Undergraduate Program
The program is designed to give each student both a broad background in physics and a high degree of expertise in a chosen field of research. The department is small, and to provide a breadth of coverage in physics, the faculty members have different specialties covering a variety of topics and research interests. Students and faculty members work closely together. The formal graduate course work is handled in small courses or tutorials which can be tailored to the needs of the students. Students may also take introductory or advanced graduate courses at the University of Pennsylvania or at Drexel University in nearby Philadelphia (about thirty minutes by car or train). Some research projects are of an interdisciplinary nature, involving two or more groups in the Physics, Biology Mathematics , and Chemistry Departments.

  • Fall term is a good time to engage in these projects. We highly recommend that you do one. If you do, you will learn something about actually doing Physics and Astronomy research, which will help guide you in decisions about "life after Carleton." Please note that special projects are offered only on a S/Cr/NC basis, since it is very difficult to assign grades to independent and cooperative projects. They are for 2 or 3 credits and, starting this academic year, you will need to complete a special project form that will get deposited with the registrar. The form is available on the department web site or you can pickup a copy from Ann Passe, Olin 331.     Research Fields: Tailoring wavelets for chaos control Controlling chaos is of great interest and importance from both fundamental point of view and application point of view. Recently, we have introduced wavelet controlled dynamics as a new paradigm of dynamical control. Mathematically, wavelets are sets of L 2 functions generated from a single function by translation and dilation. Some of the most important features of wavelets include time-frequency localization and multiresolution analysis. Physically, wavelet transform can split a function into different frequency bands or components so that each component can be studied with a resolution matched to its scale, thus providing excellent frequency and spatial resolution, and achieving high efficiency. Moreover, we can devise a wavelet system for representing physical information at various levels of details, leading to the so-called mathematical microscopy. We considered the wavelet decompositon on the coupling matrix of several chaotic dynamical systems. We found that by modifying a tiny fraction of the wavelet subspaces of the coupling matrix, we could dramatically enhance the transverse stability of the synchronous manifold of a chaotic system. Wavelet controlled Hopf bifurcation from chaos is observed. The impact of modifying a wavelet subspace to the coupling matrix A of chaotic oscillators.

    Overview
    The Chaos Research Group studies deterministic chaos and nonlinear dynamics in engineering systems and is located within the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee . This group closely collaborates with the Chaos Applications Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory The Chaos Research Group is an interdisciplinary team of faculty, students and engineering staff which studies the nature of complex, nonlinear engineering systems to achieve a better understanding of the underlying physical processes, to develop better diagnostics, or to control these systems in situations in which conventional control might be infeasible or too costly. Many of the group members work with CANDIES , a special team which collaborates with industrial partners to understand engineering systems from the perspective of nonlinear dynamics and chaos.

    An increasing number of scientists are discovering that order has always been embedded within chaotic systems. We just haven't been able to uncover the underlying patternsuntil now. Chaos Rules C haos again took centre stage at ICTP this summer. But in typical ICTP fashion the event was meticulously organised.
    The occasion for chaos's arrival was the Symposium on Synchronization of Chaotic Systems, which was held between 3-5 July 2000.
    Hirokazu Fujisaka, Tomoji Yamada and Valentin Afraimovich launched the topic of synchronization of chaotic oscillators in the 1980s, but it only gained worldwide attention after Louis Pecora and Tom Carroll's hypothesis of its use for secure communications.
    Later Kevin Cuomo and Alan Oppenheim showed that it was possible to encode messages within a noise-like chaotic signal. While this work raised hopes for a new system of secure communications, Gabriel A. Perez and Hilda Cerdeira at ICTP showed that the underlying structure of low-dimensional chaotic systems could be used by an eavesdropper to decode an encrypted message.
    At the conference, more than 80 scientists from 27 countries listened to a broad range of presentations25 in allexploring the importance that the dimensionality of chaotic systems has in encrypting messages successfully.

    C haos is a science of the real world. It is concerned with the big picture all around us things as diverse as the weather, the beating of the human heart, the stock market, population fluctuations, brain waves. Instead of particle physics, which explores the infinitesimally small building blocks of matter, chaos applies mainly to the universe we see and touch, to objects and events at a human scale. Much of the work of chaos involves finding hidden patterns, or predictability, in what people usually think of as random or "chaotic" processes things like the weather, or the rise and fall of the stock market. Chaos research has many ramifications. One of the most significant: understanding "chaotic" events can lead to predicting the future. Think of the possibilities in disease management, stock market analysis, weather forecasting...the list is endless. Much of the plot of the movie Drawing Down the Moon stems from the imaginative interweaving of witchcraft "magic" with chaos theory research. There are many similarities between the "disciplines" of magic and chaos. Both seek to make the impossible possible. Both attempt to make predictions about future events. In the movie, Gwynyth compares Joe Merchant's chaos research to "magic, scrying, divination." For fascinating information on the development of the science of chaos, we highly recommend the book "Chaos: Making a New Science" by James Gleick. This book actually inspired Steven Patterson, DDTM's writer/director, to some principals of chaos theory in the storyline of the film. Mr. Gleick's book is a revelation. It's a great read, it's accessible to non-math and non-science people, and every page of it sizzles with the excitement of this revolutionary scientific field. Steve also sent a copy of the book to Walter Koenig to help Mr. Koenig's preparation for his role as the eccentric, brilliant chaos mathematician "Joe Merchant."
