turn at dinnertime to say what he or she likes best about another person.
  • Ask everyone to write (or draw a picture) in a note to a friend telling how much he or she is appreciated.
  • Challenge everybody to try one day saying “please” and “thank you” in situations where it might not seem absolutely necessary.
Sharing
  • Take a meal to a neighbor, friend or family member in need. Have everyone help prepare and deliver it.
  • Box up toys and clothes that are in good condition to give to a church or other charity.
  • Share your time as a family by offering to keep a single parent’s children for a few hours or overnight.
Patience
  • Have each family member wait to buy something he really wants. See if the desire goes away.

Web posted at: 6:04 p.m. EST (2304 GMT) by Allan E. Alter (IDG) As business technologists, we've learned to be realistic about computers. As parents and school volunteers, we should be teaching educators to be realistic, too. We know the PC is just a tool, and a darned-hard-to-manage one at that. We know you can't just toss technology at problems; computers won't be effective unless behaviors change. Yet the education establishment, unaware of what we've learned, treats the PC as a savior. The Clinton administration is spending close to $2.5 billion to connect schools to the Internet and help them buy computers and software. MORE COMPUTING INTELLIGENCE IDG.net home page

Reading is a wholesome activity. Reading is good. Reading is fundamental. Reading is the foundation for a literate, democratic society. Reading is the cornerstone of learning. Ethics in the K-12 Classroom
Success in the K-12 classroom is not only teaching math, language, history, and science. Teachers supplement - sometimes replace - family and community in developing individuals truly prepared to live and work in our complex, changing, and demanding world. Today, life requires building relationships with family, friends, co-workers and even complete strangers. We find that the most successful relationships are based on trust and consistent ethical behavior, where ethics becomes the language of the relationship. Developing the complete person requires both academic instruction and character education. As a mentor, counselor, role model, and friend, you have the challenge of teaching your students to do the right thing. Character education can help you perform this ever-expanding and demanding role.

Roger Babson How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday in your life, you will have been all of these. George Washington Carver How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. Anne Frank Today, the vast majority of Americans share a respect for fundamental traits of character: honesty, compassion, justice, courage, and perseverance. Yet, in today's world, all children face great uncertainties in a complex and sometimes troubled society. These traits are not always readily apparent and easy to grasp or learn. Therefore our challenge is to provide youth with the self-esteem, stamina, and support they need to survive, be successful, and develop into strong, competent, caring, and responsible citizens.

Print version: page 22 What is character? "It's simply nothing more than teaching youngsters and, for that matter, ultimately adults to do the right thing when no one is looking, when you don't need to, when there is no reward for doing the right thing," said Secretary of State Colin Powell at the June 19 White House Conference on Character and Community, which prominently featured psychologists' research on fostering children's ethical and moral development. Hosted by first lady Laura Bush, the meeting brought together about 200 educators, researchers, congressional and government officials, and schoolchildren to discuss research-based methods of integrating service learning and character development into education. "Some people think of education in terms of the Three R'sreading, writing and arithmeticbut another R is essential: responsibility," the first lady said in her opening remarks. The nine conference speakers, who included several psychologists, Secretary of Education Rod Paige, PhD, the first lady and President Bush, explained how educators can teach that fourth R, as well as fairness, sharing, trust, tolerance, respect and caring. "The conference was another initiative in keeping with this administration's strong commitment to a science-based approach to education reform in both academic and nonacademic arenas," says Cynthia Belar, PhD, executive director of APA's Education Directorate and one of the White House invitees. "In particular, this event clearly highlighted the potential contributions psychology can make in these endeavors."
