E. References Introduction As previously stated in the section related to desired student outcomes (Huitt, 1997a), in my opinion there are three major issues in the education of young people today. The first is the development of a vision for one's life that includes the discovery and/or defining of one's life mission and desired lifestyle. The second is the development of one's character, dealing with concerns of direction and quality of life. The third deals with the development of competence that deals with concerns of how well one is able to do something. These three issues are addressed specifically in the SCANS report (Whetzel, 1992) and in my critique of that report (Huitt, 1997). Similarly, Walsh (1990) defines education as the process that prepares young people for their social inheritance and advocates three dimensions of educationdevelopment of knowledge, training of mental abilities, and development of character. The issues of vision and competence permeates other sections of these materials (e.g., information processing abstract thinking critical thinking conation/volition .) The focus of this section will be the issue of character. The following two definitions provide examples of a normative view of character:

TeachWithMovies.com shows parents and teachers how to use movies as a resource for class based or homeschool curriculum. Why use movies? A well chosen film can highlight points covered in the curriculum, engage and inspire students, and provide a change from ordinary educational activities.
Each TWM Learning Guide shows how to convert a popular film into an educational movie. Each Learning Guide permits teachers and parents to plan a lesson that fits into their curriculum (including the homeschool curriculum) with a movie that will grab kids and, for 90% of the films that we recommend, engage adults as well.

Appendix E
Character Development
E-1. Everyone who becomes part of America’s Army, soldier or DA civilian, has character. On the day a person joins the Army, leaders begin building on that character. Army values emphasize the relationship between character and competence. Although competence is a fundamental attribute of Army leaders, character is even more critical. This appendix discusses the actions Army leaders take to develop their subordinates’ character. E-2. Army leaders are responsible for refining the character of soldiers and DA civilians. How does the Army as an institution ensure proper character development? What should leaders do to inculcate Army values in their subordinates? E-3. Leaders teach Army values to every new member of the Army. Together with the leader attributes described in Chapter 2 , Army values establish the foundation of leaders of character. Once members learn these values, their leaders ensure adherence. Adhering to the principles Army values embody is essential, for the Army cannot tolerate unethical behavior. Unethical behavior destroys morale and cohesion; it undermines the trust and confidence essential to teamwork and mission accomplishment. E-4. Ethical conduct must reflect beliefs and convictions, not just fear of punishment. Over time, soldiers and DA civilians adhere to Army values because they want to live ethically and profess the values because they know it’s right to do so. Once people believe and demonstrate Army values, they are persons of character. Ultimately, Army leaders are charged with the with the essential role of developing character in others.

YMCA Character Development Our character shows in our behavior how we practice our values. The YMCA develops character by demonstrating and teaching the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. These values, derived from Christian teachings but embraced by all the worlds major religions, form a blueprint for decision making and a moral and ethical foundation for life. The Y has been concerned with character development for more than 150 years. Methods have changed from evangelical Christianity in the organizations early years to "values clarification" in the 1960s and '70s but the organizations commitment to Christian principles has not. Today the YMCA of the USA is an active member of the Character Counts! Coalition, a consortium of youth-serving organizations dedicated to finding new ways of helping young people build good values. How Not to Teach Values
A Critical Look at Character Education by Alfie Kohn "Teachers and schools tend to mistake good behavior for good character. What they prize is docility, suggestibility; the child who will do what he is told; or even better, the child who will do what is wanted without even having to be told. They value most children what children least value in themselves. Small wonder that their effort to build character is such a failure; they don't know it when they see it." John Holt
How Children Fail Were you to stand somewhere in the continental United States, and announce, "I'm going to Hawaii," it would be understood that you were heading for those islands in the Pacific that collectively constitute the 50th state. Were you to stand in Honolulu and make the same statement, however, you would probably be talking about one specific island in the chain - namely, the big one to your southeast. The word Hawaii would seem to have two meanings, a broad one and a narrow one; we depend on context to tell them apart. The phrase character education also has two meanings. In the broad sense, it refers to almost anything that schools might try to provide outside of academics, especially when the purpose is to help children grow into good people. In the narrow sense, it denotes a particular style of moral training, one that reflects particular values as well as particular assumptions about the nature of children and how they learn.

And plenty of parents have had to set an extra place at the dinner table for the “friend.” So are children’s imaginary playmates cause for concern? In most cases, the answer is No. Imaginary friends are a pretty normal part of growing up—especially during the toddler years—and they serve several important functions. Armin Brott Respect: How To Teach It And Show It One of the most important things you can teach your child is respect. Keep in mind that respect is not the same as obedience. Children might obey because they are afraid. If they respect you, they will obey because they know you want what's best for them. Steve McChesney Guilt Tripping Parents who use shame and guilt as a motivator do so because they believe that the technique is needed to encourage children to change. The idea is that if children can be shamed into feeling guilty, they will change their behavior and do what their parents desire.

As the Vilna Gaon writes, “For it is your life: For a person is alive only in order to break a [negative] character trait that he has not broken until now. Therefore one should always strengthen one’s self; for if he does not strengthen himself, why is he alive?” And as the Baal Shem Tov also said, quoting Rav Saadia Gaon, “For the main purpose of man’s creation in this world is to break his bad character traits." Improving our character means making ourselves more G-dlike – closer to G-d – while at the same time enriching our relationships. Thank you for your hospitality. I want to thank the directors of the Y for welcoming me to this little slice of heaven. I'm traveling with some folks that you might want to at least say "hello" to. I picked somebody from to head the Department of the Interior who would understand the thinking of the West, who would understand that we can have good, sound environmental policy; that conservation is important.

Pursuing Victory With Honor
Throughout its history, the Arizona Interscholastic Association and its member schools have used educational athletics as a vehicle to teach life lessons related to the promotion of healthy lifestyles and character development. Recognizing the many challenges facing modern day interscholastic athletics, the AIA introduced its signature Pursuing Victory With Honor program in 1999 to assist all invested parties in maintaining and promoting the integrity and educational value of athletics. Through the framework of the Arizona Sports Summit Accord, the AIA promotes a healthy sport experience through a comprehensive educational program targeting its member schools and their stakeholders.

    To Teach Values
    ERIC Identifier:

There has been a renewal of concern during the 1990s about teaching and learning valuesstandards that everyone should have about what is good or bad. And leading educators have recommended stories about heroes as a main means of teaching and learning values.
Teaching methods that stress only cognitive skills in the analysis and clarification of choices about values have fallen from favor. The current trend is against teaching neutrally about values. Rather, the trend is for teaching values in concert with methods of analysis and judgment that yield answers about right and wrong, better and worse concerning personal behavior and the common good (Leming 1996).
Prominent educators recommend that certain widely held values or virtues should be at the core of the school curriculum for the purpose of systematically developing the character of students. They stress the integration of cognitive development and character development through "perspective-taking, moral reasoning, thoughtful decision-making, and moral self-knowledge" (Lickona 1993, 9). And they also urge the use of personal modelsheroesin history, fiction, and current events to exemplify and encourage emulation of particular virtues or desirable traits of character, such as honesty, civility, courage, perseverance, loyalty, self-restraint, compassion, tolerance, fairness, respect for the worth and dignity of the individual, responsibility for the common good, and so forth (Leming 1996; Lickona 1991).
