41. BBC News | Sci/Tech | Close Shave With Asteroid
A large asteroid could miss the Earth by only 38,000 kilometres (very close in cosmic terms) in 2027, according to new astronomical observations. What's more it will remain dangerously close for about 600 years, and chaos theory means that it is impossible to predict its trajectory with enough accuracy for more than a few decades in advance.

Close shave with asteroid

The suspect asteroid is one kilometre wide
By BBC News Online Science Editor Dr David Whitehouse A large asteroid could miss the Earth by only 38,000 kilometres in 2027, according to new astronomical observations. This is an extremely close shave - the Moon orbits 10 times further from Earth. The calculations suggest that an impact is not possible that year but, in theory, the Earth's gravity could perturb the asteroid's path, possibly leading to an impact in 2039. The near-miss trajectory of a newly-discovered asteroid, called 1999 AN10, was announced in April. Now, the observational data of Australian astronomer F. Zoltowski allows calculations of just how close the asteroid may come to Earth. Closer and closer Astronomers at the Minor Planet Center at the US Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory used Zoltowski's work to work out an estimated approach distance for AN10 of 56,500 kilometres from Earth. The fly-by will occur on August 7, 2027. But the closest possible distance that AN10 could come to the Earth on that day is only 38,000km.

One down
I got my grades this week and I was very pleased. I worked very hard to get the grades I got. It feels good to have it pay off. I may even get the chance to work as a math tutor in the fall. I will have to wait and see if they will have the funds to hire more personnel. This is my off week. I begin spring classes on Monday. I have calculus at 8 a.m. Monday thru Thursday and psychology on the internet. I also took an animal behavior course that meets for one 4 hour session and then a weekend at Wolf Park, IN . It looks very interesting. I took my kids to our local zoo yesterday. I have always loved going to the zoo. This time of year is great. It is not too hot and the animals are very active. The otters were very playful and the wolves were running around and howling. It is great to see the zoo growing. It had been such a disappointment for so many years. I purchased a family pass for the season. I’m sure we will get our monies worth. Permalink Comments (0) TrackBack (0)

45. Technotheology - Introduction
Bill Laudeman's attempt to relate physics, cosmology, and chaos theory with orthodox Roman Catholic theology.
http://technotheology.org/
The Technotheology Project
By W. J. Laudeman The Technotheology Project (TTP) is an open study which I began in 1994 to examine the relationship between our latest knowledge of the basis of physical existence (quantum physics), the creation and the development of the universe (cosmology), and certain advances in mathematics (the theory of Chaos), all in light of present orthodox Roman Catholic theology ; thus Technotheology . The study takes the form of a working document which is amended and expanded from time to time. It is intended to continue into the foreseeable future as a continuing Project
The basis of this study . . . . .
(A) The universe is a creation.
(B) The Creator, God, exists.

Chaos Theory
A tough and mind-boggling field of science, Hypography Sci-Tech locates some sites which bring order to the chaos. Created by Tormod Guldvog
Last updated September 14 2001 You have probably heard about fractals, which basically are graphic illustrations of mathematical formulas. But they show us an important thing - that there is somehow order and beauty in the chaos of random numbers.
Chaos theory is becoming an increasingly important science. By harnessing the power of chaos we may find new ways to propel our space craft, as well as better understanding of how networks function. We may also learn how the brain functions, and perhaps find clues to one our deepest issues: how does life arise from the chaotic days of the early Earth?

In a scientific context, the word chaos has a slightly different meaning than it does in its general usage as a state of confusion, lacking any order . Chaos, with reference to chaos theory , refers to an apparent lack of order in a system that nevertheless obeys particular laws or rules; this understanding of chaos is synonymous with dynamical instability , a condition discovered by the physicist Henri Poincare in the early 20th century that refers to an inherent lack of predictability in some physical systems. The two main components of chaos theory are the ideas that systems - no matter how complex they may be - rely upon an underlying order, and that very simple or small systems and events can cause very complex behaviors or events. This latter idea is known as sensitive dependence on initial conditions , a circumstance discovered by Edward Lorenz (who is generally credited as the first experimenter in the area of chaos) in the early 1960s.

Chaos Introduction
Chaos theory is among the youngest of the sciences, and has rocketed from its obscure roots in the seventies to become one of the most fascinating fields in existence. At the forefront of much research on physical systems, and already being implemented in fields covering as diverse matter as arrhythmic pacemakers, image compression, and fluid dynamics, chaos science promises to continue to yield absorbing scientific information which may shape the face of science in the future.
This is an introduction to chaos theory designed for those who have an interest in chaos theory but are, very much like myself, confined by an as yet underdeveloped mathematical background to theory over mathematics. Seperate archives of seven varied topics in the area of chaos theory are included, with graphics where necessary; a bibliography is also included for independent research. The rest of this homepage is a quasi-FAQ which covers much of the basic rationale and theory behind chaos theory.

Inspiring and educating people about Fractals, chaos theory and the interconnectedness of complex systems. Our Fractal Balloons are a highly visible fusion of art and technology.

...is to educate and inspire people about mathematics, art, science, chaos theory and nature. We focus particularly on efforts to reach young people with our educational programs , and we also connect with adults through our scholarship and art sponsorship programs.
We believe that understanding the Principles of Chaos Theory - which are so beautifully illustrated by fractals - is essential to harmonious and sustainable living. No longer is it safe to assume that the cultural, economic and ecological systems in which we live are discrete, linear, disconnected. Rather, we must begin teaching ourselves and our children that the World is a non-linear, unpredictable, interconnected complex system. This radical new paradigm, only recently realized in the new science of Chaos Theory, is still virtually absent from conventional education. The Fractal Foundation seeks to bring these new ways of thinking into the mainstream.
The Fractal Foundation educates people about Chaos Theory and Fractals and encourages participation in art, mathematics, and computer technology by:
  • Providing educational materials, presentations and software to school children (K-12), teaching them to explore fractals themselves.
