Sportsmanship/fair play means playing as a good sport and following the moral values of honesty and justice (Lumpkin et al., 2002). The player plays by the rules and is fair and honest to his/her opponents. "Character education refers to the deliberate and intentional activity of cultivating, modeling, and teaching moral growth and moral judgment" (Stoll, 2000, p.3). The goal of this process is for individuals to build moral habits with a disposition to act upon moral judgment (Kohlberg, 1981).

BLACKSBURG Imagine your children building stronger character just going about their daily routines. In many schools across Virginia and nationwide, the CHARACTER COUNTS! program is making this fantasy a reality. "We know it works," said Joseph Hunnings, Virginia Cooperative Extension 4-H youth development specialist at Virginia Tech.

Hunnings is referring to evaluations of the CHARACTER COUNTS! program, a research-based program that uses the concept of six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship, to teach ethical behavior. The program builds consensus that there are values that define people at their best, however diverse their views and backgrounds. Virginia Cooperative Extension's 4-H youth development program has been training volunteers and school personnel for several years to bring the program into schools and communities throughout the state. To date, many school systems nationwide have adopted the program, including more than 60 schools in Virginia.

Introduction
Increased character education is one alternative available to help what many see as the mayhem of moral decline in America . Research suggests a correlation between the teaching of character education of youth and its positive ethical results throughout the United States. While these findings demonstrate positive changes experienced by youth audiences, no research to date has been conducted on the effects that teaching Character Counts! has on those teaching the program. The research project reported here examined Character Counts! Program's impact on Cooperative Extension and on the personal and societal lives of Extension educators and assistants. In a recent survey of 20,829 high school and middle school students conducted by the Josephson Institute of Ethics (1997) found the following.

    Our Character Education Program assists and supports the ethical and social development of students, both in schools and youth programs, and includes curriculum materials teacher training and assessments. ERC staff members have extensive experience helping individuals with diverse ethical and cultural backgrounds integrate character education into their daily activities. Our partnerships with a variety of educational and youth-oriented institutions such as the National FFA (formerly the Future Farmers of America) and Junior Achievement have enabled us to understand the challenges, benefits and restrictions unique to working effectively in faculty/student environments, and to develop character education programs that are both original and effective. The ERC is currently seeking funding for the following:
    Not-for-Sale DVD Student Ethics Offices in High Schools National Character Education Survey (NCES) We strongly support the need in character education research to examine the impact of character education on test scores, and other criteria, such as suspension and dropout rates. We would like to broaden our current evaluative efforts, limited largely to qualitative measures, and conduct additional quantitative research in this area. We have already designed a study to measure the scope and effectiveness of character education in our nation's schools. We are currently seeking funding to implement this study, which once completed, can be repeated on a bi-annual basis to become an accurate and important benchmarking tool.

    Should schools be teaching values? And if they do, how can we know that they are teaching values with which parents agree? Answer: This question is answered by Katie Sutliff , Associate Consultant for Character Education First, should schools be teaching values? The fact is that, intentionally or unintentionally, all schools teach values. Whether schools take the time to nurture values or decide not to discuss them, they send a message about the significance of character. Any school that condones cheating, racism or sexism, whose teachers are unfair, or which is not a caring institution will have an adverse effect on its students that parents must struggle to overcome. On the other hand, schools can foster and encourage students to become ethical people people of good character. Schools are tasked with creating knowledgeable individuals of good character. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence, plus character, that is the goal of true education." The classroom is a professional environment for learning, and character must be explicitly taught there. Teachers can use the classroom both as a forum for direct instruction and as an opportunity to lead by example. Administrators can aid in the development of good character by creating a moral community at school.

CHARACTER EDUCATION: LESSONS FROM THE PAST, MODELS FOR THE FUTURE by James S. Leming (1993)
This short pamphlet reviews existing research on the curricular effectiveness of the morals/values education programs that developed and flourished in the 60s, 70s, and 80s along with a review of the potential of the classroom and school to develop student character. After a brief history of character education in the 20s and 30s, the work presents a conceptual and theoretical perspective for effective character education for the present.
CRITICAL REASONING by Jerry Cederblom and David W. Paulson (1991)
This book is a good introduction to logic and reasoning for people who have little or no familiarity with deductive and inductive logic, logical fallacies, truth trees, etc. Topics include evaluating inductive arguments, empirical generalizations, and empirical theories using real-life examples.

Mission Statement The NAIA "Champions of Character" initiative will create an environment in which every NAIA student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship Concepts/Principles The NAIA "Champions of Character" initiative is designed to assist those influenced by sports programs to know the right thing, do the right thing, and value the right thing inside of and outside of the sports setting. Using Stories about Heroes To Teach Values. ERIC Digest.
There has been a renewal of concern during the 1990s about teaching and learning valuesstandards that everyone should have about what is good or bad. And leading educators have recommended stories about heroes as a main means of teaching and learning values. Teaching methods that stress only cognitive skills in the analysis and clarification of choices about values have fallen from favor. The current trend is against teaching neutrally about values. Rather, the trend is for teaching values in concert with methods of analysis and judgment that yield answers about right and wrong, better and worse concerning personal behavior and the common good (Leming 1996). Prominent educators recommend that certain widely held values or virtues should be at the core of the school curriculum for the purpose of systematically developing the character of students. They stress the integration of cognitive development and character development through "perspective-taking, moral reasoning, thoughtful decision-making, and moral self-knowledge" (Lickona 1993, 9). And they also urge the use of personal modelsheroesin history, fiction, and current events to exemplify and encourage emulation of particular virtues or desirable traits of character, such as honesty, civility, courage, perseverance, loyalty, self-restraint, compassion, tolerance, fairness, respect for the worth and dignity of the individual, responsibility for the common good, and so forth (Leming 1996; Lickona 1991).
